I just watched some trailers on Netflix for movies to order, and the European ones featured actresses that were actually what you might call homely. Until they started acting. Then they were compelling and fabulous.
In the very funny book, Bossypants, by Tina Fey, she says this: “Even if you would never sleep with or even flirt with anyone to get ahead, you are being sexually adjudicated by these LA creeps. Network executives really do say things like, ‘I don’t know. I don’t want to f – anybody on this show.’ They really do say that stuff…It seems to me that the fastest remedy for (this situation) is for more women to become producers and hire diverse women of various ages. That’s why I feel obligated to stay in the business and try hard to get to a place where I can create opportunities for others…”
So everybody go out and buy Bossypants and make Tina Fey really BIG so she can help the rest of women get a leg up!

I only have to wonder if there aren’t women producers who look at their cast and think the same things? ♥
I like Tina Fey very much. I have this really weird thing, however, which prevents me from reading her book. I can’t stand the cover. The picture of her man-hands freaks me out so much I avert my eyes if her book cover is visible. Weird, isn’t it? That’s me.
That’s funny, Lisa! She said she got this photographer to come around behind her and position his arms as if they were hers. Don’t see the point except just the fact that she’s a comic and was looking for a laugh. I did enjoy the book. It was funny and she’s a hard-working, regular gal. Maybe a paper-bag cover like we used to make in Catholic elementary school?
That would work!
Tina Fey is seriously twisted. That’s why the man-hands make such perfect sense. And that’s why she’s so funny, and so incredibly successful. She’s a risk taker.
Network Execs sound just like any other bag of wind who’s so full of him (or her) self that they can’t stop listening to themselves talk. Luckily they’re either on the decline, or their non pc bullshit has forced their mouths shut to some extent.
I think Tina should stay off the soapbox and just keep being a very funny and very successful woman. The happier and more fulfilled she and others like her are – the less wind in the bag!
Robin and Haralee, I am relieved to hear that maybe the “net exec” issue isn’t as bad as TF portrays it. I worry that as I get older the only movies available will still be aimed at the typical target audience of 18-35 yr. old men. Many actresses aim to produce their own films, starring strong women. I am excited to think we may have more of them. For example, I think Ann Patchett’s recent book, State of Wonder, should star Helen Mirren and Salma Hayek. Thanks for weighing in.
I listened to her book and she read it. It was great! That would help Lisa get over the cover.
Show biz execuatives and I have only met a couple are an interesting group. In another business setting they could never behave like they do.
