Reinventing myself at 55 Hot Conversation

The kids (3) all basically have one foot out the door to independence and I can’t imagine sitting around for the next 10,20,30 years with nothing to do after staying home for 20 years raising 3 beautiful, successful children.

With a background in Interior Design, would anyone be interested in a new service I’m considering of affordable, ALL on the internet, professional interior design consultation?

Love to know what you think.

I am not considering this now, but i think it is a great idea.  My house needs a change, but i hate curtains, i only use valances.  Fabric is not my thing because they are expensive and have to change them often, dusty too and i am asthmatic.  I used to do a lot to my house, all of the sudden in the last 3-4 years i stopped completely.  I just did my kitchen.  It was a project that i was so looking forward to and hired a guy from Russia who left 30% of the work undone and took all the money, so it was bittersweet.  I finally had it finished with someone else.  I think after that experience i basically gave up.  I only need cosmetic changes now.  But i am so very tired.  Do not have the energy at all!  However your idea is great!

Thanks for your support from everyone.  I’m really excited about this.

I have another question, what do you think a good business name would be?

I think this is a great idea. The web is the way to go.  Why not start with a blog and see how much response you get? you could walk potential customers through your process with clients much like in Julia and Julia.  Or start with ideas under $100 etc.  Why not start a blog on downsizing and simplifying life. I’ll bet after following you for a while you could build up a good clientele who would then contact you.

Wow, this is really great.  Now I’m going to have to rent Julia and Julia since I didn’t see it.

I’m starting to formulate a business name and have started thinking about “DecorateYourRoom”  Any thoughts?

dsikora07. . . I too started over at age 55. . . I developed a privacy screen for my college age daughter . . . PrivateSpacers.com.  I was let go from my job and had to do something. Daughter called and said she had no privacy in dorm room, so I came up with this idea. . . and it has been doing pretty good.  I spend my time packing very large boxes. It is hard work. But no one tells me what to do! And that’s the wonderful reward of doing something for yourself.

Wow, what a cool idea.  You should expand to boarding schools.  Both of my youngest went to boarding school and that’s even more of a challenge in the dorm because of the lack of maturity.

I love the name of your company.  Any thoughts on a name for my business?

Thank you for the compliment. . . the boarding school idea is great. . .I also like the concept for your business. Just like Lynette, I’ve stopped doing anything to my house. All I do now is try to keep it relatively clean and neat.  I want to do things like paint and buy new furniture, but don’t get much help from my husband, who is just satisfied with ‘same old, same old’

I’ve often thought about taking pictures and sending them to students in interior design school for ideas.  So that would be something for you to think about.  .  . having people take pictures of their ‘hard-to-decorate” rooms and then you can kind of give them ideas. .  .  I’m still thinking of a name for your new biz.

Wow, this is exactly my plan with the decorating on-line.  People would virtually send me their pictures, measurements (if needed) and fill out a questionnaire to help me determine their style, etc.  In return, I would send a floor plan (if needed) and a full plan of suggestions, including furntiure, where to buy, etc.  Actually, there is software now available, that I could complete a full 3-D COLOR rendering of how the room would look upon completion.  (Very cool software, how far we’ve come in the computer world!!)

That’s interesting your husband’s perspective, which is probably fairly common.  Do you think if someone had a completed 3-D color rendering and plan and showed it to their spouse, it would help move them to action?

I think you might be onto something, girlfriend. . . yes, if my husband could actually ‘see’ something, he might go for it.  And he is not the type to go to furniture stores to ‘browse’ . . .I want a pretty house. . . it is a nice house now, but it really needs some ‘Rejuvenation’. . .Still working on a name for you; I was once an advertising copywriter, so I LOVE coming up with catcy phrases and names. . . that is how I came up with PrivateSpacers.com.

Can’t wait to hear your business name ideas.  It’s clear from your company name that you have a huge talent!  The one name I’ve been toying with is “Decorate Your Room”

Yes, more and more people I talk to (especially the over 50 crowd) are looking for comfy, nice looking homes realizing how important it is and how good it makes them feel.

I’m asking everyone if they have thoughts on a business name.  Any ideas?

Congrats on your new venture!  I had the same kind of idea many, many years ago.  But, computers were not the norm. and I had to do it all by word of mouth!  I also did a number of speaking engagements and classes on the decorating process.  I think there may be many people out there that would love consulting  services.  I have often thought about about going back into business , but I don’t think I have the same drive anymore to give it my all.  Anyway, I know your business will be a great success!  And the name suggestions given here are fabulous!  Best wishes to you!  =]
