Yet another reason for term limits!
I think today the most dangerous job in DC is a congressional staff member. Rangel just threw his under the bus. The man actually said:
“I don’t want to be critical of the committee. But common sense dictates that members of Congress shouldn’t be held responsible for what could be mistakes by staff unless there’s reason to believe the member knew or should have known,” Rangel said.
I don’t know about the rest of you ladies, but I’ve never worked for an organization where the boss wasn’t considered the person ultimately responsible for their staff.
I you want to watch the whole video:

I used to be a congressional staffer. Luckily, I worked for a good man who had a clear sense of values. He was always on top of it. No matter if he was entitled for free upgrades because of traveling home so often, he always demanded coach seating because he said that he knew it was free, but his constituents wouldn’t know. I have tons of stories like this.
I still work in the government and follow his guidance. Just this week, I had lunch with a friend who is a contractor. When the check came, he said, now remember, this is a friend’s lunch. I said yep, but I’m still paying my half. That way, no matter who is looking, I don’t have to explain a thing. I miss out on a lot of the ‘freebies”, but I never have to explain my actions to anyone either. And when tough decisions have to be made, I can make them clearly.
It’s very, very sad when those we were raised to admire give us so many reasons to be disappointed in them. In fact, I just wrote a chapter about this for a book on leadership ethics. When it is published, I’ll post the link here to give my VN friends a free sneak peek.
You’re right. In today’s media frenzy market, all anyone has to do is state it in the wrong way, and away goes the mudslinging. It’s best to not give even the ‘appearance’ of impropriety.
I would love to read that chapter. Before I retired, OD and leadership was a big interest of mine, and I still enjoy reading about it.
Oh geez. I’m a boss. I have about 200 people under me through a couple of layers. The buck does stop on my desk. Oh don’t get me wrong–I hold them all accountable when they screw up. And everyone above them is equally accountable. Including me. The buck DOES stop on my desk.I take it all personally.
And when they succeed–I give them 100% credit. And brag like the dickens.
You’re a good leader.
What’s sad is that Rangle doesn’t realize he’s saying he’s not able to handle his job. Even Dems are calling for him to step down.
Looks like built in term limit’s at work. Others will learn from his mistake. Hopefully.
RANGEL is a disgrace, plain and simple. And I like the word “HUBRIS”, leaders like him believe they are a lengend, only in their own minds! One reason I give extra credit when anyone fusses up to their responsiblilty and error. Check and see all the dirty little tricks he’s involved in, needs to step down!
