What are your thoughts regarding keeping a cash savings at home instead of a bank?
I worry that if something was to happen to me the money would be hidden and no one would know it was there. I have heard that people do keep what is called mattress money. Hmmm, would a safe deposit box be a better choice?
Your thoughts please.

How about a CD where at least you’d make some interest on it?
Afternoon, Good question! If in the house you could get at it anytime, however, if fire broke out what then? If in the local banking system ( we are not getting more than 2-3% on savings and the power that be taxes that), but supposilty covered by THE FEDS the same that tax us to death, maybe a little of both. Leaving a letter where they may get to it if something happens to you. Good question, hmmmm….TRACK
P.S. Short cds 3-6 months
P.S.S.someone you trust much, so your wishes (after death)are followed to the letter…money, death can bring out the worst in family! and I believe it is illegal to put cash money in safe deposit boxes.
Depends how much you are talking about I think. I keep a few hundred dollars in cash around just because. Sometimes up to a grand but I live in about the lowest crime district in the world. I probably would keep much over that. Check with your insurance agent and see how cash is covered by your policy. There usually is a certain amount covered.
Another question would be why are you asking? I did this when I was thinking about leaving my ex. You need to able to access some cash in the event you need to leave ASAP. I guess it’s kind of like investing. Only risk what you can afford to lose or what your nervous system can handle.
I prefer to take $1000 out of my bank account and keep it in a drawer at home. My motivation was I was so sick and tired of going to bank machines all the time. Or swiping my card every 10 minutes.
I don’t use that money for paying bills or groceries or anything. It just seems to be I always need $$ for parking, eaitng out, picking the dry cleaning, etc etc. I truly just got tired of running to the ATM.
I seldom have more than $40 to $60 in my wallet. but it’s at home when I need it.
I would put it in a safe deposit box. I don’t usually keep any money at home or in my purse for that matter. I really like using my debit card for purchases.
I had to make a decision about some cash. Fortunately a very trusted friend helped me but you have to really trust the person. I think like Old tom boy said – depends on the reason. If you don’t want someone else in the house to know – the bank will generate a tax form at the end of the year so you have to think about that. What about a small fire safe container at the house? But be sure to let someone you trust know. I didn’t realize a safe deposit box wasn’t supposed to have cash. If it was a significant amt I guess it could get tied up unless you trust having someone else signed on for a key who can take it out right away if something happens to you and get it to the person you want to have it. Guess I wouldn’t have more then a small amt of “mattress money” (the suggested $1,000 by NanaCatharine) unless I knew it was very safe. It is a pain to have to run to the bank or atm but with my luck I would hide money at home and have a senior moment and not remember where I put it! Actually I found $100 one day cleaning and realized – oh yeah, that’s where I put it!
I’d get a fireproof small safe — I have one that will withstand fire temperatures for at least 4 hours — enough time for the Fire Dept to put it out?? And — let one other person that you truly trust know where it is!! Safe deposit boxes are a really good alternative!
