For as long as I can remember, I avoided social media like the plague. But something happened in March that changed all of that. I was laid off from my job of seven years. OUCH! After about 48 hours of shock, I decided I could not afford any more. I went to work. I joined Facebook, and later Twitter. I had already been dabbling at being an entrepreneur, with a self-published cookbook and a course I had created to help others do the same. I decided that being laid off was a blessing. Now I could truly go to work to fulfill my desires. So here’s what I did: I embraced Facebook and decided to use it as the powerful tool it is. A tool so powerful, it would eventually connect me with all the talented individuals I would need to launch my new project. What did I do? I targeted groups that would be interested in my book and began “friending” those people. I targeted chefs, foodies, writers and anyone else who seemed interesting or interested in what I might be doing. And guess what? It worked! No mafia wars or farmville for me. I said to myself, “I’m going for what Facebook can do for me.” With this as my mantra and a targeted selection technique, I am now happy to report that I have “met” and retained the enthusiastic cooperation of 5 “industry experts” who will be speaking with me on my teleseminar series starting at the end of this month. Remember, I did not know any of these wonderful individuals in March. Seven months and nearly 2300 friends later, I now have a whole crew, eager to support me. Of course, they’ll be receiving exposure in return. For me this is a true “win/win.” In addition, I have been asked to speak on a couple of radio shows, have participated on another woman’s teleseminar, and I’m now editing the new cookbook of a man in Nepal, who is a great cook and has always dreamed of being a writer. I can’t speak enough about the connections I have made. Sure, there are the occasional “weirdos”, but they are easy to delete! The benefits truly outweigh the little discomforts. I would not trade anything for the connections I have made. In my opinion, Facebook ROCKS! My only regret? Not joining sooner!!

Laura your story is so inspiring. I’ll try to find you on Facebook.
Hi Laura, I love Facebook too! I’m am getting together a 35 year class reunion for next year. Found that many of my old classmates are on Facebook and I’ve gotten some to join. Great way to “see” them before we actually see eachother in the flesh next year. Kind of a little reunion before the reunion. I’m happy for you that you found a way out of the finality of losing your job. You are an inspiration!
Wonderful story! I find this foodie blog interesting http://nenacooks.blogspot.com/
Her English is not perfect, but I think it adds to her charm. Not all her food appeals to me, but I find it interesting and charming reading. Thought I would share! Best of luck to you!
