I’m shopping for a good divorce lawyer and discovering conflicting advice and prices…need to know if other readers can offer advice on health care, money up front and spousal support after 22 years of marriage.

I would contact your local County Bar Association….they can give you a list of divorce attorneys in your area, then I would have an initial meeting (they usually don’t charge for this initial consult, or a minimal charge at least)….I would interview a couple to see if you are a “fit”…..then most of them will be able to guide you in all your quesitons on health care, spousal support etc. They usually require a “retainer” once you hire them, usually a couple thousand dollars….good luck….the best thing I can suggest is for your and your soon to be ex to work out as much as you can over the kitchen table… no sense padding the attorney pockets…..even if it is uncomfortable and painful, it is definitely cheaper.
I highly recommend mediation. If your husband will agree to it, it is one lawyer for the two of you. he or she is on neither one’s side, and you negotiate the best settlement for both, as reasonable adults, no punishment, no acrimony. Very civilized, and MUCH cheaper. There are divorce mediators in every city. They also know how to do all the paperwork.
