Do I attempt this job Hot Conversation

HI,

I am a RN who has not worked as an RN for 12 + years.  I just applied for a job in  an MDs office.  Here is the dilemma.  I applied for this job last year thinking it would be perfect for me.  As is my pattern I end up as one of 2 finalist and don’t get the job due to no recent experience.  Since then I have been hearing bad things about this doc.  Nothing about her skills just that she is a tyrant to work for.  ( It is a small town you hear this stuff)  So now the job is available again, meaning the other nurse finally had enough,  and i just tossed my hat in the ring again.  I need to work, my husband is unemployed since the recession and we no longer have insurance or any money and maybe soon no house.  The problem is I am afraid I am setting myself up for a nightmare.  I know I am rusty and if this doc is  a tyrant will I sabotage myself attempting to work for her?  Sigh I don’t know what to do, I have applied for 25+ jobs since last summer and a I need a real job.  Any support/ help is appreciated.  I guess I am posting here because I need to vent and figure out what to do.

    Hi Kats

Necessity often takes us in a direction we wouldn’t otherwise take.  I think you should still apply for the job.  Make it clear from the onset that you won’t put up with her crap.  Respect isn’t a one way street, to get it you gotta give it, maybe it’s time this doctor learns that.

You can rise above working for a tyrant.  You need a job, this is the one that came along.  Take it!  And everyday remind yourself that DR. TYRANT is that way because of her not because of you.  And you don’t need to make excuses for no recent experience.  They know your qualifications and they hired you, end of story.  Now, get out there and be confident that you are you.

I think if the issue about no recent experience comes up again, it’s an opportunity to let this MD know that you’d want to learn how she likes RNs to function in her office. It sounds like a chance to get some recent experience.

One good thing is since this is a small town then people do talk so everyone knows about this doctor in the first place…so you are not alone in the things you have heard. This job could lead to something a lot better, and you will get the up to date experience you need to say you are back in the groove!!!!Hey it will work out don’t stress yourself out plan ahead for your future, maybe you won’t be there that long just long enough to get back in the workforce, contacts can be made while you are there working. That would be my plan……

Well I applied, now I juat have to see what happens.  The last nurse only lasted 5 months and I am making some calls to get more details as to why she is leaving.  I am hoping the small town grapevine helps me out.

There is another job available at a garden center.  I wonder if I would be happier there?  No stress, easy going, nice place vs stress, benifits, real job, good experience did I say stress?  Can you tell I don’t really want to get back ionto the real world? sigh this is hard

    Hi Kats,

Go for it!  Take the plunge!  You are not this other person and don’t know why she left.  As was mentioned before, she knows your credentials.  You will find out soon enough if this job is for you or not.  I work in a hospital as an LPN and have worked with all kinds of people.  Some co-workers don’t like working certain places because they find the RNs bossy (sigh!) or for other reasons.  I also have units I prefer to work on, which are not necessarily where soemone else likes to work.  For example, I love working in the ICU unit but was told when I started my orientation there that I would hate it.  This unit is comprised of some of the best and they know it.  So what seems bossy to some is just plain being very conscientient of their patients needs to me.  And they need a lot!  And they get it!

If you don’t try, you will never know.  Right?

Editing…O.K.  I had already written this before you wrote your last response.  The first part applies if you really want to return to nursing.  Yes, you are right to remember stress.  Finished last night’s shift this morning at 730 am and it was only 130 pm when I woke up.  I usually sleep until at least 300 pm.  Stress from that shift.  Not good going into this line of work if you don’t want stress.  But this is a doctors’ office.  Not the same as working on a unit…  What are the fringe benefits to working for this doctor.  Insurance, number of  guaranteed hours of work, unemeployment, retirement fund, salary, etc.  Pros and cons.  Maybe you should make a list before refusing one or the other.

Go for it, watever you decide to do, and good luck.

My first instinct was to say not to take the job (I used to be married to a “tyrant” doctor) but then after I read the other posts I thought, well, you can get some experience on your resume, and no reason why you can’t keep looking while you are working…perhaps not go in with any pre-conceived notions, you may become her best friend…..there is usually an underlying reason for people being a tyrant….if you can peel back that layer (or two or three), you may have a job for life!! And a regular paycheck is a blessing these days…

I agree with the earlier posters about taking the chance on this job.

However, remember how gossip snowballed when we were in school? Stories about people became cast in stone, regardless of what the individual tried to do to change or to counter misinformation. I say give the doctor the benefit of the doubt and form your own opinion. You may find that being older and wiser makes you the perfect candidate for the job. The doctor’s curmudgeonly reputation may crack open in your presence to reveal a perfectly wonderful individual.

I agree with going into it with an open mind – personalities do clash and if you start with a firm commitment to stand up for yourself and not be brow beaten, I’m sure things will be good. One of my bosses was very full of himself then he slipped up with a task and had to ask me to sort it out, from that day on he was very nice to me. I got him out of the s**t and everyone knew it.

Be confident – you are a wonderfully experienced person – you do anything you put your mind to.

    Hi kats,

Go for it and keep looking.  You have nothing to lose, yet.  And maybe everything to gain.  Good luck, things fall into place eventually, we just have to be listening.

I would negotiate the highest salary package the doctor can bear; she wants stability in her practice and, with her reputation, it’s the applicant nurse’s market. Had she been more prudent in her hiring, you would have been her nurse for the past year. Sic it to her.

    Happy [return to] nursing.

P.S. Please banish the negative “as is my pattern” lie and replace it with optimistic confidence.

LOL thanks.  I don’t like the pattern, but 6 times now I have been one of the final 2 for a job.  That is what happened last time I applied for this one.  I was told tonight no one in the hospital will work in the office and that even the other docs can’t stand her.  She acts entitled and has her office nurse doing private errands and toting her young kids to appointments.  Luckily I am still friendly with the staff here and folks are happy to fill me in.

Luckily also I know my strengths and weaknesses and I hope this works out and I am able to work with this women.

I am so glad i posted, i REALLY needed to hear the feedback.  I Thank all of you for responding, it is great to have so many people rooting for me.

I did apply so now it is a waiting game.  I am hoping it works out, if nothing more than something to put on my resume.

Expect a miracle. Dr. Bitch Doctor is on the ropes now and will probably treat you with kid gloves if she knows what’s good for her.

Regardless, keep your guard up and do not take on the role of her assistant.

If she asks you to run an errand or to chauffeur her children (the nerve!), stop her dead in her tracks. Remind her that you, too, are a professional and you did not spend years in nursing school and then working with the best medicine has to offer to be her nanny at this stage of life. Then offer to solicit and screen candidates for the assistant position.

I know you can, I know you can… I know you did!!!!
