Divorce

I am going through a divorce. I was a stay at home wife and mom for 25 years. Any advice would be helpful, especially when dealing with lawyers. Any do’s and don’ts.

Thank You

I’ve never been a stay at home mom, but I have been divorced twice.  Are you feeling financially insecure?  Do you have a job?  Do you know how to proceed from here on a financial level?  Do you like yourself?  Are you feeling unattractive and worthless?  Did you initiate the divorce or did he?  Are you emotionally devastated? What would you like the rest of your life to be like?  Not sure how to advise you without more information.  Most of all you need to love yourself.

You are the decision maker, don’t abdicate to your lawyer or to the judge. Don’t throw in the towel.  Know what is best for you and your future. Get input from other professionals like a fee-only financial planner or a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst; get a divorce coach as a sounding board and thinking partner.

Sorry to hear about the divorce. I have been in your position, and was a stay-at-home mom for 15 years because one of my children was born with an assortment of life-threatening illnesses that required me to give up my career and provide round-the-clock nursing care.

The best advice I ever got was from a friend whose life was all but ruined after a nasty divorce. She told me to toughen up, postpone my tears and concentrate on getting financially stable. There will be plenty of time to grieve after you figure out how to put food on the table for yourself and your children. She was absolutely right.
