I just found out this past week that where I work is located in close proxmity to a petroleum plant. And that in Feb they were fined by the EPA and are being investigated by them. I had been suffering more headaches than usual this past week and kept getting a strange sensation in my nostrils. Well, I was breathing in the toxin fumes that the plant is giving off! What tipped us off is that someone noticed the strange odor and called our Fire Department and they told us the facts about this plant. Apparently the cold front was not allowing the fumes to dissipate and were drifting to our location more so. This on top of the fact that toxic waste has been stored here for years. I have been working here for over 31 years and it’s no wonder I have been sick with fatigue, headaches, etc for most my life!!! If I can’t find another job off of this center with the Federal Government, then I am going to be forced into an early retirement. Yes, again it’s the government AGAIN. I’m just wondering, does anyone else work in a toxic environment? I do know that the air inside bldgs can become toxic as well, which is also known as Sick Bldg Syndrome. At least I now know why I’ve been not 100% most of my adult life. Thank you all for listening and I would sure like to hear from others regarding this.

are others feeling the same way? Have yourself checked with an annual exam from top to bottom. If something developes about your health you want to be ready. This is insane!
Has your organization asked the local health dept or the EPA to come in and do an air quality study in your buildings?
You should get yourself checked out regardless, because you don’t want to miss something that may not be related to the toxins.
Thank you for responding; I mentioned the issue to 2 of our management people and they just blew it off. The EPA is investigating them and has already fined the company. But apparently this isn’t enough to shut them down.
I have was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue in the late 90s; the doctors give you this label when they don’t what else to tell you. I got rid of the diet “poison” pop I was drinking, got rid of the mercury in my mouth, cleaned up my diet, do not use toxic cosmetics and I’m still not 100%! My intuition tells me that the pollution is not helping my health.
One of my good friends that works there told me that her health has gone down-hill since she’s come to work there in the mid 90s. Another friend told me that her eyes bother her every time she comes to work. In my thinking the pollution is a contributing factor to our health issues in of themselves, if not THE total cause of what is ailing all of us.
You can’t be certain it’s the fumes that are making you ill, or that the fumes you’ve been breathing are toxic. You need to insist that the air be tested. And as others stated, you need to speak to a physician. If toxins from the plant are causing you medical problems, and your employer (fed or non-fed) is not providing an environmentally safe working condition by shielding you from the bad air, it becomes a Worker Compensation issue (as an occupational disease) and must be medically documented anyway. So start with your own doctor, not theirs.
This is a very good suggestion, thank you for posting. I guess I could start with our Safetly and Health office to have the air tested. And, yes, I called to get an appointment with an integrative medicine doctor, who people in this area are raving about. Well, I can’t get an appointment with him until I take one of his seminars which is in April!
On March 15 (soon!) I will have a total of 32 years service with the federal gov’t and this might just be the thing that will give me another good reason to retire early and do what I really want to do with my life.
Thank you all for responding and I hope that no one else has to deal with environmental pollutants in their enviroment.
I used to work for a state government. I highly recommend retirement!
Best of luck in whatever you decide. (You shouldn’t have to be forced out of work if you don’t want to be. But I’m pretty happy with my early retirement. ) Wishing you a healthier future either way!
