A Writers Life?

Do you ever get the feeling that you’ve chosen this lonely life in order to keep all the other crap that invades our life far from our reality? Sometimes I wonder if I’m crazy spending all this time cramped up in my office. Does everyone else out there feel like their an over-avoider?

No, I live by the Jimmy Buffett school of writing. Live it first, then write it down.

I’m not sure what you mean by over-avoider.  I’ve been called anti-social. (I’m a novelist.) I know I’ve often, and maybe too often, lived only while I write, in what I write.  And isolation? You tell yourself you’re used to it, claim you don’t mind it, maintain it’s the necessary condition.  My isolation at a keyboard started when I was in high school.  So you know (considering the parameters of this website) how long it’s been!  It becomes a very difficult habit to break, even when you want to.

Strange you feel alone – I joined a writers group and have found the meetings and workshops are absolutely wonderful – we share our work and any comments are given with sensitivity and postive encouragement. When I was writing my NaNoWriMo last November I took my laptop to soccer games and gym classes so I most certainly was not alone. Our web site may inspire you:  http://wfscsherwoodpark.com  we welcome virtual members as well as local.

I tried one writers group and I thought it was going to be great but they were a little clicky. I couldn’t get a word in edgewise so I eventually bowed out. I may start looking for another local one. Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out.

I’m just beginning to write. I love it. I’m an artist, and in that we are connected. I was a sculptor for over twenty years. I loved it also, and was successful. I just add that to say, when I decided to go into a different direction, I wasn’t quitting, I just needed something new

If a painter changes mediums, say from oil to water color, no one will give it a second thought. If a writer changes genres, say from novels to essays, also no problem. But dare an artist in one discipline switch to another discipline, entirely, well, now you’ve opened up perhaps a poem of mud pies. or a sculpture of short stories.

Sound to me like you might give yourself a well earned sabbatical. Since I’ve been a clay artist, I know how healing that medium can be. I’ve taught many people over the years. It has helped some get redirected.. Have fun.
