1. Embrace it From Anne Kreamer in Letting go, going gray “I think that the movement for women to view gray hair differently requires leadership. We need a few people to go out there and say, ‘Hey man! Stop the craziness and let’s move past this!’”

3. Highlight along the way From nellie in I want to stop dyeing my hair. What is the best way to let it go silver? “My hair dresser suggested growing out the color as much as I could stand, then having highlights put in and getting as short of a cut as I could tolerate. It took about a year to completely rid myself of the colored hair. I have never looked back! I get lots and lots of compliments – at least twice a week, from both men and women!”

I would love to grow out my dyed hair on go what ever color grey it is now however, I have the skin tone color that makes me look like a member of the living dead with grey or silver hair. Any suggestions.
Connect with someone trained in color analysis and makeup and create a beautiful new look embracing your skin tones.
Tho, I think it’s wonderful a woman can embrace her age and the fact one’s hair turns gray, I feel like 35; I have never felt better in my life. I have an awesome hairdresser who does highlight my hair and uses blonding to disguise the roots when growing in. It works wonderfully. For myself I embrace my age, but I also embrace myself to be who and what I wish to be, both with my hair, my body, my makeup, my self care, my reading, my education, and my activities. Refraining from letting the gray all be there, keeps me sailing and fishing and going, and feeling vibrant and alive. Somehow, not society (but I) am not ready to turn that corner, and that is what really matters, is what I feel and think.
I have just started this process and my hairdresser is also great at doing this. I stopped using a base color and am now doing the blending with blond and a dark caramel. I love it.
I decided to stop washing my gray hair so much to keep it from being so dry. I brush it a lot and the natural oils have come along and made it smooth, shiney and full of body. I’m pretty happy with it.
Do not hesitate when you decide to go grey just do it. I used to dye my hair and when my husband became ill I did not have the time for the beauty parlor so one day I asked for a good short cut no color and within 3 months I had a lovely blended grey mop of hair. I love it and nobody has said “You look older” usually they say I”wish I could grow mine out” Do it you will look wonderful
Gloworm..FUNNY…I loved your response…
I am exceedingly fond of my silver and white hair(as stated elsewhere here) I have a swingbob (below doublechin length in front)with bangs…about 3 decades ago a woman who had been styling my hair for over 5 years apparently lost her tiny mind and cut my chin length swingbob to about an inch all over(and NOT in a good way!) She said ,”SURPRISE! ” twirled the chair around for me to see(I had been reading a book–silly me)
I will spare you all the gory details but in the intervening years that it took to grow my hair back to some semblence of one length I did not color it and boy was it an awful battleship grey color…my son informed me that it made me “look old and mean”(he was in gradeschool at the time)…that was the day I became a redhead and ricochetted through the colorwheel(except for really dark shades)from then until chemo time…
Question. I had previously colored my hair and now have decided to let the grey grow in, it seems it is a lovely shiny silver, yet I still have plenty of my own brown hair too. However, because i had previously colored, i now have roots where that has grown out (covering greys) and the new grey is growing in. Any tips on how to deal with this?
Highlights, heavy highlights!!
regarding #6…exactly!
I had to downgrade the salon to find a person who would just cut my hair.
I’ll never go back! But you have to be sure of yourself. Women who dye their hair have the attitude, oh, she could look so much younger! Sorry, but the color flattens out when hair gets gray. Personally, my hair looked a lot whiter when it was just the roots showing
It is what it is. But I’ll defend to the death my right to dye it. LOL!
I love having gray/silver hair. Most people don’t like your gray/silver hair because they think you look old! Another person’s opinion really does not count! It’s your hair, you have had it since birth – it’s what you do with your gray/silver hair that counts! Make the best of it! Have an open and honest opinion about yourself and the changes that your hair maybe going through! Create a new hair style that you have never had before! Go for it!
I started turning “white” in my early 20′s, so have struggled with this issue for the past 30 years. When it got to the point where I had to touch up the roots every 10-14 days, it was just too much hassle. Plus, I have now reached the age where I feel comfortable with my white hair, and don’t feel that it makes me look a lot older than my age. I do like to keep my hair fairly short, because it seems that a “little bit goes a long way”. I also like that having white hair is like being a blank canvas, I can wear so many bright, vibrant colors that all seem to go well with my hair.
went gray 2 yrs ago and love it.. a great cut for sure
I cut my hair every 2 wks….it 8wks before all the color was gone… … My hairdresser did not want me to go gray…. but now she thinks it looks great… and Now I match all my brothers.. who look great with salt and pepper…..
I have waist length gray hair – one daughter loves it, the other constantly says I should dye it red! I’m free from that and so determined to embrace all the changes that come with growing old gracefully
I would so love to have long hair again. Wear it proudly!
Well, ladies, I finally did it. I am all natural. I was one who said “never” to gray hair but I love it! Mine is a very pretty silver. People actually ask me if I have it highlighted. So many of my friends and co-workers love it too! It took some guts but that’s OK. If you’re comfortable with who you are then so will everyone else.
always remember that the majority of bealth and beauty products in your drugstore contain sodium laurel sulfate, or some derivative of that which is NOT HEALTHY! Tests have proven that it is linked to alzheimer’s and more.
Always look for shampoos and conditioners at your organic, healthy food stores- brands like Kiss MY Face, Nature’s Gate, and a host of others provide perfect products for my long gray hair that keep it smooth, shiny, and elegant! NO MORE CHEMICALS!
I am trying to let my hair go gray. i did a few mopnths back color it and i hated the auburn color. it has been hard on me as and over 50 woman because my own mom is 69 and still gets her hair colored at the salon. i just want to let mine go . how i can i do this with confidence, thanks joann
JoAnn It’s your head do what you will with it. Others opinions don’t matter as much as your own. Own your hair, and just let it go.
I want to go gray but have tried several times and was told I look old and sickly. I’m 52! What is best for Women of Color?
I have let my hair go grey, and have never looked back. Also Where is there a law that we are all to cut our hair short, and look like Q tips? Mine is long and I am going to keep it long and strong. I am looking forward to see how this all unfolds, and not shrink from it. Walk in confidence my friends we are matriarchs, it’s ok to be us, all natural.
If you have the chance, don’t start coloring it in the first place. When I first started to go grey, I tried the wash in kind of dye once. It didn’t match my natural color so I quit. I wore it long for awhile but thought it made me look bald if I pulled it back. I agree with the great cut advice. I get comliments on my grey hair all the time.
I am very happy with my hair since I stopped covering the grey. I wanted to mention how much this has resored time to my schedule, as well as money. It has been a good step in moving toward simplifying my life. As I get older, I seem to be responding to so many more demands — from jobs, teenagers, aging parents, etc. I would rather take the little time I have to spend on myself and do something more fun and relaxing than color my hair! And it’s one more thing I don’t have to think about or plan — one less item on my endless To Do list. Others will find the time and money spent worth it because coloring their hair makes them feel good. But to me it was just a nuisance. Now I feel free to just be myself (with a little makeup — haha)!
I quit dying my hair when I was 53. My daughter gave it up when she was 43. Neither of us has even considered going back. We love it.
i am 43 but had gray hair since i wAs in my 30s so now i want to go gray and i am letting my roots grow but i have some low lights, and my hair to longer than my sholders whocan tell me what to do please
