Women 50+ Know: Great strategies for losing weight

Annie 1. Share an entree.
From Annie in How can I drop weight effectively when I'm over 55 and my metabolism has slowed down?
"My husband and I go out to diner and we share the main dish and also order a cup of soup for each.Restaurants usually serve double the amount you should consume.  I started measuring some foods to get a grasp of the portion size and it has really helped."

Jeannine agreed:
"US portions are HUGE! Share a main course in a restaurant in order to have a shared first and/or desert. It works!"

mscoach 2. Think thin.
From mscoach in Diet anxiety - any advice?
"Is it the idea that it won't work that is daunting or making some changes to your lifestyle that seems big? Small changes--starting with how you talk to yourself about the possibility of changing--will add up to lost pounds and better health. The whole diet thing puts a time limit in our minds--such as, in 30, 60 or 90 days I'll be off this diet and will go back to my "normal" way of eating. This is where things fall apart. The little changes, moving more, adding in some more veggies and taking out some starches, are a 'forever' thing. Depriving oneself never works for long does it?"

Janice Taylor 3. Use dark, small plates!
From Our Lady of Weight Loss in Top 5 ways to set your table for change
"Studies show that people will eat whatever is put in front of them and, in fact, they are actually left feeling more satisfied when using salad sized plates instead of dinner plates. In addition, using dark plates diminishes appetite."

mscoach 4. Use the buddy system.
From mscoach in Diet anxiety - any advice?
"I'd suggest finding some like minded friend or group to give you some support. It's easier to stick to something if we have an accountability partner. Even a food journal has been shown to help people make changes and lose weight."

Simply Impressive 5. Be cautious with "fat-free" and "low fat" foods.
From Simply Impressive in Fat facts to help drop the "holiday 10"
"Lots of ‘fat free’ or ‘low fat’ foods contain high-fructose corn syrup. While the food may not contain fat, your body processes high fructose corn syrup as if it were fat, so be really careful when choosing your low-fat and fat-free ingredients."

LindaR 6. Balance food and exercise.
From LindaR in I need to lose some weight!
"I've been struggling with weight for oh, say about 50 years now, and the only thing that has worked consistently for me is: 1. eat less; 2. move more. Over the years I've had to find my own comfort level with this strategy; sometimes I trade french fries for ice cream, for example, but overall find that I know what things taste like and don't need to eat them over and over and over and over."

GISMAMA 7. You have to eat to lose weight.
From GISMAMA in Weight loss, my daughter and me
"Ladies, quit doing yourself a disservice by eating too little (my problem - as well as a lack of exercise). All you do is put your body into 'starvation mode.' Get professional advice as to how to start and keep trying. Eventually, you WILL find a program that works for you!"

From Bobbi in How can I drop weight effectively when I'm over 55 and my metabolism has slowed down?
"...you must eat at least 3 small meals a day, never starve yourself or skip breakfast, and don't eat within one hour of doing to bed...".

lauree 8. Set reasonable goals.
From lauree in How can I drop weight effectively when I'm over 55 and my metabolism has slowed down?
"What seems to work in the end is to have realistic goals, using a food diary to see what you habits are and if they are in syc with weight loss and then making some goals that fit with what you can realistically achieve."

silentnomore08 9. Use physical reminders to motivate yourself.
From silentnomore08 in How can I drop weight effectively when I'm over 55 and my metabolism has slowed down?
"I have a can of DP [Dr. Pepper] in the frig door that has been unopened since June 2007 - just to remind me that I can drink it if I want to - but why would I want to go back to being overweight, tired and rundown? Besides, my new skinny clothes would not fit anymore - and I am giving the others away.
And, to maintain the motivation: I have a pair of size 16 CWC jeans purchased for $7.99 online that I try to get into on the first day of every month. The day I can zip them up you will hear me shout!!"

Janice Taylor 10. Believe in yourself.
From Janice Taylor in Janice Taylor: Our Lady of Weight Loss
"I woke up one morning very fat, and I went to one of those group meetings where people weigh in and obsess about food. I had been there several times and had lost the weight, then gained it back again. I was feeling very down and defeated before I even began, and I sat down in a chair and just thought to myself, 'I’m never going to do this.' And that is when I heard Our Lady of Weight Loss, and she said to me, 'If you think you’re never going to make it, you never will. Make weight loss an art project.'"

I started a routine that hasn,t caused me to lose weight..I am about 5 lbs overweight. I was doing yoga and pilates twice a week and the pilates really helps you lose the tummy and than our teacher fell and needed a knee operation so we probably won,t see her till fall. however 2 ladies decided that we need to keep up the routine even if it means a dvd.. our multipurpose room has a big projector so our routine has been..on monday zumba and pilates and water aeorbics..tues yoga, and water aeorbis, wed pilates, thurs yoga and water aerobis friday pilates and water aerobis.  \i don,t like water aerobics so swim and walk in the water for that hour.  at the same time my insurance sent a letter to their seniors offering free gym memberships.  I live in a 55 plus community that has many facilities so i picked curves and get that in 3 days a week.  this month i am in israel visiting my children and believe me i have exercise withdrawal systems but brought dvd,s with me and get in as much as possible.  in any case i didn,t lose my 5 lbs but did lose 9 and a half inches. curves measures once a month and weighs.  do you have curves in your neighborhood.  they also offer a weight program. shula

I'm the idiot who accidentally hit the reply button a hundred times.

Are you through menopause?

STOP weighing yourself...maybe you build muscle, like I do. I even have a diaphram bulge from laughing.

get a little hungry and groove on it. Try on the pants.

MAKE WEIGHT LOSS AN ART PROJECT!  What a revelation.  I never thought of weight loss as a creative process but I do now.  Thank-you! SEB

I always thought that I was cursed with my mother's fat "genes."  In 2002, I got a complete holistic body analysis and found what foods I could and couldn't eat and what supplements my body needed to function correctly.  Seven years later, I am still in my Size 2 JEANS. Bottom line don't become a victim of the media-claim your body NO EXCUSES.

Hi Pixie, where do you get a holistic body analysis and how much does it cost?  Thanks from Dani's Mom.

I followed the dog food diet:  Find a friend who also wants to change their eating patterns.  Buy two tins of the most disgusting dog food.  Set a realistic goal - weight and date.  Divide this into weekly goals to ensure safe eating and exercise.  Meet and compare experiences and help each other along the way.  The one who doesn't make it has to invite at least 50 friends to watch her eat the whole tin!

I would make sure what is in that can of dog food.  It can be disgusting if you read the label.  I wouldn't let my dogs eat most of what is sold for them.  I know you are just joking though.  LOL

11. Stay away from white foods - sugar, white flour, white rice, potatoes! Stick with foods that are lower on the glycemic index. It works for me!

A little over a year ago, I was told that I was in the prediabetic range. I was pretty shocked at this news as I didn't have a clue. My family practictioner was the one that delivered the news to me and advised me to eat more vegetables and fruits and pretty much that was all the advice I was given except a prescription that would help lower my blood sugar. I was also told that if I lost some weight that would also help.

The first item I got rid of was sugar and regular creamer in my coffee and switched to sugar free creamer. I also started eating whole grain cereal for breakfast. I was one of those who sometimes skipped breakfast. I then replaced white bread with whole grain. The same with pasta and brown rice for white. Most of my education was researching on the internet for information on diets for diabetics and finding tasteful recipes. Within 6 months I lost 25 lbs. and after one year I had lost a total of 30 lbs. It seemed easy, although I still am making little adjustments here and there.

I guess what really worked is that I took this in small steps so it didn't seem so overwhelming at the start. After a while the changes became routine and now know what works and what doesn't. I also know after educating myself what foods work and how to incorporate them when fixing meals for my family. The best part, was shopping for clothes 3 sizes smaller and having fun doing it!

My Doctor told me that I was pre diabetic. Other than that, he did not tell me what to do, what not to do. I guess I am supposed to find out for myself on how to change my life style of eating.  This is my primary doctor. He has been my doctor since I was 17. I will be 55 on October 1st. I guess he expects me to get on the computer and find out what I am supposed to do for myself.  I am so angry at him I could just spit.  I have been overweight all of my life. He has never commented on how much I weigh. I had a heart attack last November. Even after that he has not said any thing about my weight.  I have lost weight over the years and gained it back, the usual routine for most of us women. I know how to eat the right things from being on so many diets. I have had luck with Diet Workshop I don't know if you have ever heard of it.  They use the food pyramid from the USDA. I have always lost weight with that program. So has my husband. He has lost 100 pounds the last time that we were on the program.  That was five years ago.  I only lost 30 pounds.  It seems like that is all I ever lose on any program. My body lets me lose 30 pounds, and then come to a stand still. I hit a plateau and thats it. I won't lose another pound. I start gaining weight again. Now that I am pre diabetic, and for all I know I could have full diabetes by now I haven't the slightest idea where to begin. I guess I will try the internet first. I hope that I can find out some good information. I wanted to thank you for your post. It really seemed like I had written it myself.

I have found that many primary care drs. are not taught how to help with solutions, just give a diagnosis.  My husband was diagnosed with type II diabetes in August.  I got on my computer and completely re-worked our diet.  He has lost 20+ lbs just by cutting soda and white things(processed flour, bread, etc.) We also walk 2.5 to 3 miles a day.  I'm losing weight much more slowly, but I will keep it up.  We both feel better and we are anxious to see what his next blood work shows.

I was diagnosed with glucose intolerant which the Dr. said I was close to being a diabetic and there are a lot of people in my family with diabetes. He said I should lose weight and sent to a dietitianto learn more about how to eat. I learned, of course, some of the thing I needed to know but I didn't connect with that and didn't lose weight.  I did see a quick commercial or a glance of it somewhere about the HCG diet.  I joined that through a Weight Loss Dr. clinic.  It is not the drugs that hype you up.  It is a hormone therapy.  There are lots of places on internet to find info about it.  I can't remember which Dr. started this diet about 60 years ago and it went through the phase and is back again.  I have lost 16 lbs. sin the latter part of Jan, 2010.  I like the food it suggests and it is much better than I ate prior to getting on the plan.

First, let me say that I own a Curves fitness franchise...I like to be open so you can judge my response for any bias. I have struggled with weight all my life. I know that I need to exercise, and that certainly helps keep me fit. But, I do overeat and that will always be a battle. I have been to Weight Watchers many times and always lose weight. But, I always gained it back. Curves has started to offer their weight management classes, free of charge. (even to non-members) Their plan is basically a combination of low carb/lower calorie but with a major difference. They have studied the effects of eating less and how it ruins your metabolism (both at Baylor U and Texas A&M) and teach the benefits of cycling in & out of the diet to continually boost your metabolism. It works. So, I now do that and have been doing much better. Still eat too much on occasion, but I really do try to keep a better balance. Hope this helps. I have nothing to gain if you check out your local Curves, as it's a franchise...locally owned. Leslie

Never Give Up -- remember everyday is a new beginning and you get the chance to start again.  If you eat something you know is not on your eating plan, forgive yourself and know that tomorrow is another chance to learn from your mistakes of the past.

It's all about choices.  Choose boiled potatoes over french fries, lean meat over hamburgers, baked or grilled chicken over KFC, angelfood cake and strawberries over cheesecake etc.  Plus exercise ... a must!  In the past 4 years of powerwalking I have fallen numerous times, broken my nose, broken my knuckle on my finger...not too much fun but you have to have a sense of humour and get back up and keep going.  The benefit is this:  I am fit, I am SO much more coordinated that I used to be.  I now actually ice skate!....but I got to tell you the first time I went (drove) to Curves and came home I had to lay down for an hour and a half!!!!  Hee..hee....that was 3 years ago now.  Another plus was I am no longer a borderline diabetic, my bloodpressure has come way down, no more head aches or constant depression and being home-bound (shut out everything and everybody) and was I guess waiting to die right there on the couch in front of my tv with a plate of nachos and my overweight Shi Tzu.  That's my story!

Avoid temptation - make it hard to indulge.

Don't keep junk food in the house.  If I want something that i shouldn't have I have to go out and get it but if it isn't in the house and I have a craving for something the chances are that before I go out and buy it the craving will go away.  Of course, Chocolate doesn't count in that equation.

I recently joined Weight Watcher's and am glad that I did - my worst enemy is me! Instead of overeating, I don't eat as much as I should, skipping meals and then not eating enough of the right foods.  I'm learning and in three weeks have shed 11 lbs! The meetings I think are important....the speaker that I have is fun, informative and gets everyone involved!  Everyone needs a buddy!

I am 55 and have struggled (along with many family members) with weight issues most of my life.  I have found the solution which has given so many of my friends and family a new, healthy life - this is a unique solution that addresses all the ills of fads and yo-yo dieting ... and yes, I became such a believer in this product, seeing it affect so many lives (losing the weight and KEEPING IT OFF), that i am sharing this with everyone i know struggling with this issue.  Here's some background ...feel free to contact me at: suemazonson@gmail.com if you'd like to know more. [i am not try to sell you on this, just "putting it out there"!]

What are the real causes of excess weight?

Being overweight is not your fault.
It doesn’t mean you’re a weak person with no willpower. The cause is a metabolic disorder called hyperinsulinism. The real culprits are food and advertising companies who spend BILLIONS every year convincing, courting, seducing and manipulating you into making all the wrong decisions for your health.
Food companies design foods that are not compatible with human metabolism –– foods that are addictive, make you repeatedly hungry and cause you to gain weight. These manufacturers love overweight people because they eat much more than those who aren’t – and that’s good for business. With most commercially prepared foods, you are caught in a vicious cycle of their making – and anyone who is locked into it will inevitably pack on the pounds.

Diets are the problem, not the solution.

If you’re an American, you’ve most likely been on a diet—probably many. Sometimes you drop some weight; but then you gain it all back and more. That’s what most dieting does. It keeps people overweight because it looks at excess weight from the wrong metabolic perspective. Think about it. Americans diet more than anyone on Earth, and yet they’re the most obese people on Earth. Even diets that do work are tough to follow and only temporarily successful at best.

The Silhouette Solution™ changes everything!
The Silhouette Solution is based on work that’s been extensively reviewed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Institute of Medicine and used in different forms by many high-cost medical weight loss clinics. With this program, you eat LOTS [carefully calibrated meals (5/day, protein-rich)] and you won’t be hungry.

Then, once you’ve dropped your initial weight, we transition you to a program pioneered by Harvard’s top weight management doctor, Dr. George Blackburn, so you can learn to keep the weight off once you’ve achieved your goals – and most importantly, stop your body from trying to return to its prior weight.

It’s not just about looks. There are many other huge benefits that come from “downsizing.” Dropping as little as 10% of your body fat can reduce disease risk significantly. Many people report better blood sugar control, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, less joint pain, improved energy, better self-image, and greater confidence!

This is how I did it, that and being past fatopause. Lots of apples, poached chicken breasts, raw vegetables. Take a break now and then, eat and be merry now and again.

Don't be in a hurry.

I'm a card carrying Weight Watcher member who believes in the plan.   It teaches members to eat healthy, watch portions, make activity a part of your life, and provides support from others at weekly meetings.  That all being said, losing weight on the plan is not quick.  Oh, sure, the first couple weeks make it seem easy when most lose more than a couple pounds ~ but a lot of that is water and just "following the plan to the letter".   The average loss is 1/2 pound a week as time goes on.  The most important thing is to incorporate the new eating/living strategies as a new lifestyle.  I'm committed to it and hope to reach a reasonable and healthy goal weight in 2010.  After that, I hope to maintain that with the new habits developed over time.   If you're interested or just curious, you can visit www.weightwatchers.com that has a good amount of free content and message boards to read to get a feel for the program.  If you decide to give it a try, I wish you the best in your efforts.
