What not to wear: Shoes that bring on plantar fasciitis symptoms

Every foot is different, and tolerance for varying types and levels of support and shoe shapes is different for everyone. However, there are certain brands and types of shoes that are more likely to cause your plantar fasciitis symptoms to return.

Anyone who has suffered plantar fasciitis symptoms understands why once the pain is gone, you never want it to return! You know the drill: rest, ice and ibuprofen, plantar stretches and massage, and maybe even orthotics are required to relieve your plantar fasciitis symptoms. And until the pain is gone, you suffer.

In Dr. Cathleen McCarthy’s blog, Podiatry Shoe Review, she recommends two rules for shoes:

  • Do not go barefoot.
  • Do not wear flip-flops.

Many Vibrant Nation members have road tested several brands of shoes. Member and coach Becky Williamson is a boomer fitness expert who’s very familiar with plantar fasciitis treatments necessary for foot pain relief. In fact, she’s experienced the first-step-in-the-morning pain for herself.

“Many of us who have plantar fasciitis never fully get over it, but we ‘manage’ it…” she said. “I’ve been relatively pain free for 5 years, but a couple of days of walking in sandals or wearing worn shoes will bring mild pain right back.”

Member Jodarby said, "...When I spent a summer wearing crocs recently, plantar fasciitis returned."

"I only found relief after buying the correct shoes and wearing them all day, every day," member Dorothy said. "When I did not have shoes on my feet I wore cushioning slippers but have to keep that to a minimum. I still have problems from time to time if I walk a lot or wear dress shoes, but I can keep it manageable by wearing the shoes I had properly fit by people who know the condition."
