I started the car and heard Ruth on Fresh Air stating, "My Mother has been dead for years and is still controling my life." An intriguing thought. I wondered how many other woman might feel that way.

You are fortunate to have had such a strong maternal influence……….good or bad!!! My mother is dead……and I feel ambivalent.
So true. We let old tapes run in our heads and feel guilty if we depart from them. It’s the realization and profound belief that your choices are as valid as theirs were and the forgiveness for what you felt as control, that finally sets you free
Thank you, tha is what makes me believe we women could change the world if we put our minds to it.
I know that resentment and bitterness regarding your parent(s) can control your life — and that isn’t from them, its within us who are resentful and bitter……..with forgiveness of what ever that person may have done, you are no longer keeping yourself “hostage” and you are released….IMHO
you are fortunate to have her example in your life.
That’s lovely and empowering! Thank you for the sharing.
Frankly, I felt it was a wonderful realization for the woman to realize that she was indeed blaming, not living her own life. Her writing this book helped her get on to living her own life and stop blaming others and I think that is marvelous.
agree , right on
Nope not me. I’m an adult. My dead mother’s impact on me is real….but I everyday have the ability to choose my life and my world for myself.
Blaming a woman dead for over 25 years for controlling your life is a complete, total and utter crock of crap.
Anyone who believes that needs to grow up, get resonsible for themselves, and get over their inner child.
