It’s still an ongoing, uphill climb to get our condo flood repairs completed (properly) and get moved back in. We’re running out of time and patience.
It’s been three and a half months of living in a hotel…a hotel that we have to move out of by August 4th as it’s fully booked. I have also told the restoration/repair company that we’re going to be out of town July 31st through August 2nd, so there’s really not much time…but nothing is scheduled, that I know of, to move us back home.
I don’t want to have to find and move into another hotel (if we could even find a decent one with a kitchenette at the height of tourist season); I want to move home. Although it’s going to be a total pain dealing with all the furniture, boxes, unpacking, and rehanging all our art, I just want to get it over with and put this whole episode behind us.
Today I will stop by the condo and see if the two-toned kitchen cabinet problem is getting fixed (the replacement lower cabinets did not match the colour of the original cabinets). I hope they are installed and the right colour. I honestly don’t know what I’ll do if they are still not right, but I do know certain people should be very nervous about that possibility!
One thing I am looking forward to unearthing in the boxes is my digital scale. I am curious to see what my weight is after a month on (non-synthetic) thyroid medication. After almost 2 years of steady weight gain, and a completely frustrating inability to lose an ounce of weight regardless of proper diet and exercise, I think I have dropped at least 5-7 lbs since starting the thyroid med last month. Hallelujah!
Clothes that I had bought to exactly fit me in just the last 3 months are now hanging loosely. If things keep going in the right direction, the new items will all need to be taken in soon. I was hopeful about turning my weight situation around and purposely bought items that should be easy for a tailor to take in. Not that I’ve ever had great experiences with getting clothes altered.
The thyroid med seems to have made a difference to my metabolism/fat burning and had an effect on my edema (water retention) problem that has been terrible since 2008. I’m less puffy and can now slip my rings on and off easily at all times of the day.
So, things are generally headed in the right direction but, like completing a marathon (which is not something I’ve ever done, I’ve only read about it!) the last bit of distance is proving to be challenging and difficult to traverse.
But, the finish line is tantalizingly close, and giving up or “settling” is not an option. I refuse to settle for anything less than the total restoration of my home to pre-flood condition, and I refuse to be matronly-looking with my menopause related flab and fluid. I won’t settle because, like the ad says, “I’m worth it.”

That is good news about the thyroid meds helping. I know I want to find mt scales when I think I’ve lost weight too. Otherwise not!
My parents had a flood in their condo, 2 years ago. Someone leaving a cigarette burning next door caused the sprinklers to go off. They were out of their place for 9 months! My dad can not move he has Als. Staying in a hotel that long was awful for him. What was the hold up? the insurance companies hardwood guy. My husband and I have a hardwood co. The insurance co, wouldn’t cover it, unless we used their people. It actually cost them more in the long run.
9 months?!? That’s so awful – and how frustrating about the hardwood situation and that they would not let your company help.
We had a quite a good initial ”honeymoon phase” with insurance and the repair company but, as things have dragged on, I feel they have lost focus and are not paying attention any more. I have sent three detailed “punch lists” of deficiencies that need to be fixed and they ignore most of it. They no longer respond to my e-mails and I am having to chase them to get responses.
In your parents’ situation, it’s lucky the sprinklers worked and the building didn’t burn. Although water damage is no fun to deal with, but it would not have been as life threatening as a fire. Our flood was caused by someone on a higher floor above us putting their marijuana “grow op” down the garburetor! It filled the kitchen sewer pipes with soil and plant material that backed up into just our unit.
