Negativity Creates Doubt
Things are going well, I’m starting to see the payoffs of eliminating negativity in my life and it’s becoming easier to do. Early mornings are my most vulnerable time. It just after I have noticed that I am awake that negative thoughts start trying to edge their way into my consciousness. I have always made it a practice to say a short prayer during that time. Now I am praying myself awake. I am using the Lord’s Prayer and I say it over and over until I am fully awake and have control of my thoughts.
Negativity takes many forms some more obvious than others but they all create doubt. The doubt negativity creates makes it difficult to take risks. It may be a risk to run a new rapid, try a new food, sing a difficult song, or stand up for something I believe in.
What would my life be like if I lived it boldly and fearlessly? I asked that question to a group of multigenerational women today during a discussion about an upcoming protest rally. They all thought I lived that way now. They’re right… up to a point. I’m susceptible to the seeds of fear and negativity that are planted by other people about who I am or things I want to do just like everyone else though.
The seeds are planted with dire warnings, opinions disguised as facts or predictions about the future by the news, popular culture and people calling themselves friends who are just looking out for me.
The people who plant them are often well meaning, they don’t want me to get hurt. Sometimes they are deliberately sabotaging. When I switched from a white water canoe to a kayak J. told me that it would be impossible for me to get a roll. Another friend told me that that man I was seeing wasn’t ready to date. Both of these friends simply didn’t want me to have what they didn’t have, but the damage was done. The seeds of negativity they planted (that I allowed to be planted) created doubts about my own abilities and in the case of the man, doubts about my own inner knowing.
Now, more than ever before we are called upon to takes risks of faith. We are being called on do more than we planned to do and be more than we think we are. That’s hard to do when we are planting seeds of negativity.
What are you planting today?
