A beauty tip from a non-beauty queen – soft shiny hair! Hot Conversation

I’m not in the habit of giving fashion advice or beauty tips, as I don’t feel the least bit qualified. ( Remember, I’m the one now living in Maine wearing boots and baggy pants.

BUT, I’ve stumbled into something shocking, and feel compelled to pass along.

Do you know you can leave conditioner in your hair? I mean the regular kind, not just the ones that say “Leave in Conditioner.” It makes your hair really soft. Not greasy! Who knew?

This is my second year escaping the Maine winter in perpetually sunny Arizona. As in Desert. As in really, really dry air. After about 6 weeks, my usually normal to oily hair, starts drying up and sort of standing out from my head. While it’s nice to have more “body,” I don’t like the feel of it. My normal hair is thin-ish, fine-ish – not great I admit, but I do like the soft, silky feel of it. I don’t know who I am with this brittle bush on my head. Feels like a cheap wig. Polyester.

Then I met a woman (younger of course – they tend to be up on the latest), I commented on her wonderfully thick, shiny hair. She told me that when she moved to AZ her hair got very dry. “Really, me too”! There were others around, “older” women like me – I half expected someone to say, “Oh honey, don’t you know — menopause!” (You mean even my hair is drying up?) Anyway, my fears were unfounded. Her secret, she said, was NOT washing out the conditioner! She just leaves it in and blow dries as usual. Viola – shiny soft hair!

Am I the only one that thought leaving in conditioner in would make your hair instantly lank and greasy looking? Even the brands that say you can. Never trusted them; never even considered buying them. What a stupid idea, leaving all that goop in your hair. I wanted clean.I wanted soft and fluffy.

But – I tried it. And it worked. Amazing.

Yesterday as I was having my hair cut, I decided I’d check it out with the stylist(30ish), to see if she knew about leaving in, non-leave in conditioner. She said, “Oh yeah, that’s fine. No problem. Just don’t use the ones that have protein in them.” (protein ?) I didn’t delve. Too much information.

So take it from Sarah, the fashionista with the shiny hair – If you live in a dry climate, or have problems with dry hair, try, leaving in the conditioner. What have you got to lose other than menopausal hair?

I’ve been using Moroccan Hair Oil. I use about a dime sized amount and put in my damp hair. It’s pricey at 40 bucks a bottle, but a little goes a long way. I have salt and pepper hair, on the course side, and it really leaves my hair soft.

It is one of the best hair conditioners I’ve ever used. It’s a thick oil that you rub through your hair when it’s damp. Use about a dime size, that’s all you need. It’s about forty bucks, but it lasts a long time. My hair is mostly gray now, and much courser than it used to be, but this stuff makes it very soft, with a nice shine.

Hey, I LOVE Moroccan Hair Oil but did you know that Sally’s Beauty Supply has a comparable product for aruond $ 8. a bottle. Yep!! It’s so great (and affordable) I even use it on my dog after his weekly shampoo to make his white coat shiny and easy to brush.  The product, made from Argan, is fabulous for those with tangly hair. Smells good, too.

I too love the Morrocan oil. I have snow white hair and most of the oils are amber in color and I cannot use them on my hair as they can change the color. A friend of mine shared this product with me which is clear

There is a lesser expensive Morrocan (Argan oil) from a salon product line called Enjoy” which I use on my skin and on the dogs coats…This whole line of Enjoy products are super (especially the Luxury line). At first blush they seem a little pricey but in reality they last so long that they are cost effective.

For several years I’ve left a variety of normal conditioners in my hair or I just don’t rinse it all out ,depending on the time of year, weather and the weight of the conditioner. For those wondering how much, what product etc…know that you just get the feel for it when you are in the shower and you run your fingers through your hair. You want to be able to easily get your fingers through your hair but you don’t want it to feel too heavy or too much. I tend to experiment with all products and you’d be surprised at the versatility of products. It’s much like cleaning products,it’s how much you use. A single drop of dish detergent in a 32 OZ bottle of water makes a great glass cleaner and it takes a whole squirt of it to wash dishes…You get the analogy. Hair products are no different.

I tried this because you recommended it, and I was surprised to discover it also added body to my baby fine but thick hair, so that it was easy to style. Thanks for the tip, Sarah.

UPDATE: I have been doing this “leave in conditioner’ thing for a few weeks now with a couple of different products that happend to be in my shower. As I was packing up, I found the remnants of my favorite Kiehl’s “volumizing” shampoo and conditioner, so used that – Ugg!! It didnt’ work. What was this? My hair was dull, and heavy. Where was the bounce and shine? Could it be…….? Yes – Protein! The conditioner bottle said clear as day “contains light proteins”. Now Sarah, didn’t that girl warn you? The moral is – read the label!

Good advice.  I have been doing this for sometime.  I notice also that if your hair isn’t really in need of a wash and looks a little under the weather, that  you can just dampen your hair and put a little conditioner in it. Viola… your hair looks great.  Just need to blow dry for a second or two depending on the thickness of your hair.

Sarah, this is the BEST hair tip I’ve gotten to date!  For the past two years I’ve tried all sorts of pricey remedies to combat my head of menopausal shredded wheat.   My stylist recommended a cocktail of Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream and Moroccanoil Oil Treatment.  Yes, it made my hair shine and it was controllable.  However, it comes with a price tag of $95 between the two products.  Today I used Sarah’s tip and didn’t rinse the conditioner from my hair.  The result was superior.  Thank you, Sarah!

I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to hear this is working for you too. Wow! What’s that old saying? “Every now and then, even a blind pig stumbles onto an acorn.” (or beauty secret!) Thanks for letting me know it wasn’t just me! S

Please, please, please give me more info! Please tell me what product you used, how much and how often…I’ve been at this all week, but can not decipher if a product has protein in it based on the ingredients…my hair is shoulder length, no color (natural grey) and I am desperate to add shine, also I ordinarily wash my hair 2 x’s/wk. Thanks for any info!!!!

Linny, you’re so funny! I’ve used several different ones – not even sure  what now, as they were in the shower in Arizona (I’m now back in Maine). What I’ve got here now, is something random called Abba (made in Az) It, like most, works. The only one I’ve failed with is my fancy Kiehl’s (sp?) that I buy at Sak’s when I’m in Richmond. But it says, plain as day, just under the name “with lightweight proteins”. So, don’t stress over it, just choose one you already have lying around, or like the smell of, or whatever. As long as it doesn’t say “protien”, try it – the worst that happens is you’ll have a sort of badish, flatish, dullish hair day! As for amount, it doesn’t take much. Just about quarter sized dollop. While I”m standing in the shower, I rub it between my palms a little, then run my hands through my wet hair to distribute, sqeeze out any extra moisture, then get out and towel dry it as usual before I blow dry. That’s it! I also found a little sample tube of somethig called “Satinwear” by Redkin at the back of my drawer when I was unpacking. Same kind of thing, you rub a little in your palms and run through damp hair before blow drying. As I remember though, it was sort of expensive. I tried it, and it was nice – maybe too nice? (not quite as fluffy) but very silky. Maybe it’s nothing but conditioner in a tube! Let me know what happens, I really am curious. Sarah
