Suggestive television: I want that cup of coffee!

It doesn’t matter what time of day it is. It doesn’t matter who the character is. I don’t care about the quality of the production. If I see someone pour or sip or hold a cup of coffee on screen, that’s all it takes: I want a cup of coffee.

Very seldom do I do anything about it. In fact, probably never, since it seems I can only watch television when it’s dark outside, which, of course, is generally at night, which means that no matter what, I’m so far outside the safety zone for caffeine that not even a magic spell could convince me to drink it.

Please, let’s just skip over the “can only watch television when it’s dark outside” part and move on the the power of suggestion.

Leaving aside any direct effect that advertising might have, is there a particular food or drink on TV or in the movies that affects you this way? Cinnamon buns? Roast beef? Dare I say it — coffee?

What do you do when the urge strikes?

I usually end up giving in after much struggle.  Especially since I’m trying to not eat anything after 8pm.  Very hard because night time tv consists of food, food, food.  Also my darling husband eats all night long right in front of me.  Lately I have cut down to eating 2 or 3 hersheys kisses, a yogurt, and some tea.  It’s still eating at night though still far from the goal.  So I have started knitting, can’t eat and knit.  I will tell you if I reach my goal consistently this way.

Matriarch – I make handcrafted jewelry.  I figured I couldn’t make jewelry and eat either.  When I was bingeing, I just put the tools down for a second, gobbled down handfuls of chocolate chip cookies, wiped my hands on a napkin, and went back to the jewelry.  Sigh.  I feel your pain.  (*_^)

Chocolate.  And… let’s see… chocolate.  Did I mention chocolate?  I’d eat nails if they were dipped in chocolate.

Every time I see that Reese’s peanut butter cup commercial, I have to restrain myself from attacking the screen. (^_^)

Pizza — if I see, smell it or even sense some else had it for lunch, I will not be happy until I have a piece….even to the point of buying a frozen pizza to satisfy that urge…..I’m sure it has something to do with my childhood, when pizza was a huge treat for us…an event….however after I have it, I won’t have that craving again for quite a while…..

I really do relate to that sudden desire for a cup of coffee.  Like you, I try to stick to my coffee routine-in my case, one cup in the morning.  But when I see it on tv or pass by a coffee house…oh, I want a cup.  On the few occasions when I have given in and had that extra cup, I find that I don’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would, and sometimes it even makes me feel kind of sick.  What does that mean?

Ijit, I have the same reaction. It’s often not quite as good at I think it’s going to be, and it’s definitely not as good as it smells. But still, if a character in a movie is drinking it, it’s all I see in the scene.
