I really hate stereotypes but sometimes they make their way stealthily into our subconscious.
Apparently I am guilty of harboring some male/female stereotypes – although I am loathe to admit this.
Everyone knows that on a cool evening when a woman in a light dress is chilly her gallant escort always offers his jacket — right? That’s the way it always happens in the movies. The guy gladly sheds his jacket to keep his lady comfortable. I’ve seen it happen many times in real life too. So I guess I just always figured that guys are generally more hot blooded than their women.
In my thirty-something years of marriage I myself have been the recipient of such chivalry now and then.
Then came menopause. All hot all the time.
In menopause it becomes more about how much I can yank off of my sweat dripping torso without becoming a public nuisance. So I’m not borrowing a lot of jackets.
The other day my husband was driving us downtown. It was a scorcher of a summer day and the ac fans were cranking away in a valiant attempt at keeping us from melting in our seats. I suddenly realized things had become noticeably warmer. Glancing over at the ac controls it was clear that someone had been messing with the temperature. Why in god’s name would anyone do that? It’s in the high 90’s!
I shot my husband a lethal glare and he commented sheepishly “it was getting a little cold in here”.
I’ll tell you one thing — I won’t be loaning him my sweater!

Hey Robin, I thought you were on BHRT?!? If so, there’s no way you should be such an inferno. Before BHRT I would put on the car’s A/C full-bore and direct every single vent on the dash in my direction – to no avail. Even in the icy interior, my husband would still lean away from me during a hot flash, they were so intense. He could feel the heat radiating off me and it even made him uncomfortable!
I have an appointment with my BHRT counselor next week. I seem to be experiencing a new wave of symptoms – possibly due to my last level adjustment. It will be interesting to see what the saliva test has to say this time. My face is breaking out and I was feeling a little down last week for no real reason (not at all like me), when I started plotting the murders of those around me (my classic PMS war cry) I realized that I probably need an adjustment. This summer has been a bitch!
Yup, sounds like an adjustment will be in order following your lab tests. Relief is in sight for you! I’m no expert but it sounds like the estrogen/progesterone balance is out of whack. FYI, too much progesterone (or too much in relation to the level of estrogen) apparently has a side effect of depression. Plotting murder (a telltale hallmark of irritability!) could indicate thyroid imbalance too – maybe get that checked as well (TSH, T3 and T4)?
You know I had most of my thyroid removed and I am on thyroid meds that are compounded. That was tested as well! So I am a veritable garden salad of hormones!
OOOHHHH, you meant “temperature” HOT! Never mind.
Sorry about the confusion. I did think of that when I came up with the title – but frankly right now the “other” hot issue takes the forefront for me. Its really hard to feel hot when you’re sweating!
