I just bought 164 bottles of water. Why why why would I do this? I’m not thirsty besides which I never drink water. Iced tea, a Fat Tire beer or a lively Sauvignon Blanc is my idea of quenching thirst. I needed 164 bottles because Mother Nature has followed me to California. No sooner had I escaped mounds and mounds of heaping white snow and limb numbing frigid cold in Chicago than earthquakes were rocking and rolling down the California coast. Crap. And help! I have no idea what to do. I teethed on tornadoes which btw scared the bejesus out of me regardless of my aspirations to play Dorothy in 6th grade. I’m pretty sure a fetal position is necessary for a twister or is that in case of a nuclear attack?
I went on the FEMA web-site for earthquake preparedness. Unhappily I am not ready. Apparently I have to be very wary of things falling on my head. This is key. Wide eyed I surveyed my townhouse and burst into tears. Yep, my head was definitely in danger. I’m supposed to duck under a desk, a table or pull a mattress over me. The table weighs less than I do, there’s no desk and I can barely change the sheets on the king size bed, no less pull the thing over my head. I am so screwed. Next on FEMA’s advice list is apres quake readiness. I needed sustenance for 3 days to a week. I haven’t had that much food at home my entire adult life.
In a total panic I hightailed it to the market. Frantically I ran up and down the aisles filling my cart with items that didn’t’ need refrigeration or heat in order to eat. I have 12 boxes of Captain Crunch and 13 bags of Oreos. I’d be safe, fat and high. My poor Lab Elliot would need sustenance also so I loaded a 20lb bag of Purina in for him and wondered if he’d share if I finished off the Oreos and cereal the first day. Schlepping the water bottles brought me to my knees. Exhausted and sweating I stopped to ponder why I hated snow.

I’m from the land of winter ice and snow as well and transplanted to California. I would rather be warmer and have to deal with shaking earth than the snow and ice anytime. Honestly I don’t think there is a way to prepare… what if after all the bottles of water are brought home the home collapses on it? I think when the time comes we will just have to deal with it, just as we did in the mid-west. Wishing you all the luck.
Thanks you’ve calmed me down. I agree I hate snow no matter how the house shakes…..I think? I admire your resolve!
In light of the crisis in Haiti, the timing of this blog entry (and its comments) is unfortunate.
I totally agree. I posted it before I knew about Haiti. It is unfortunate but I wrote it in lieu of the small tremors in CA. That’s all I can say.
