When I was a young girl, way back when, one of my favorite things was my Bozo and the Birds book. (Bozo was huge in the 50’s.) Along with the book came a record (yes, vinyl). Bozo narrated the book; I just loved it. I remember there was spoonbill and a toucan. I think there was a flamingo and a pelican too. Most little girls liked bluebirds, you remember them from the Disney classic movies don’t you? I always liked the more unusual birds. Maybe Bozo brainwashed me; I don’t know. Funny thing, I don’t like clowns anymore. I’m not scared or anything, I just don’t care for them.
In 1991 we took our kids to Puerto Vallarta for spring break. While on that trip I went to a cove all by myself. I was the only person there. While I was sitting in the water, brown pelicans flew in and sat next to me. Eventually there were at least 40 pelicans floating within 30 feet of me. It was kinda strange, but extremely cool. Too bad I didn’t have a waterproof camera with me.
Around 10 years later we were driving the kids to Key West during spring break. We were on one of the many bridges that you cross; when I looked out the window there was pelican flying, just next to our car. I never even saw him flap his wings. It was as if he was going on the trip with us. He was huge and fast. Very cool.
There was a funny clip yesterday on the news about a reporter in Australia and a pelican. It looks like he’s being “goosed”; or perhaps the more accurate term would be “pelicaned.” Well either way, it’s pretty funny.
