It’s National Ice Cream Soda Day- yuck!

This is a PSA- For those of you who must know these things- This is National Ice Cream Soda Day. Personally, I cannot understand the allure of these concoctions. It seems to me like a waste a perfectly good soda and scoop of ice cream.

It is vanilla ice cream though, of which I am not the biggest fan. (So it isn’t like wasting a scoop of chocolate.) I know, I stand alone in that view too- with vanilla being the #1 flavor in the U.S.

Of course in my family, I’m the loner. Everyone else thinks ice cream sodas are the best thing since sliced bread and Doug actually prefers vanilla ice cream to chocolate; the poor, confused soul.

(I’m just now realizing how many differences there are between us. First the toe thing and now this? What’s next? Are twin beds in our future?)

I think of vanilla ice cream like Doug thinks of a baked potato. It’s just a vehicle for all the other good stuff to put on top of it.

If you’re all hyped up to mix any two foods together, how about mac ‘n cheese with lo mein, or perhaps sweet and sour spaghetti bolognese? My mouth is watering already.

Now before you dismiss me as totally depraved, I must report that while dining at K Paul’s, one of the most famous and most popular restaurants in New Orleans,  we were shown how “Chef”, (Paul Prudhomme), takes his gumbo- with a scoop of potato salad in it.

Now the thought of those together was less than appetizing to us. However, once you get over the initial – EWWWW, it’s actually amazingly good. Who knew? I never would’ve thought to put one into the other. You don’t stir them together. You put the scoop of potato salad into the gumbo then get a bit of each on your spoon with each bite.

(As far as ice cream sodas go, I’m not sure that people really love them all that much as much as they bring back happy memories from their childhood.)

So no cohabitating ice cream and soda for me please. I’d prefer mine A la carte.  I am but a simple soul.

BTW- Just to show that I’m totally objective, I will admit that the pastel ice cream sodas are quite pretty.

You’re welcome. (If you need any other high-fat, high sugar thing thrown at you just let me know.) You sound bummed. What’s wrong?

Wow — gonna have to check my mood and words and presence.  Not feeling bummed — more thoughtful and funny.  Had lunch with my daughter yesterday and had to ask her – for the 100th time — what’s that you say about fat/sugar?  Here it is — ‘the only thing better than fat and salt is fat and sugar’.  I think that’s funny and spot on.

Enjoy New York — how can you not??
