Well 2009 made sure it bit me right in my ample derriere before it went on it’s way. We got to Austin and set up ready to participate in the First Night celebration. Just as we were ready for business a cold front blew in. Blew in is an understatement. It came through like a locomotive, tearing down anything in it’s wake. A 15′x15′ outside bar, built especially for the event, succumbed to the wind and went down. An EZ tent did too. (However, as my dad used to say, they’re made from Prince Albert Can and a mouse can toot in their general direction and they topple over if not properly anchored).
Other vendors outside, ran inside to shield themselves from the incessant wind and dropping temperatures. Stubborn as I am though, I waited it out on the plaza for almost two hours, til I also moved inside. Needless to say, the event didn’t go nearly as well as we’d hoped. A bright spot was when a woman who I’d painted( Christine) and her friend (Barb) invited me up to the VIP party upstairs.
They were a Godsend, and kept dragging their friends over to be painted. Without them, we would’ve gone in the hole for sure. Anyway, our night was a bust, but I made two new friends; that’s a good way to start the new year.
True to my preachings of last year, I’ve decided on something that I’m chucking for the new year. Somehow, I’ve gotten listed it seems on every political and environmental crusade website in cyberspace. (I’m not even political). I know how some of the sites found me; I filled out a form or signed a petition. But some of them I have no clue. I know I should, but I can’t care about the purple algae that grows under the big toe of the red crested booby that nests on tropical rocks in El Nino years on an atoll somewhere in the Pacific.
I just counted, I get at least fifteen emails a day either begging for contributions to some cause or trying to guilt into contributing m. Enough, I’m done with it. I’m still keeping up with my animal sites; that’s my weakness. But I just realized that I was spending almost an hour a day reading all these other emails. I’m just me, and last year I was getting spread too thin- mentally, at least. (And with my brain, the thicker the better). BTW- Does anyone else turn the sound off on the ASPCA ad “In the Eyes of a Angel? I have 6 rescue dogs right now. I’m doing all I can. That ad is very disturbing. It’s over 4 minutes long; and I can’t believe they’re really getting more contributions because of it. Everybody I know turns it down. I was just wondering.
I hope everyone has had a good start to the year. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that we left all that BS behind us.

It’s generated to bring the most for the least. It’s on when “they” know we’re home and are in the giving spirit. I’m with you though, after seeing it through once, I can’t watch it again. I just tune it out or do something else during the commercial. My heart goes out the those poor creatures. But I resent the manipulative way they’re trying to generate funds. I also wonder if the funds would really go to them or to the administrative costs at the tune of 99%.
Beleive me, my heart goes out to them as well. I do everything I can for all animals. However, I agree with you that it’s manipulation. I just can’t help but wonder how much they make if so many people turn it off? Maybe they’re just hoping to upset people enough that they’ll send in money to get the ad off the air.
Believe me, my heart goes out to all the animals as well. I agree with you that it’s manipulation. I just can’t help but wonder how much they make if so many people turn it off? Maybe they’re just hoping to upset people enough that they’ll send in the money to get the ad off the air.
I am a loving person and animals are one of my greatest concerns. I can cry at the drop of a hat about an animal that is not getting treated well, not even what some people would call abuse. I despise the ad. Like someone mentioned I think they would get more money if there was something positive put on about like how an animal can enrich your life and or the happiness you would bring to an animal. I have 7 cats at this time and they were all adopted from the street or someone that needed to give them away to a home. Let me tell you my cats have a wonderful home and I love them so much. They are the #1 priority in my house. I can never tell them enough or show them how much I love them. They are my babies. I think right now the fad is to put ad on that hits where it hurts. That ad hurts and I either turn it down or go do something else and cry. I just can’t do more. I have 7 cats that would be homeless having more cats if I hadn’t taken them in. I feed and give them vet care and let them know they are loved. How can we get the ASPCA ad off the air. I have also heard the ASPCA is not very good to the animals themselves.
I have 6 dogs, all rescues that came to us one way or the other. Blondie had to have surgery a few months ago. Blackie just got spayed. It’s expensive, as you well know. I’m doing all I can. I have not adopted a dog from the ASPCA. We did get one of our dogs from their steps. A young man was sitting on the steps outside crying as he was holding the leash of his dog before he was going to turn him in. We adopted Simba on the spot. Simba is 15 now and I think just celebrated his last Christmas. However, he’s had a great life. As far as getting the ad off the air, perhaps if we all were to write in, or somehow start a petition.
Oh, meigler the story of how Simba came to live with you brought me to tears. Now that’s the feeling the ASPCA should be going for–tears (and donations) generated by joyful stories of miraculous adoptions and how pets change our lives. I’ll bet a national commercial of Simba’s story would generate as much money per ad as does the “Eyes of an Angel” spot.
Did you keep in contact with Simba’s prior owner?
Yes, even though I mute the sound on their commercial at the first strains of the song, it does move me to pull my fur-baby close for a big hug.
I have three letters for you ladies: DVR. My husband and I have taken to recording everything we watch regularly, or specials we see advertised that we would like to see. We then watch when we want, and the best part is we can fast forward through the commercials! And it only takes 40 min to watch a 60 min show!
I agree that the ASPCA commercial is too much. We FF or mute. That commercial and others like the children, the polar bears, etc., are all aimed at guilting us into giving. (got enough guilt from my mother growing up. lol) We give because we want to, not because we feel bad for not giving.
I don’t yet have a DVR. However I think that’s a great idea and will do just that when I get one.
If you have cable, cable companies offer a digital box with built in DVR for just a few more bucks a month than the regular digital box.
That’s a good idea. Can you get that if you just have basic cable?
If you have a digital box for your cable (the large box the size of a VCR, not the little boxes they came out with after all the digital change), you should be able to get it. However, I guess it depends what your cable company calls basic.
I’ll be checking into it. Thanks.
Agree with you wholeheartedly. The grandkids like to watch animal planet and whenever I catch that commercial on we turn it off, change channels for a while and come back. They ( g’kids) become transfixed by it and do not realize how they are being manipulated. It disturbs me that these political agencies are allowed to put this type of material on TV, especially on channels that children watch. I believe it is exposing them to violent and fearful thoughts and ideas they do not need to expereince at a young age. To me the commercials are as injurious to children as they say humans are to the animals they depict.
Well said.
Not only do I turn down the sound, I change channels. It hurts me too much to see it. I’m an animal lover so I can’t understand how anyone can give up a family member or mistreat them.
Daisy, a sweet Westie mix. was abandoned by her owners. Doug went to change the locks on a house after the previous renters left and there she was, hopping in and out of the bedrom window, which they’d left open a crack. I knew a neighbor who was going to leave her dog tied up outside during huricane Ike, I shamed her enough that she had him in the garage during the storm. (I checked). After Ike, he mysteriously “disappeared” and now has a fabulous new home with folks who love him.
((((((meigler, Doug, and their canine family))))))
You better believe I’m upset with the ASPCA ad. I’ve always supported their effort to collect Dog Food at local grocery stores and have a rescued shih tzu. I even called them and told them I not only mute the ad but cover my head so I can’t see or hear the number or web site. The person I talked to on the phone said they’ve increased their donations with that ad over more than 50% than the past years. I was disgusted!
Wish their supporters had more say but looks like as long as people are made to feel guilty for not helping and they send money, they seem to have more say then we do.
I figured that they were getting a lot of donations with that ad. However, as you can tell by all the comments here, a lot of folks feel just as I do and really hate it.
So you’re against donations to the ASPCA? If donations are up 50%, awareness is probably up. Which can only be a good thing. You talk about manipulation. But what are all other commercials on television? When your kids watch Nickelodean, or the Disney Channel, they’re bombarded by messages for the newest toys. They can’t be any worse. You don’t like this ad for the way it makes you feel. And in a society where it’s mostly about ME, it’s good to feel a bit of sympathy. Imagine the effects of it on people who AREN’T aware, or don’t care as much as you do about animals in need. We’re in a society that hears only the loudest message. And this one is a very loud message. Also, political campaigns, on the web or on tv, are no worse at asking you ten million times for a donation, or for a jump to a cause.
Of course I’m not against donations to the ASPCA. I don’t think anyone who has voiced their opinion here is. However, I don’t like the way they are doing it.
That’s a big leap to take — just because someone doesn’t like an ad doesn’t mean they’re against the entire organization seeking donations. Asking someone to give and guilting them into giving are two different things. As far as I’m concerned, it’s tantamount to emotional coercion. I would be against this type of ad from any organization.
As for it’s effect on people that don’t care — NONE– they don’t care. My guess is that it’s the people that are already giving that are giving more. That ad goes beyond seeking sympathy. It’s overkill.
I believe Isantanadiaz is on target — and with good reason. Disgust at donations being up by 50% …followed by an, “I figured” is as poignant as the marketing vehicle.
I cry when the commercial airs. There was a brief time where I would turn away. But I have come to believe it is important to face it. It is far more important for the strength and power of the message to persist and extend its reach. I would even like to see it ratcheted up a couple notches.
I don’t care if the delicate sensitivities of a few are disturbed. The end justifies the means in this case and those that can’t handle it… too bloody-well bad.
Whine and moan, solicit and write your letters. At times of economic crisis, animals suffer far worse and support agencies are desperate. Adopting and rescuing is noble…but it is hardly a sole justification to not do more.
If you want to stop feeling discomfort or sadness when that commercial comes on, get off your ass and do something. Move to action. You are feeling discomfort…FOR A REASON. Stop blaming the messenger and start looking inward. You can do more and you know it.
I always have to change the channel when that ad comes on. It hurts my heart too much to watch it. Glad to know I’m not the only one. I thought I was being overly sensitive.
I know what you mean. I MUST turn off the sound, change the channel or just turn the tv off altogether, If I see a dog running in the streets of Memphis,TN I will start to cry because of the way “people”? treat them. I have been giving to the Humane Society long before I saw that commercial. I know we must take care of these animals who have been abandoned, beat, starved by inhumane people but cannot condone that commercial that lasts for many minutes. Four minutes? Seems much longer than that.

You’re not overly sensitive Ros. I guess you can tell that though by almost all the comments that have come in.
I hate that ad and the other one too…I am a total animal lover but I cannot listen or watch that ad. Am glad I am not alone on this
I hate that ad and the other one too…I am a total animal lover but I cannot listen or watch that ad. Am glad I am not alone on this
It would appear that there’s actually a large contingent of folks who feel like this. You are not alone.
I cannot stand this ad! All it does is make me want to run and hide. I have always had cats and have only obtained two from a breeder, the other three were rescued in some way one from a highway with busy cars, one from a home where the man didn’t want kittens and would kick their birthing box. I don’t need to be smacked in the face with pictures that MAY OR MAY NOT BE cruelty or just ill animals with loving owners, from some vet’s office. I used to give regularly to my Humane Society or ASPCA, but I will not give now because of manipulation. I am getting a new cat this spring and I will adopt it from a shelter…that is my donation. I don’t need to be traumatized when watchcing TV by this crap.
I think “in the face” is a good way to describe it. Sad, that it’s not in a “good” way.
the ad turns my stomach so i switch the channel. I still have 2 rescued dogs which i adore. While in CT my sister in law tried to give me a shitzu (sp) and my husband had a fit. My SIL knew she could not keep the dog due to housing rules but still she brought the dog up from Ohio. My nephew sold the dogs for $600.00 to good families she could not leave well alone. She thought my niece (her daughter) would take the dog if it did not work out. The dog is lovely but only 6 months old so it has alot of energy. So my husband freaked. He loves dogs and takes care of ours 100%. He reminded me that we had agreed to no more dogs until retirement when these dogs would be in heaven and we or should i say, i would settle for a little dog since my plans are to live in an apartment or townhouse. But dogs are my weakness! We left the dog Dillan in CT. I had a dream that my dogs had died and i ended up with Dillan anyway. Go figure. But if any of u want a shitzu and are willing to pay for transit, here is your oppty. He is fixed, has all his shots and a 1 year healthcare policy all paid for from Petsmart. He is a cutie. However, i guess she and i want a promise with hand on the bible that this dog will be treated well and loved.
I have heard that the ASPCA doesn’t give much of the actual donations to the animals or their care, but to the CEOs or other things, but not directly to animal care. I wish there was a way to know for sure. That would go far in diffusing these manipulativce ads.
If you do not know for sure then why take the negative position and propogate rumor?
You have no evidence to support your supposition. You just want to feel better about not supporting the ASPCA.
Hi Lynette. I understand your weakness. That’s why I have 6 rescue dogs with us right now. I’ll keep my ears open for anyone who might want to give the shitzu a good home.
Your sister-in-law should get in touch with the MeetUp.com shitzu group in her area. There’s bound to be members wanting the puppy, or they could help her with placement.
Give me your sister-in-law’s zip code and I will find that group’s link.
O6902. My sister in law is kind of shy because her English is broken
but i will do it for her.
I sent you a PM.
I absolutely LOATHE that commercial!! It is unnecessarily sad and disturbing. I either find something to do in another room or channel surf when it comes on. It has been on for almost 2 years too!!! Get a new campaign already.
Welcome to our club.
They have launched a new ad and it’s worse than the original one.
I wonder why there are so many painful ads to break our hearts to help abused animals and so few to help abused children. Working with them I have had mixed feelings about abortion, because child abuse is such a slow painful death and the hurt never completely goes away. Animals learn to trust quicker than humans and animals are removed from neglective or abusive homes much quicker than abused children with stronger guidelines and regulations for placement afterward than some in foster care. Disturbing………..Yes I Hate that commercial for many reasons !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, people tell me this same thing many times to which i respond that God gave us all different feelings for different things. Mine happen to be animals but specially dogs. That does not mean that if i see a child being abused i would not be there. IN A NY MINUTE! Helloooo! Fortunately i have not seen much of that around me or in my neighborhood. I have seen animal abuse though and if you want to see a mean Rican climb the fence… come to my hood.
I watched and listened to the ASPCA ad at first (now they have a new one…no longer “Arms of The Angels”) then also had/have to mute it. Tough enough to watch the video and, yes…I can turn the channel but either way there’s guilt! Guilt that with sixteen rescues of our own (dogs, birds, cats) I just can’t see a way to bring in more…much as my heart says “Do it!” Guilt, if I turn off, I’m playing ostrich despite the fact that I know, somehow, we need the awareness of what so many of us will perpetrate on such who cannot speak for themselves. Like others, if I pile any more guilt on myself I’ll be in a hair shirt and spending more time in self-flagelation than I do on our brood (and that’s considerable in and of itself!). I don’t know the answer…I wish I did. Get rid of the puppy mills for a start; spay and neuter and before one gets a pet really understand that a commitment is being made for the well-being and life of the puppy, kitten, chick, fluffy bunny………..
I love your “hair shirt” reference. My good friend Evelyn, recently adopted an Australian Cattle Dog, Annie, who’d been rescued from a puppy mill. If you want to see just how awful they are, go to my blog, bodaciousboomner.com and do a search for “Annie”. Go the one titled “She can’t believe she ate the whole thing”. They have a pix of her at the puppy mill. I think people who run puppy mills should be eviscerated. The penalties now are nothing more than a slap on the wrist.
If you are talking about the Sarah McGlaughlin ad, I am not able to watch it. I change the channel. We have a great dog and love him very much. I would love to bring home everyone of the dogs in the shelter, but I am just not able to do this. As far as charity goes, I already belong to an organisation whose sole purspoe is charity and it actually takes a lot our of my bank account. i really wish I could help the dogs and cats….can’t stand the idea that they will be put down….the dog I have now was scheduled for euthanasia and I saved him…great decdision and great dog. I really do wish I could do more.
You saved a life. Good for you. Welcome to the group of us who can’t watch that ad.

Yes indeed! I am a animal lover, however, my heart is for people first. We all make our choices and I’m glad for yours as well But don’t think they can jerk me!
I guess it’s good someone can watch it.
Sorry, misunderstood me, i didn’t watch it. I see enough ads all over the place. I GOOGLED CEO ASPCA SALARY AND GOT $112,775 AND FYI IF INTERESTED-
Environmental Group Salaries
The report below for 2001 was retrieved from the Google cache and posted here after it disappeared from the Animal People website. The original is now back online.
More from Animal People:
2004 Individual Compensation and Notes (December 2005). Some excerpts: John H. Adams, President, NRDC: $704,796 (whew!); Steven Sanderson, CEO Wildlife Conservation Society: $495,422; Mark Van Putten, President, National Wildlife Federation: $477,138; Steven McCormick, CEO, The Nature Conservancy: $399,788; John Flicker, President, National Audubon Society: $362,237; Peter Seligmann, CEO, Conservation International: $336,3353; Russell Mittermeier, Conservation International: $331,515; Kathyrn Fuller, President, WWF: $310,781. Even underlings do well, i.e., “The National Conservancy paid 1,025 salaries above $50,000, with nine above $200,000 and nine more over $150,000.”
Thanks for getting the info. I wonder what percentage of their donations goes to animal care vs.administration? It is interesting that the CEO of the ASPCA gets considerably less than others in the same position at other agencies.
It is hard to compare 2001 to today. They have all gone up by about 500%. While disturbing…it is in alignment with American values and trends in top leadership pay.
And what are we paying for…
The ASPCA’s funding priorities for 2010 include:
Before you get angry or motivated by what you see in a local shelter, remember the organization is also working legislatively, with enforcement, in health care, education, and protection.
The ASPCA is the LAST SOCIAL SAFETY NET. It is what is also known as the “commons.” It doesn’t just take money. Caring people like you can make a huge difference…
I don’t turn the ad off…but it does make me want to cry…which is the purpose. For those of us who do all we can there are still those who do little or nothing, but could. It must be effective because they keep running it. You have to pick the charities and causes that resonate with you and just forget the others. One person cannot do everything. Bless you for what you do.
Thanks AuntieM it’s not much, but it is all I can do. The few times a year when I buy a lotto ticket I always say aloud that if I hit, I’ll build a no-kill shelter and set up a freee spay/neuter clinic. I just wish it’s happen.
Exactly–It has been effective for them. Of course, they are preaching to the choir but not everyone who loves animals does very much beyond maybe owning one or two. So, they can feel less guilty by sending the suggested $19/month (more or less) to halpe the animals. Times are tough for everyone right now–including the nonprofit organizations. As a professional development director (currently unemployed) I understand their motivation. It is a painful but very effective ad (especially with Sarah’s great music). Sometimes, I tell myself that if the animals can suffer then I can manage to look and survive a commercial asking for help with the problem. At least the ad tells you there is something a regular person can do to make a difference to at least one precious animal.
Honestly, it has come to the point that I don’t want to watch tv or listen to the radio either. There is so much sadness and misery in the world that if I listen and see all of it, I just want to put my head in the oven. I do what I can to help and after that, it just makes me depressed. I switch off the channel rather than watch it because I have to be able to sleep at night instead of playing horrible images back in my head.
Hi Lin. I’ve also actually cut back on the amount of news I reading about in the new year for that very reason. I may be less well informed, but I can’t fix everything and I tended to drag all that around with me too. I’ve deleted some sites from my incoming mail that were constantly badgering for donations by sending horrible photos.
Oh my gosh, i thought it was just me! when the aspca “eyes of an angel” ad comes on i break down every time. I try to jump for the remote when i see or hear the ad comimg.
You’re cordially invited to our ever-growing club.
Thank’s !
I change the channel immediatly when that commercial comes on. I can not stand to look at all those sad little animal faces for the 4 minutes it takes to get through the commercial. From the respones I see here looks like a lot of people have the same feeling. I don’t think it’s a very effective ad if no one can watch it. Who would watch that over and over? Certainly no one who loves animals.
It’s heartbreaking and stays with me for a long time after I see it. Apparently though, it’s working at some level and that’s why they keep it on.
I just leave the room but I have 3 dogs and 3 cats, they al eat very well and are cared for as well as I am. the ad is just too much and they are trained dogs and cats who are in the ad, at least I hope so. It is a real tear jerky the 1st time but as I hear it again and again it just makes me feel guilty.
I’m assuming they get some really great donations from those who can endure it. I just don’t know how many people can. From what I’m hearing, the club that can’t is bigger than the club that can.
I too have to get away from the ads when they come on now. It’s heartbreaking – the music the faces. Very sad. But if it got people to help then I’m all for it. I hope it’s just a temporary campaign though but like the equally sad St. Jude’s ads they will probably stay with us for a long time. I tell myself that the Holocaust went on and on partly because the local townspeople didn’t want to think about it. If I feel strongly for those who suffer then I want to do SOMETHING! I want to stop leaving it to work itself out. Now – I have an automatic deduction (just a little bit) taken out of my checking account every month from ASCPA and also St. Jude’s.
St. Jude’s is my other favorite charity since they never turn a sick child away. When our son Brett had a stroke at the age of two, it almost bankrupted us.
Yes, I also have 2 rescue dogs and 2 rescue cats. Everytime I hear that song, I think of John, John, Kennedy and I can’t take it either. I’ve worked for a rescue for a year and had to quit finally at being so disgusted at the way people treat or don’t treat their animals.
I applaud you for being able to have worked with a rescue organization. I’ve never done that. However, I’ve worked with a couple of women who do less “formal” rescue. One friend of mine surrently has 19 dogs at her place awaiting forever homes. I’ve been able to find a home for 4 of hers so far. I took two dogs from my neighbor who was abusing them. It makes me kinda crazy.
Woof – no pun intended –I cannot abide those commercials — primarily because if folks would spay their animals or neuter or whatever there wouldn’t be strays and sicks and all the rest. I want to thank you for your honesty — at last — someone being sensible about what is animal and what is human!! Our children need our donations – they will grow up and lead the country -(we hope) with a greater degree of dignity than we are doing!!! I would never never never hurt an animal and and had the horses, dogs, cats (13 at one time) gerbils, turtles, snakes, etc. when the kids were little because I felt they needed to have the responsibility of caring etc. – tho most of it did fall on me. We did the vet thing, the walking/grooming thing, the training thing and thank God – at the time we were not possessed with the right clothes, the right schools, the right ‘organic food’ etc. If we spent the 10 billion a year on illiteracy, poverty in our own country, health and education, that we spend on the animal frills we would be able to hold our heads high and just possibly show others that we know how to take care of our own — and maybe they would take care of their own. I don’t care about the blue toed, red crested booby who can’t control his algae either. Rock on girl!!!

In the Houston area there is low cost, or if you’re fiancially challenged no-cost, spay and neutering available. Why more people don’t take advantage of it I do not know. All you have to do is a little research to find out where to go.
I signed up for a monthly donation because of that ad. I have 4 dogs myself and that commercial just tears at me. I admit I have to turn it down. They have a new one with Willie Nelson singing. I love animals and think we need to do all we can to stop the abuse and neglect, but that commercial just makes me so sad. I guess it has made its point. We all know that ad personally.
I guess that it did exactly what it aimed to do since you signed up. Everybody I know knows that ad. And it affects the men I know the same way.

We record the shows we want to watch on DVR and FF through the commercials. That one absolutely kills me and my family. We can’t even FF fast enough it seems. I love Sarah McClachn and I know she loves & helps animals. But I am upset at her lending her song to this commercial that is too upsetting for anyone to watch! We don’t need our emotions raped and insulted to care about anmials! Please appeal to us in an intelligent and kinder way!
Emotional rape, a good way to put it.
My initial response to the ASPCA ad was a donation. After that, I walk out of the room or change the channel.
Hi Stacey. Now I know a few people who’ve donated because of that ad. However, I know a lot more who get upset and immediately get away from it.
I thought I was being such a wimp, turning the sound down, covering my eyes, making friends turn the channel. It is horrible, I completely agree.
Don’t worry. You’re in good company.
