Are you obsessed with thinness?

Do her arms look good to you?

According to the a study quoted on the Today show this morning, marriage makes you fat. Hoda Kotb said that single women gain average of 11 lbs. over 10 years. If you’re married, you gain double that- 22 lbs! Now, if that were just 22 lb. for every 10 years and I’ve been married 27 years…well, that would explain a lot. However, I don’t think it really works that way.

Piers Morgan, a judge from America’s got Talent, was a guest co-host on the show today. He said he didn’t understand why women are so obsessed with being skinny. He speculated that woman want to be so thin for other women; that men really didn’t want them that thin. Piers said he personally preferred women who weren’t so thin. Interesting. One of the perks about getting older that I’ve heard is that doctors say you should have a “few” extra lbs. as you age. (I think they say it’s helps prevent osteoporosis.) Or perhaps, you’re just better padded if you happen to stumble and fall. Either way, I’m safe. I could probably fall from the moon and just bounce.

I’m working on eating healthy again. However, I know I’ll never have to worry about getting “too thin”. Oh well, at least my bones are safe I guess. Are you obsessed with getting or staying thin? Or are you one of the lucky few who are just blessed with a fast metabolism and a massive amount of self-control?

In my young adult-hood and up until my mid 40′s, I was very slender.  I am 5’8″ and i weighted 130 lbs.  I had a baby at age 45 and since then, I weight 150.  I can’t stand it.  I feel so big.  And my brain says I’m not but I guess i’m more obsessed about it than I thought.  I am watching my diet but i get very little exercise excpt running around with my 5 y/o.  When I look back at pictures of myself, I really was too thin, but i thought that I was perfect.  Our culture is pretty f***ed up when you think it is normal to look like a skeleton.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. When I met Doug my body was pretty much perfect except for a little cellulite on my thighs. However, I still wanted to lose more. When I look back at the photos now I see that around my collarbone I was actually starting to look emaciated. I think the whole body image issue in this country has gotten out of whack. Lucky for me, my blood work looks good even though I need to lose a considerable amount of weight. Now, I’m just going to the gym to make my heart stronger and hopefully stave off “old ladyitis”- the bent forward, frailness of old age.

Hello Ladies, Who started this being so thin thing anyway?!Males in the culture and the training we have gotten from being programed from birth. Models, movies stars and the like. Check history, you will see if you had no weight/body heft you were poor and underfed. Now, not for nothing, why are you trying to be something that your creator did not make you, meaning one size fits all! Flowers comes indifferent shapes and size, so do animals, fish, birds, ect. How I am not speaking of unhealthy. I am 6 ft tall, wear 18-20 clothes size, exercise and feel good about me. I take care of my looks and dress well. To me whats not to like. It is interesting that males (by the way don’t carry babies in their bellies or go though menopause) have pot bellies, mid-age spread, breast! Yet males feel they have the right to tell you, you are fat, lose weight, they are not attracted to you any more, yet, and you settle for what they look like!? duh! The male who dates me is lucky, IMO. P.S. I work with a woman who as a size 4, always about not putting on weight, at 48 years old, died of a massive heart attack, go figure

It’s definately not the thinness I obsess over, but surely my health.  I find I have less energy and simply not feel as good.  Losing a few pounds always gives me back the lift I need.

That’s pretty much where I am now. Although my lab numbers from the doctor say I’m good, I know I’ll feel better lighter. You’ve got the right outlook I think.

when i was little i was “too thin”.  My mother worried that i will not make it through puberty.  She fed me all kinds of vitamins and potions.  Guess what?  The potions started working after i had a child.  Now i am too fat.  20 lbs. overweight and i do not seem to get it off.  I do not like to eat meat.  Most diets say if you want to lose weight skip the carbs and do meat / fish/ chicken and salad.  I can do that one day but then i gag.  Any vegetarians out there that can help me with a sane vegetarian diet that will help me lose weight?  I feel guilty eating animals plus my instint is telling me is not a good thing for your health anyway.  HELP!  Maybe i should do a complete separate post about this.

Hi Lynette. I’m not a vegetarian. Big salads are the basis of it for me- really big salads. Are you trying to be a vegan? I think that can be hard. Our daughter has been a vegetarian for 5 years. She tried being a vegan for about 6 months, but it was too diffficult. I’m curious, do you use TVP and seitan? I tried to do Atkins about two years ago. (After two weeks I would’ve killed for an orange). I just try to limit meat and supplement with other proteins when I can. Also, there’s a good site you should check out- Sparkpeople.com. It’s free and their is a TON of information and support there. I’m guessing they even have a group for vegetarians. Good luck.
