Boomer Women Upset at 40-Somethings?

Rita Wilson

Boomer women are said to be angry at a certain website (not this one!) for launching a segment that will target “Boomers over 40.” The new site will be edited by actress Rita Wilson.

Why is this a problem?

Because Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, are by their very definition not as young as 40. The youngest Boomer is 47. Thus the new site is seen as an attempt to lump younger people in with Boomers in order to attract that hallowed advertising dollar. Some feel this devalues us Boomers. Some feel Boomers have issues that are so entirely unique from that of people in their forties that we need to fight about it.

While this development is titillating and sensational, I have a different take on it.

Women in their 40s need us.

At 40, humans begin wrestling with some pretty heavy existentialist fears. Wouldn’t they appreciate learning about how to cope, before those fears come true?

I’m tired of the turf wars.

Artificial divisions may get eyeball, but in the long run it’s dispiriting. Yes, I’m sad that advertisers, movie producers, publishers etc. feel the only dollar worth chasing is that of younger people. But if people over forty can come together with us older people to gain knowledge, confidence and support for the years ahead, I would love that! I feel that our mission as early travelers is to send back missives from the front, to hold our lantern high and cast a light.

Are Boomers uniquely different from women in their early forties? What do you think?

Boomers are Boomers.  The youngest were born in a certain year.  If that year puts them into “our” category, fine.  If not, they are not Boomers.  They may need us – after all, we’ve been there and done that – but they are not us.  Maybe advertisers should learn to be “inclusive” without labels. ♥

If someone out there is mad and angry over one webiste redefining boomers for their own purposes here’s what i think:   Maybe they should get a life and a real problem.  Because they are manufacturing drama for no real purpose or value.
