My First Big Editing Job

I can’t help being a little excited.

Terry Burns is having several of his stories and books published through Port Yonder Press, and I get to be one of the editors for him.

Believe me, I’m so excited, I’m fanning my face with splayed fingers, because this Writer’s Guide, due out next month, is my first edit for a major author! But before you start spreading the kudos on too thick (if you had any thought of spreading kudos at all), please know that I’m not the only editor who worked on Terry’s masterpiece. PYP is swimming with talent, and we all work together to put out the best product possible.

Okay, that said, I’m still giddy.

Since PYP is so new, the idea of launching books from such multi-pubbed names as Terry Burns, Eddie Jones, Max Elliot Anderson and Liz Rhodebeck is a big deal–as is the fact that ACFW added us to their list of approved publishers. Keep in mind that small publishers are a viable alternative to the overworked giants. Just recently, Marcher Lord Press produced a Christy winner (By Darkness Hid, by Jill Williamson), and Max Elliot Anderson’s Lost Island Smugglers (a PYP publication) is being studied for a motion picture.

PYP and similar publishers are a terrific launching point for new authors because we are traditional presses–not vanity presses. You still have to submit your work, still risk rejection, still have to submit to edits. And, once you’ve published with PYP, you are still responsible for quite a bit of your marketing, just as you are with larger houses. As you gain experience working this game, you can build up quite a portfolio, enhance your profile and move on to the big dogs. Or just stay with the up and comers, like us!

About the book: Terry is a writer, an agent with Hartline Literary, and speaker at many writer conferences. This book is derived from on-line and conference courses he has presented, and it covers absolutely everything about getting published, from getting over your shyness so you can engage in a face-to-face pitch to writing a killer marketing plan and platform. This book should be on the shelf of every writer daydreaming of publication. And I was one of the lucky few who got to work on it.
Yes, I’m excited. I’m tooting my own horn. There’s something to be said for the “first” of anything, because too soon whatever it is becomes old hat. So indulge me while I cartwheel across the living room . . .

Well, congratulations!  HOW exciting for you!  I’ve written my memoir:  Ghost Child to Triumph (from a child with no voice, to someone who speaks up against injustice).  My endorsements: Elie Wiesel, Wayne Dyer, Nikki Giovanni, Drs. Ellen langer, Alice Miller, Clint van Zandt, etc., etc……..I do need editing…..What do you charge?

My poetry, Sanctuary of the Soul (www.soulpoetry.org) was just published.

    Congratulations, once again!  Regards, Alicia

Congrats Linda!  Hope you’re not dizzy from the cartwheels!!  The book looks fascinating and I know you will do a great editing job.  Can you post again when the book is out and ready to be ordered?  I’d be interested!

Again, kudos to you (“thick” ones, too!).

Dizzy, and I’ve kinda made a mess of the place!

I’m doing the final edits now, and we’re hoping to get it out late next month or early September. I’ll be glad to let you know when it comes.

Your happy excitement is contagious Linda – I’m sitting here grinning like an idiot over your cartwheels. Congratulations to both you and your new publishing company. Success and recognition are such great things, especially when people have worked so hard to deserve them!

Now please go do just a couple more cartwheels if your brain can handle it. :-)
