South Dakota? Hello, anyone out there knowledgeable about South Dakota…or better yet actually live(d) there? I am trying to taking advantage of an “adventurous opportunity.” An old friend, British gentleman type, will have traveled to all 50 states –South Dakota and North Dakota being the last 2! Dates are June 20 – June 21. Where to stay? Where to fly in? My airlines doesn’t fly anywhere near there–American Airlines.We will be crossing over to North Dakota via route US 85. Thanks for any ideas, tips, etc.Trudemarie

one mid-afternoon in July, some 21 years ago, i popped a vacation idea to my husband, “can we go see Mt. Rushmore?” not really to my surprise, because hubby has always been genial, but, considering this would involve a road trip of thousands of miles, it did surprise me when he didn’t even hesitate answering, “Sure, when do you want to go?”

Two weeks later, we piled our two children, ages 3 and 9, his mom and my sister into my father’s custom van and traveled upward, onward and back downward for the best vacation we ever experienced as a family! yep, it was better than going to the beach! South Dakota offered landscapes we had never seen before with the Badlands (we have never neen to the Grand Canyon), the Black Hills, The Needles, Custer State Park, the roaming buffalo, the begging burros, the bears, the Native Americans and Mount Rushmore.
;
Mount Rushmore was glorious; everyone should see it at least one time in their life…
;
i could go on and on about the breathtaking beauty of the Badlands; Custer State Park was an educational visual into the history of early American life; it was as if all the scenes from every western movie i had enjoyed as a little girl, had been ‘recreated’ just for me…in fact, i can say that even with the commercialization of tourists spots, the entire experience was personal for each of us that week; every natural and historic snippet impressed us accordingly with our range of ages…to this day we all talk about that wondrous trip to Mount Rushmore…..well, our son can only remember missing his bed, but still, it left him a happy kid and that may be the best memory one can hope for…

we spent only one night in the state; we were on a tight schedule as we made our way along the Oregon Trail back towards home; but we stayed in, Rapid City, is still recalled as a charming, simple and well-kept city. It is right outside of Keystone, where Mt. Rushmore is found. of course it has been 20 years and things change, but Rapid City was lovely at the time and i imagine it still is…

while, we enjoyed South Dakota as a family, i believe a British gentleman and a lady from America will find this state offers thought-provoking beauty, reflective insight into the circle of Amercian life and…best of all, when the begging burros block the road and stick their giant burro heads into the window of your car, of course, begging for ‘people food’, you will feel like kids again…

ingredients that make for a refreshing and, perhaps, romantic escape…

oh…and the temperature at the time we went was high 90′s, low 100′s daily, no rain, no humidity…coming from the Ohio Valley it was actually pleasnt for us!
