Sea sickness

I’m going on my first cruise. While I am used to being on the typical small pleasure boats, I want to be prepared for the possibility of sea-sickness on the cruise. I have been sea sick once, as a child, and it was horrible. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You can buy the bracelets to wear to prevent seasickness at most pharmacies.  Just talk to the pharmacist.  Not sure about the patch that goes behind the ear, if that is available OTC, but I know it worked for surgery I had for nausea.

Dramamine or Bonine? are OTC . I get seasick on small boats so I am all about prevention. I went on an inland Alaskan cruise and did fine.

I sailed on smallish sailboats for years and been on cruises. Fortunately, I’ve never once gotten sick, even when others were throwing up right in front of me.
Oddly, I DO get violently car sick, so I know how terrible it can make you feel.
    Here’s my 4 best suggestions:
    1. Always keep some, but not a lot, of food in your stomach. Crackers work wonders for me, and you can even bring some w/ you to have them close at hand to nibble on right at the very, very beginning of feeling ill. Do NOT delay because once the feeling gets started, it’s hard to reverse it!
    2. Find a way to make yourself burp. For me, it was taking a big gulp of a carbonated beverage and I liked to have fizzy water on hand. Once I let ‘er rip (hopefully in privacy, but don’t squelch the truly biggest belch you can muster), I would feel (and you will feel) instantly better.
    3.  Avoid the temptation to eat yourself to death. It’s not an easy objective, but do NOT allow yourself to eat until you’re overly full. A lot of small meals throughout the day will serve you well, and don’t be afraid to squirrel away some snacks from the buffet so that you always have that bit of food in your stomach. Isn’t it more fun to enjoy your cruise experience rather than to sample every, single offering from the buffet bar? Yeah, I thought so!
    4. Finally, spend lots and lots of time on deck enjoying the views (focus on the horizon if you’re queasy) and smiling into the sun and breeze while meeting new friends. There’s nothing like life at sea!
    Enjoy your cruise!!

I have lived and cruised on a motor yacht for the last 5 years, and dealt with seasickness a lot in open ocean cruising…none of the above tips ever worked for me (nothing personal to any of you). Go to the grocery or natural foods store and get yourself some candied ginger, the real stuff, not ginger snaps or ginger flavored gum etc… and at the first hint of trouble, or even before, eat a few nibbles of it.  Aslo, make sure you have some food in your stomach first.  taking Bonine a couple hours before you get on the boat can also be helpful, just be prepared to be drowsy sometime within the next few hours. If Fran has never been sea sick, how does she know how to remedy it?  Haven’t tried the other homeopathic remedies mentioned, but I would have them on hand, just to be on the safe side, cuz seasickness will ruin your cruise.  Good luck!

Big boats are not the same as small boats. The movement is not so noticable.  So hopefully you won’t have any problems.

What is making you sick is your eyes are seeing things going up and down and that can make people quesy. Focusing on the horizon is a way to settle your stomach since it does not go up and down as much as things close to you.  So get out of deck and stare into the distance and relax and tell yourself that you are not going to be sick.

Also you can try hypnotism since how you deal with it is basically about mind control.  You are not actually sick so there is no need to be sick …
