Packing everything into one carry-on – can it really be done? Hot Conversation

Luggage, packing, security checks, dragging around the bags – it can all be exhausting. Here’s a site that advises how to pack everything into one carry-on: http://www.onebag.com/. Has anyone done this successfully?

Yes it is possible! I went to Spain for ten days and had everything I needed in one carry on suitcase.

I can’t believe there is a website to explain this!  My biggest tip is to pick one color, either black-tone or brown-tone, and go with it.  Second, is to find one pair of shoes that works with everything, so you don’t have to pack shoes.  Third, find a nicer/dressy pair of jeans that you love – you can wear them with almost anything/anywhere/many times!

Exactly…I went with just about everything black. One good pair of walking shoes, one pair of dressier shoes. We were lucky, stayed in a condo with a washer/dryer.

my son is an avid traveler……..and he uses a take on bag….he showed me one time..he rolls everything up. places smaller things inside the shoes…when i was in sales, and gone for 4 days a week, i picked two color combinations, that would match, and never had a problem…….

Yes you can.  I can do a three-day weekend in a backpack that includes my computer and cosmetics.  Just traveled a bit with brother and s-i-l, and they took three cases for three days, plus items on hangers.  I took the backpack.  Had just what I needed.  S-i-l could not believe I could look good out of that minimal space.

First start with a color theme (mine is typically beige and black); then determine what your activities will be and plan accordingly; then roll like items or outfits together and there you are, traveling light!

One motto I also travel with:  I’m not going to a Third World Country, so there will be stores at my destination.

Lynn, your comment cracked me up.  I went to L.A. for five days and brought the biggest suitcase we had!  You just never know what you’ll need.

My husband is a road warrior and has taught me well. Clothing is rolled, compact sundries and equipment, check the weather forecast before you go, and go easy on the shoes. Lay out all clothing you think you will need, then put half of it away.  I have friends who just went to Thailand for a month using carry-on only. Easier in warmer climates.

I was never a one suitcase carry on girl…until they started charging for bags.  Somehow I’ve found the impetus to take less.  It really can work.  If I can change taking too much, anyone can!  (my husband still thinks I take too much…)

Absolutely! I have traveled to Europe on 2 week watercolor workshops taking carry on that included art gear.
It is a mix and match formula. You pack 3 bottoms;pants and/or skirts or that ago with 3 tops and if you include the outfit worn traveling, that makes 16 possible wardrobe changes. Add a couple of scarves and pieces of inexpensive jewelry and you are good.

When we go to Europe it’s usually for 3 weeks at a time since airfare is so pricey.  I could possibly pack the clothing I need in a carry on.  Then I remember, the trip to Ireland- I had to buy winter gear it was so cold, the trip to Paris  I had to buy summer clothes it turned so hot. The trip to Italy, everyone wanted me to bring back Italian leather and glass.  Oh, and then there’s 3 weeks worth of medication and insulin.  NO WAY could I do this with just a carry on.

The luggage fees got to me too.  So, when I returned from that trip I bought a new expensive carry on size bag.  I took every item out of the large bag I had been using and separated them into two categories.  One was the things I actually used on the trip and needed.  The second category was everything else.  Then I packed everything I actually had used/needed in the new small bag to see if they would fit.  To my amazement they did.  I have been using the carry on ever since.  I feel invincible, free and strong.  (One of the ideas that fuels my workouts is to be sure I can easily hoist that bag into the overhead with out asking for anyone’s help.  I love that feeling!)
I actually have room to leave my clothes on their hangers which I divide into 2 groups; long stuff like pants and short stuff like shirts, which I then simply fold/roll around the hangers into a packets which I then place in the bag.
When I arrive all I have to do is unroll the packets and hang up the hangers!  Too too easy.  Takes me maybe 5 min to unpack.
And, the best part of all of this is having so much less stuff to deal with;  I feel liberated.
To remember exactly what to take, I actually wrote it all out, down to the last pair of earrings.  Takes all the guess work and fussing out of packing which I can now do in probably one-fifth of the time it used to take.
I love, love, love traveling light!!!
    Best to you all,
