My husband and I would like to take a trip there and I would like to know if anyone has a favorite place to stay? Or any suggestions about what you enjoyed in the town. Thanks.

Hi,
Yes, I went one Thanksgiving. It is pretty much out in the middle of nowhere, but once you get there it is a whole universe upon itself. Cobblestone streets (don’t take your heels), quaint shops, interesting restaurants and some places with live music. It really only takes a few days to do everything. The stopover in Mexico city is pretty exciting with really fun things like a vibrant art scene, historical places, old art nouveau and deco coffee houses. Have fun if you go.
The most beautiful place to stay in San Miguel is the Casa Sierra Nevada….wow! It is in the central part of the city, and they have a ranchero outside the town, where you can go riding and have a picnic set up for you. We ate breakfast on the square every morning to watch the goings on, and congregated with all the “expats” to pick up English speaking newspapers at the shoe shine stand in the mornings! We sat on the square and watched people coming and going in the evenings after dinners! The art galleries are wonderful! Great food!
Being an artist it was the perfect place for my daughter and I… You want to paint everything. Enjoyed the culture, the food and the art which is everywhere. The cobblestone streets are hard the feet and ankles so take lots of comfortable shoes. Casa de Reyna is a b & b which provides breakfast and lunch in the daily rate reynasuarez@yahoo.com. It was quiet and it is owned by a woman who lives there alone. She was very accommodating.
There is tour every Sunday of the local expats homes. It starts at the library and you get the feel for how they have adjusted to a new culture. We spent a lot of time at the Fabrica La Aurora art and design center as we worked with a local artist.
I took myself on a culinary trip there this past February. It was a perfect way to get to know the city casually. There were several trips 2 hour out of town which I also enjoyed and are described in the link below. The recommended hotel was also fine and inexpensive right down the street from a Starbucks of all things. I was actually glad it was there. The market and the churches were all interesting to see of course and there are some good restaurants as well.
The only downside to going was that it was a long trip. I had a two leg flight from NH to Charlotte and then to Mexico City. I think I would have liked to have spent some time in Mexico City too but as it was I hopped on a bus from the airport for a trip that took several hours. There was also a bus change in there as well!
But once you get there it’s great. I loved the cool temps. If you want to know more, i’d be happy to go back and look at my notes concerning restaurants, etc.

Hello – I happened to see your inquiry on the e notice and had to take a look. San Miguel is a favorite of mine and there are so many great places to stay and things to do. It’s easy to find out what is going on by picking up guides in the hotels and buying the weekly paper. In case you are interested in renting a house. My brother has one for rent in San Miguel on the southeast end of the Centro. It is about 6 blocks from the Jardin. You can view on you tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x_QmASx198 Let me know if you are interested. I am going to be in San Miguel the end of November. Gail
Hi again- I think the best way to check out the hotels is using TripAdvisor — here is the link
http://www.tripadvisor.com/HACSearch?geo=151932&q=San+Miguel+de+Allende%2C+Mexico&inDay=30&inMonth=10%2F2009&checkIn=mm%2Fdd%2Fyyyy&outDay=1&outMonth=11%2F2009&checkOut=mm%2Fdd%2Fyyyy&searchAll=true&adults=2
Maybe easier just to do a search with tripadvisor and SMA. Gail
My husband and I have a house in SMA where we stay when here (here now) and rent when in the states. With regards to accomodations, I would suggest Casa de la Cuesta. It’s a fabulous bed and breakfast up the hill from Centro (walking distance) in a Mexican neighborhood. The owners, Bill and Heidi Levasseur, are Americans who lived in Mexico City for many years. Along with this beautiful b&b, Bill has an incredible mask museum adjacent to the b&b, and Heidi reps about 6 of the better artisans in Mexico. Bill and Heidi can give you any information you need about the area, and they serve a great breakfast. Another place on flat ground in Centro is Oasis. It’s fairly new, I’ve heard is very nice and has a great view. There are many nice places. Casa Sierra Nevada gets much of the press, but I think there are many more interesting places to stay. Buen viaje!
Thanks so much to all of you who have responded. I was out of town and away from my computer for awhile and hadn’t checked this posting. There’s a lot of really helpful info and I will go through it all again. Hoping to make it down there sometime next year. We live in the San Francisco bay area and it looks like it isn’t easy to get there, but worth the hassle.
Thanks again to all of you.
