Tips for navigating the New Vibrant Nation Hot Conversation

  1. How do I log in?
    • Use your email address to log in.
    • If necessary, click on the “forgot password?” link to create a new password.
    • If you continue to have trouble logging in, please email info@vibrantnation.com for assistance.
  2. Where can I see all new posts on VN?
  3. VN’s “Read All Posts” page is currently under construction. In the meantime, click on a particular topic that interests you to see new posts in that category. [Edit: The All Posts list is now live. ~ Eds.]

  4. How do I create a post?
    • Click on a topic tab to select a topic for your post.
    • Use the yellow box to post as usual.
    • Your new post will appear under that specific topic tab.
  5. Where are all my posts?
    • Click on the “My Account” tab at the top of the page.
    • Then click on “My Public Profile.”
    • Your Profile page is similar to what used to be your MyVN page. It shows your bio, VN interview, role models, and currently lists all conversations you’ve started. It will soon be updated to include any conversations you’ve commented to, so it will be easier to find them, as well.

  6. How do I update my account information?
  7. Click on the My Account tab to view and edit your email address, VN member name, photo, password, and newsletter subscriptions.

  8. I liked getting to know other members via their “MyVN” pages. How can I find a member’s MyVN now?
  9. To see another members’ posts on VN, simply click on that person’s green member name when you see it on the site. This will take you to her Profile page, which lists her bio and all her posts.

  10. Will I still get email notifications about posts I’m following?
  11. The new email notifications will appear slightly different, but you will still be able to click and go directly to a post to see what’s new.

Thank you, Beth. I know I’m trying to be patient (actually, I am a rather patient person, anyway) and you’ve listed some of the features I’m already missing as being on their way. I still may not like it, but it’s not my decision to make.

I am assuming that editing our posts and responses will also be forthcoming? How about the “Love” feature (or “Report,” even though I’m not likely to use it)? How about bold and italics and the ability to include a link? Spellcheck?

Thank you for trying to be patient with us, as well. I’m assuming you’re in a tough spot and probably didn’t make (let’s see if the HTML works for me…) the decision to change your site, but are in a position to need to defend it. ♥

Hi TL. You’re welcome. I’m glad some features you’d like are already in the works.

Here’s the most up-to-date answers I have regarding those features:

Editing posts – I’m not sure if that’s on the way. I’ll have to ask and see how much resource/time that requires.

Love – That’s probably not coming back. That feature was custom built for our old platform. Again, it will be a question of time/resources.

Report – that’s likely to come back in a new form at some point, depending on need.

You can definitely use a bit of HTML to make things bold, ital, and to link, although there may be an improvement that would bring back the buttons in the future.

Spellcheck? Same answer – not sure on that one. Although, one tip I have: My browser automatically works as a spellcheck. I use Firefox.

Thank you for your patience. While I was not ultimately the one who made the decision, as I’m not the owner, I fully support it. I have complete confidence that there will be features about this new platform that you’ll come to love, and that while you may find it confusing right now, it will soon become a familiar friend.

Yes, I noticed my italics worked; I don’t know how to do links, but will look it up. BTW, I use Firefox as well and it does spellcheck while I’m writing. Thanks, Beth. ♥

Hi Beth, thanks for the info… I’m lately not much of a patient person but I will try!! I have to say however, I am still disgruntled at the chopping down of the size of the conversation window. I feel even more bombarded by all the ads, and doesn’t feel as friendly. Its no longer as enjoyable to be on here…
I am wondering how hard it can be to put in place a ‘like’ or ‘love’ button?? maybe not the heart, but surely they can do something.. (dare I say it– if facebook can do it….!!)

    thanks again…

Well, we have one developer and facebook has… let’s just say more than that! ;-) We do think that’s a feature we’ll be able to add back, but I’m not making any promises!

First login in several weeks… I have to say, this is truly one of the worst website redesigns I’ve seen in years. It’s difficult to navigate, the layout is so poorly thought through as to be almost unusable (especially on a netbook or tablet), and you’ve moved from a strong branding with your colors to a much weaker one with the hideous pale pink.

What on earth were you thinking? I can certainly understand the desire to add or improve functionality, but those things can be accomplished “behind the covers,” without creating chaos for the user. I’ve had this experience with Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and several other companies who let their “usability experts” make decisions without input from actual users, and the results are uniformly awful.

Just like this is. You’ve definitely lowered the odds that I’ll be increasing the frequency or duration of my visits, and as for participation, well, let’s just say that after spending 5 more minutes than I wanted to without being able to find the “contact webmaster” link, I decided to leave my feedback here.

Good luck. Vibrant Nation’s going to need it.

Are Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft making money? Because that’s what we’re trying to do! ;-) Honestly, we are trying to balance a lot of goals, but making enough money to keep this place we’ve created going for you is at the top of the list. Small changes “behind the covers” just weren’t going to do what we needed done.

I’m sorry you don’t like the design. However, I’d like to point out that there is a contact us link at the bottom of every page, as well as an email address in the post you’re commenting to.

Thanks for the good luck wishes.

Sorry, I have to go with mlbrowne on this one. Too bad I can’t just click on the love button anymore. I fully appreciate that the web site is not available because you have an altruistic need to cater to over 50′s women. And I don’t mind paying back through click thru and buying reasonably priced items. But in order to keep up ad revenue, you need to supply viable content, functionality, and a surfer-friendly environment for potential customers to frequent a site. It’s a balancing act and I believe you have finally tipped over.
One major problem is that with too many ads, taking up the majority of the page space, you diminish the main draw – interaction between like-aged women. Reading and responding to posts and blogs, and navigating the site, has become a chore, The space to read and type content is so small, and the ads so distracting, it’s hard to concentrate. There are so many ads, one is not drawn to read them because the pages are too noisy – you can’t see the forest for all the trees.
Also, you say you want to make money. But your guides, some of which I would like to order, are way overpriced. Almost half the cost of a book is retailing (exclusive of marketing). So if you were to print and sell a $30 guide through brick and mortar, you’d be talking about a $50 – $60 item. Seriously, who would pay that? If you make your guide prices commensurate with electronic delivery costs and profit, you’d sell more of them.

Watru – if there was still a ♥ button, you’d have it! I agree and the only reason I get to ignore the ads is because – with my eyes – I use the Ctrl + to “blow up” the page so I can see and thereby pretty much only see the center column.

I also am missing the “replied to who” thing. Some of the conversations were hard enough to follow. On the other hand, I’m not seeing anyone following anything very much now.

It’s ironic – I’m not technically challenged nor am I one of those who just hates change – but this, after trying for 3 days, at least 3 times each day, is way overboard. I should probably add IMHO… ♥

the rss was given the option to put onto the google homepage. One small improvement for VNkind. Now, if I didn’t have to spend waaaay to much time trying to find threads and conversations. If the idea is to get more trafffc on the site, I think the designers have failed beyond their wildest expectations.

Thanks for sharing the navigation tips and what might be in the works for future releases. Definitely a different look and feel but with time …. it will be as familiar as the old. I do completely understand the need to make changes as a business necessity~! We should all remember we don’t pay to be here, but we are here gratis and part of that involves being solicited to~! I know its a balancing act to find the right “sweet spot” of attracting a volume of website traffic that is attract to advertisers while not overloading the advertising to the point of turning off the visitors. I hope you guys at VN find that balance~!!! Would hate to lose you~!!!!!

However DL, you can’t make money if your target audience doesn’t like the site. VN could have taken advice from organizational change literature and made their lives easier. They could have said up front what their goals were and we could have helped. I mean, who knows the target audience better than the audience themselves? Plus, it would have had the added benefit of buy in up front. Just sayin……….

@ Olga. Precisely. And I tried it for a few days and don’t bloody much like it. Way too annoying for my taste. I’m out of here for now. Will check back from time to time to see if improvements are made. It’s been a pleasure chatting with you and most everyone else.

I have finally figured out and used the RSS/bookmark thing. It works. Hopefully I’ll adapt and, even more hopefully, we’ll get a spot to see all the new posts. Right now I’m still searching through each category, although I’m sure the RSS would work there as well.

I posted with a problem under Family/Relationships; if anyone can find it… help! ♥

Beth, I am not understanding the “LIKES”.  How do I add a LIKE to someone’s post.  As you know, I’m new at this.

      Thanks so much.

Click on the hand wherever it is, line the cursor up with “like” and click.  Generally, I think, if there is no reply to post, just reply it is pretty much the same.

Thank you, Darcy09. I apologize, Bonnie. I didn’t see your comment until today. You should be able to click on either the Heart or the word Like to “like” a post. If you have already liked a post, nothing will happen when you click. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
