Being computer savvy in a divorcing a control freak.

Oh Ladies

Well if you haven’t been educated in computers up until now….This is your perfect time to GET that way. I have a son who works as a computer IP and he is my go to guy for computer problems. BUT the problem is that he lives ½ the country away from me.  The solution to our problem is called ‘remote accesses’. It is a program that allows him to connect with my computer from any place in the world, WHEN he is not working on my computer I can turn it off so there is no chance for anyone else access.

If your EX’s are computer savvy they might know about these programs and have already installed one on your computer before leaving…or even been using it while you were still together to ‘spy’. Take the time to go through your computer programs and see if you can find anything that might ‘Shout or even whisper’ remote success. Then if you are still unsure if it is, call a computer shop and ask them what those suspect programs are. They should tell you over the phone. Some might even give you a complete list of the ones used out in the market. They can also tell you how to delete them if you don’t know how. Wouldn’t it be awesome to know that your Ex woke up one morning thinking he was going to check your e-mail and found he NO LONGER had the ability to do so.

The name of the ones I know about are ‘logmein’, ‘Access Remote PC’, ‘gotomypc’,  ‘radmin’, ‘remote desktop control’ and I’m sure many many more. Google or bing ‘remote access computer programs’.

If you have to have a remote access to your computer so you can monitor something at home while you are at work, you need to think long and hard about your situation and if you want to take the chance or not. Or just learn how to turn them OFF when you are not using it.

Learn to be savvy yourselves. You all be good to you.

no need to get paranoid here.  in order for someone on remote access to access your computer you have to accept the call, put your own password in, before they can get access.   I use it all the time for my database company to update my program files.

Yep, what Catharine said regarding Remote Access. It comes with pre-loaded on computers with MS Windows, but no-one can access it unless you allow it. Like you, llacey, I always make sure I deactivate it just because I’ve never needed to use it.

If you do need to use it, though, it’s an amazing tool. Regarding other possible spy/hacker programs – yes, they do exist. Remote Access simply isn’t one of them.

Yes ladies I know there has to be a pass word…but IF he was the one that installed or set up the program HE will be the one who knows the pass word. If someone doesn’t realize this has been opened and left running then they would never guess.

Oh my….. a wife who possibly pays no attention to Remote Access and has never passworded it and a husband who does and can use it at his discretion….. I believe the security for RA isn’t as strong for the personal, non-business windows operations systems, so “Oh my – good point, llacey.

I keep a tiny post it note over my web cam when not in use so that no one can remotely watch me or my house or whatever space I am in, without my knowledge.

I turn off my computer when not in use- yes it is a pain, but it can prevent remote acces and hacking.

When I am not going to use the computer for HOURS I unplug it.  This prevents anyone from remotetly starting up my computer (usually reserved for hard core hackers, but more and more people seem to know how to do things with computers we mere mortals can’t)

I figure these steps should keep me safe not just from the online peepers and voyers, but also the identity thieves.
