I like this question. I tend to not worry about failing. I plunge right in…..going back to school at age 61, writing my memoir and poetry book, submitting my paper on verbal abuse to a journal and the ACA, taking money out of my retirement quite a few times to attend the American Counseling Association Convention in Hawaii and other places, fighting spiritual abuse in the church that voted me out of membership because I got a divorce and let the x live in my house…very long story which resulted in my website with 17,949 hits so far, getting a divorce after 31 years of abuse, always challenging myself and living on the edge…Performing my passion (ballet) at the University where I work; guess I never think about age…I still feel 18……constantly putting myself out there! My next challenge is my biology class…..never had a biology class, LOl, LOL

Mostly it is what would I do if I had a good credit rating and could actually get a loan to go back to school, or rrenew my real estate license etc., or if I had a retirement fund to take money out of…..money opens up a lot of options, I don’t have money…
Right…always comes down to money.
Too often though we say, “I can’t”, rather than “how can I?” We see only one avenue of getting where we want to go and when that avenue is blocked we throw up our hands and give up. It’s an impasse.
When you ask, “how can I?” you open up a world of possibilities. What is it I want to do and how many ways can I think of to get there? That’s where forums like this and groups of friends are so helpful. They can all think of things that we can’t or don’t know about.
So, how can you improve your credit rating? How can you get the knowledge you need without borrowing money? How can you renew your real estate license? How can you get more money into your life?
It doesn’t always come down to money. Sometimes it comes down to imagination and willingness to change your thinking.
I agree to this statement “how can I? It really gets the mind thinking. I have seen many just say “I can’t” and that’s it. How can I poses a puzzle to be solved. I like this post.
Here is a fun exercise: Sit down and list, as quickly as you can, twenty ways you can get what you want or need. It is important to do it quickly otherwise your inner critic will have time to come up with all kinds of reasons why it won’t work. Don’t edit as you go and do write down anything that comes to mind, no matter how outrageous or unfeasable it may seem. You will be surprised what comes up.
The most dangerous position you can take is to believe that changing your life is impossible. If you believe that, it becomes that. Believe that there is a way and you will find it.
Well, I have asked that…..at the age of 60 and working full time with an hour and a half commute every day, there is really not time for a second job…..sure, I could go back to school to study something that would make more money, but who is going to pay my bills in the meantime?? I could not get a loan if my life depended on it….I make jewelry and sell that at craft shows, but not exactly big bucks…the credit rating, destroyed by divorce, it will take 7 years to get all the ugly stuff off the rating…I have looked into this, it’s not like I have not tried….I am not just sitting around wailing…..renewing the real estate license $1,000…..I know of no one who has that money to lend me….there is no other way to get money into my life……I have been looking for a new job for 2 years….one interviewer told me he has 60 applications for every position they post…hey they keep hiring 29 year olds….
But I am open to concrete suggestions.
There are lots of ways to make more money that don’t require going back to school. Do you know that more people make more money in sales than in any other profession? You can start a low-cost-of-entry business with a network marketing company in many cases for less than $100. And you will have a built-in system for success and the help of people who want to see you succeed. I am not suggesting that this be your course of action, only that there are likely lots of oppotunities out there that you may not have considered.
Do you have a talent or skill you could share with others by way of lessons or instruction? At 60 you must have lots of experience that you could use to help others and be paid for it. Life is certainly not over at 60. My grandmother lived to be 99. If you should be so fortunate, that gives you another 39 years of living (or in my case 43 years). It can be wonderful or it can be miserable, but the decision is not up to the rest of the world. It’s up you each of us how it turns out. I don’t know about you, but there is still a heck of a lot of stuff I want to accomplish before it’s too late.
As for money – think about this: Do you have ten friends who would gift you with $100 each? Or 100 friends who would give you $10 each if you explained that you need their help to create a better life? To say “there is no other way to get money into my life” may just indicate that you haven’t thought of others ways, not that there are no other ways.
If you have an hour and half commute each day, what are you using that time for? You could borrow motivational materials from your library and listen for that long everyday. You could learn a language, become a financial expert, or become a speaker just by listening on your way to and from work.
As Henry Ford said, “If you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.” We can be pitiful or we can be powerful, but we can’t be both.
Stay open. You will find your way to the life you want.
Alicia,
Love your post! You are my kind of person. I love new adventures. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Biology is not so hard. You know you can do it!

You got yourself a new set of wings and are flying like a fearless eagle! You’re my idea of a fully alive and independent woman who is catching up on “stuff” she has never had a chance to do earlier in life. Thank you for the inspiration.
(((Anir, Ata)))): Thank you for your kind, lovely responses. I am working so HARD to make a difference; I just don’t have the quit/give up gene, LOL, LOL
Sometimes that never give up attitude doesn’t work, like when I stayed in an abusive “marriage” for 31 years……but i DID get out.
Absolutely! As “they” say :”Better late than never!” A few unfortunate wives don’t get out alive. I had a neighbor this has happened to – none of us knew what was happening to her…….
I would be doing what I am doing now. Running my practice of massge therapy, and going back to school to become a naturopathic dr. I also if I could find the time would be performing my poetry again, and get my poetry published. That is next on my list after school. I don’t believe in failure, you only fail when you quit.
My poetry is published and now i am doing everything I can, to market it….the title is Sanctuary of the Soul (it refers to my home state of Maine). I will continue going to school….I will be 90 when I get my Masters, but I will be that age anyway@
Visited your site. Liked the poetry. Are you on Facebook. Alot of my friends who have books are marketing there, also most of my artist friends are as well. Luck.
1) Finish my novel and submit it for publication.
2) Start a new business where I would not have to be onsite for it to be successful.
I am working on both 1 and 2. I recently submitted a short story…my first submission and I have three novels going…
For item 2, you might check out a site called changingcourse.com for some encouragement, ideas, and case histories/testimonials. It’s free.
Thank you….my husband and I were brainstorming after a day of kayaking and came up with a business idea and we are now working on a business plan to bring it to fruition. I will keep you posted as to progress and where to buy this exciting new product as soon as we are up and running. We expect to take at least a year. We are both registered nurses and have experienced some burn-out with the shift work and stress of the profession so we are excited about this!
Sounds like you are enthusiastic about this. Start a new post when you get the planning going.
