I used to believe that memoir was just a way of writing “all about me.” That it was at least somewhat vain or egocentric. That was before I began studing and writing memoir.
Now I understand how much more it can be. Memoir is a way of taking bits and pieces of life, often expressed in journals, lifestory vignettes, essays, maybe old letters, scrapbooks, whatever, and connecting those dots to form a clear story.
Story is the way we make sense of life. Writing our own comprehensive, detailed life story, in the integrated form of memoir, brings an unparalleled sense of closure and completion.
My spiritual journey has been long and tortuous at times. I like where I am now, and writing a memoir of the journey is my gift to myself of understanding better how I got here. I may share it with my family, or friends. I may set it aside. I may publish it. That decision remains in the future. For now, I write. I write because I am.
