I’d like to share with others what one change can do. I have been feeling tired, unmotivated, and generally blah. I also gained weight, which I wasn’t happy about and it is so difficult to lose. I love sweets! I wish there was an easy way to lose the cravings! Well, after visiting my Dr. for a checkup and bloodwork I found out I have high cholesteral, and borderline diabetes, and other issues which could all be helped by losing weight. I was trying to think of a good way to exercise, and it seems so simple now, I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. I am walking 30 minutes every morning and what a difference in my attitude, how my body feels, and I am hoping I will see a weight loss! It is a good time to think about the day, clear your head and enjoy the beauty of nature around you in a slower pace. I am feeling optimistic now and looking forward to a different and better life. It was hard for me to start, it seems I am always tired, but my best time is in the morning and I decided to make the most of it. Does anyone have other ideas that have worked for you?

I walk/run, walk for a few minutes and work your way to a very slow jog for a few seconds here and there. I also bought a pedometer. 10,000 steps a day…a book was written about it. It is hard to do, but over the months I have worked my way up to that, just not everyday! I park my car farther away than normal as well.
You should check out the book “The Best of Everything After 50″ by Barbara Hannah Grufferman. Not only does she go through similar experiences, but she goes to all the experts and Dr.’s to find real solutions for women with similar problems. The book has helped me tremendously. I feel and look more fit. My bloodwork came back great as well.
There are also many other topics in her book besides diet and exercise strategies. It totally motivated me. Try the pedometer!! It is so much fun!!
Best of Luck to you !!!!
I’ve been thinking of getting a pedometer, and now I will! Thanks for the suggestion for it and the book. I will go online today and see if I can order the book. Thanks again for your posting!
I ordered the book and am really looking forward to reading it. Thanks so much for your suggestions. I am going to incorporate them into my exercise plan. I’ll let you know how it goes. I just need to stay motivated……
I have never stayed with a regular routine, but on the days when I walk for 30 or 40 minutes (about 2 miles) I feel so energized for what’s next in my day. It’s like what all the experts say is true!! Thanks for your post and encouragement.
Hi Deidre,
Love your post. For me, reading what all the great ladies here on VN are doing to keep their minds, as well as their bodies healthy, has helped me to keep up my positive thinking towards having healthier eating and exercise habits.
My one change, I have signed up to do a 5 k run in June and once commited, I knew I had to keep up and increase my walk / run exercise programm. I started with a two minute walk / 1 minute run and am now up to a 10 minute run / 1 minute walk and I feel great.

Hi Anir,
How long did it take you to get up to the 10 min run, I’m not there yet, it is very difficult (shin splints!).
Packed on the pounds (20 lbs) after quitting smoking last year! Also with menopause all at once it is a bit overwhelming!!
Yes, as for dieting, no continual diet really works, you HAVE to change your entire way of eating for good! It is a life style change but I have never felt better. Even though I have not lost the 20 lbs, most of it is toned and turned to muscle.
Thank you all too for the great ideas!!
Hi carolann,
Shin splints? Did your doctor say it was O.K. to run? It’s very important that you don’t agravate your injuries.
I’m not sure how long it took since I started on the treadmill this spring and stoped for a few weeks since my treadmill became too squeaky. It was worst after I oiled it.
I have been run/walking outside for almost 5 weeks. I alternate with a run day and rest day, so I go at least 3 times a week and do a 5 k everytime. I increased my running by doing about 2 min walk / 1 min run and upped my running time by shortening my walking time by 30 seconds on every 3rd run. I still do art least a 1 min walk between the ten minutes and I stop to stretch about halfway. I also bring water that I drink during my stretch.
I walk if I find I can’t run the whole 10 minutes. I had to walk for the last 5 minutes on my last time out because I thought I could do without the resting stretch in the middle. Won’t be doing that again until I do the 5 k race which has water at the 2.5 k mark.
I say do what feels right for you. Don’t overdo it just for the sake of it. Relax when you run. Do it for the fun of moving and feel good about it. I know I will never be an elite athlete but I am a runner.

Not warming up (correctly or long enough), overstriding, inclines and overdoing cause shin splints. I get them whem I overdo the hills. They can lead to stress fracture, so need to be taken seriously. WebMD has a good write-up with warmup exercise:

Thank you, I probably don’t warm up enough!! Thank you so much, I’ll check out the site!!! XOX

You are inspiring me! I have a long way to go. I am walking 1 mile right now. (Just started a week ago) but already feel better. I am going to try mixing it up a bit to see if I can run! I need to lose 25 pounds. I have been through this before with Jennie Craig twice. I lost the weight but it came back usually in less than a year. I need to focus on the long term lifetime changes. I’m not sure how to do that. Any ideas? I know I need to do this but feel I am going into an area where I have never been before. When I was younger ( up until my late forties) I never had to worry about weight. I am only 5 ft tall and always was petite. I really don’t feel like myself anymore. I really don’t think I will ever be that weight again but a 20 lb loss would make me more than happy. And keeping it off is my goal. It’s hard to accept the changes that have occurred in my body as I have aged. I’m sure all of you out there feel my pain! It is an inspiration to talk to you and thank you for your post!
Hi Deidre,
Good for you. Walking is as good an exercise as running if you do it often enough and walk at least 30 minutes. I found that my metabolism really reved up after I had exercised for a month. So you might start to see a slight weight reduction in about a month or so providing you eat well.
And of course, we all know that the eating too much part packs on those pounds. I eat 3 meals a day and 3 snacks a day. I have about 40 pounds to loose since I already lost about 20 pounds so far. I have been yo-yoing since I had my first child 28 years ago. It must be harder if you have been the same weight for so long and now have those extra pounds. I am 5’6″ and people can’t beleive I weigh as much as I do. I am big boned and have been told I carry my weight well. Well, I’m tired of carrying it! This is the year the yo-yo stops and so far I am doing well especially since I joined the weight-loss challenge on this site. You can join anytime. I find the ladies on there and the suggestions they make very helpfull. Just write in ‘weight loss challenge’ on the search engine in the upper right corner and register by cliking on the link moongodess has in her post.
Hope to see you on the challenge. Just noticed I did not post on the challenge week 20 but twice on the one for week 19. I joined during week 5.

Thanks for your post. Great idea, I will join the weight loss challenge.
more power to you with your walk/run program. 5k that’s a good challenge. i have never enjoyed running. i do like to walk, and walk quickly. don’t like to dawdle. i am only about 5’3″ and have always enjoyed my food; second helpings were my downfall! so last year i put on a few pounds, so have basically cut out all second helpings, and eat 3 meals a day – porridge or yoghurt and fruit for breakfast; salad with some form of protein for lunch and yoghurt and fruit; then dinner with lots of veggies. am now going to Zumba dance/exercise usually twice a week and yoga once a week; so getting more exercise than i ever did before. i feel much better for it, and have been keeping my weight at the weight i want. i am small boned; now weigh less than both my daughters! runners i have lots of respect for them, because i just can’t do it!! good luck with your continued training.
Thank you Ladysmith,
You sound like you have a full program. Good for you. I am also trying to squeeze in Zumba but I work full time and just can’t seem to fit it in every week.
The 5K run I will be doing also has a 10K run as well as a 5K walk. The walk is mostly along a beach and very pleasant. The organisers are well aware that all forms of exercise are important.

Hi Deidre,
I know exactly what you mean by Not feeling like yourself!! I MISS MYSELF too!!! It’s taken me months to lose 4 pounds!!! I feel I have at least 10-15 lbs to go! A site that really helped me was http://www.fitday.com. There is a food log you cna start, you put in your measurements and you can also log your daily activities. It’s free and has thousands of foods on it and there nutrional values. If the food you eat isn’t on there you can copy it in from the label and creat custom foods which it stores for you. That helped me see where I was as far as Fat/Carbs/Protien ratios, there are Pie Charts and graphs you can create to see your progress. It helped me alot! And it was fun.
Also don’t forget about the book I mentioned. She writes alot about diet and supplements too!
