Meditation

I met a very nice woman at an arts and crafts show last week…she had written a book on meditation so I purchased it….my question…do you meditate, where and when, how often? Do you think it helps you?

I took a Vipassana course in my twenties, but while I still have my meditation bench, I let my practice go until I took my first Reiki class about five years ago. It was only after learning Reiki that I spontaneously started to meditate and the way I do it is constantly evolving.

I now meditate pretty much every day while I give myself Reiki on my bed, usually surrounded by my two diva kitties. I walk a lot and sometimes meditate during my walks and because I get restless when standing in line, I’ll sometimes meditate then, too. I’ll even do it when I am by myself on the bus.

I have fatigue issues and my mind seems to have two speeds: full blast or off… much like a popcorn popper. Meditation helps in more ways then I could possibly list. It helps me relax, slow down, be more aware, get out of my head and back into my body, concentrate, listen and be a nicer, more loving person. I’ll receive unexpected answers during my meditation sessions because for a change the noise inside me isn’t receiving all my attention.

When I allow myself to slow down and go with the flow, anything can become a form of meditation, an experience in mindfulness… cooking, dancing, writing, washing the floor, giving Reiki to others, hanging out with my kitties, staring out at the lake watching the birds do their thing, listening to music, taking a shower, making love…

That’s the real magic with meditation, being able to bring it into your life. Something I would like more of.

I have meditated for 40 years — sometimes with a very good tape — and sometimes with my own getting into the zone — the alpha state.  Either works as it gets us into a subtle dream-like flowing state which more or less puts the breaks on anxiety and other negative moods in the day.  Meditating and self-hypnosis is as simple as day-dreaming on a specific positive though — or mantra — like ‘love’, happiness etc.  It works and it is like taking vitamins — you may not see an instant result – but after a while you might look back and see how you have subtly been handling your life and some of your thinking.

You can meditate to a favorite piece of quiet, serene music.  I was told by my teacher that I could meditate for those minutes I am in a line – with my eyes open — daydreaming – and nobody would know.  I can meditate at a bus stop the same way.  As often as I like — it’s for me.  The more the better – it’s like not driving your car into the ground because it is a good car and works.  You are the car — you have 12 to 16 hour days and we/you need ‘space’ from those demands of your day.  Take it — you deserve it.

You are gonna love it!!  Meditation has been one of the most valuable tools of my wellness — along with prayer!!

Hi Maggie, I’ve been teaching myself self-hypnosis and if you have any helpful tips, I would really appreciate it. Feel free to private message me.

Dancing, I am considering taking classes on self-hypnosis in the fall.  Looking forward to this new modality.  Yoga & Reiki are my constants now & bring me great relaxation & less stress.  Let me know how you do.

Mags, it sounds like we have some things in common. I started doing yoga in my teens and the more I do with Reiki, the more excited I am about it.

If you take the class on self-hypnosis, please let me know how it goes. I’m dealing with fatigue issues and am hoping hypnosis will help with that and other things, as well.

Feel free to private message me.

        Take care.
