I am truly surprised at the lack of respect some people still have for differences in religious values. Do we think Heaven would be divided up into denominational sections?

No denominational division for sure. Just true believers….AMEN!!!
Like Jerusalem is? Years ago, I visited jerusalem. I was surprised to see that there was a Christian section, a Jewish section and a Muslim section. I was told that, after dark, you stay in your own neighborhood. Maybe Heaven is divided up similarly? All kidding aside, religion is serious stuff in the MIddle East. You don’t want to mess with people’s differences there. I would wear veils if I were in a Muslim country because I want to live. You know what I mean? Think about what happened in MAsada, for example. Some historians believe the story is false, but the Jewish people still today tell the story about the 1,000 Jewish people who chose to kill themselves than to be ruled by the Romans. Now that’s revealing about how a large group of people feel about their religion.
Jerusalem isn’t the only place divided by denomination differences. There are cities all over the world with divisions. Been to Jerusalem all three quarters. I was respectful in observing some local practices, ie head covered in synagogues, mosques and catholic churches, dress below the knees in muslim quarter. We should observe the same respect we would give a friends home. I guess I have the same question as dynamomma as to what you define as spiritual principals. It fascinates me all the different beliefs people have and how they came into being.
Hi MiMa jeri: This is an interesting question. Before we launch into a discussion (which sounds so enlightening and interestering), could you define what “spiritual principles” are to you? And then qualify how one truly practices the principles. I’ll be waiting for your response and looking forward to it.
Yes how do you define spiritual principles? I think the opening question is way too general. conversationally it’s a difficult topic on a forum like this.
As it happens, I practice what most people would consider universal spiritual principles, and which are very different thans praciticing spiritual tools on a daily basis which keep me going on a pretty even keel. Tools I define as meditation, prayer, Easy does It, gratitude lists, giving myself credit lists, asking my HP for direction and guidance on a daily basis, sometimes hourly basis. This HP of mine would be a Universal G-d or force or being.
But principles are defined as honesty, hope, courage, humility, faith, love etc.
I suppose my answer would be yes I practice spiritual principles and am very tolerant of others needs to practice their own religion in whatever way they seem fit. I must admit I am not a Christian and if I am intolerant at all, its not towards Muslims, Jews, Wicca, Universal New Agers, it’s towards Christians who insist there is no Hope for me outside of their own beliefs and try to impose it on me. Because I was born a Jew.
Very well said…my DH & I were discussing the issue of intolerance this morning…how have folks lost their way (the Christians, I mean) when the most important teachings of the faith is “Do unto others…”, the golden rule, and ‘judge not, lest ye not be judged’
Rather than being a vague subject, this is a broad one…spiritual principles can be defined differently by each of us and in those definitions we would hopefully find some commonality…my personal principle is that God is God by many different names and worshiped in many different ways…but still one GOD, Higher Power, Source Within, Creator, Being, Allah,..
Peace & Grace to all this day!
.
I agree that SP is too vague, as where , whom, and how these principles are created. May mother converted to a religion that was not defined but was more like christian-jew, as an African American living in the community of christians , it was an experience, as I began to study outside of “my faith” I found “ssues” misinformation, and belife that some people are “special” and others to recieve the crumbs from the Master’s table. after 34 years of being faithful . My mind was ste friend ,. I began to read other books other bibles, and like Catherine I too am of the Universe, I believe that God She/He , eternal, Being. Creator etc. is bigger than one group of people and I respect all faiths and enjoy parts of all ..but no one in my opinion hasa one way ticket that everybody else hs to follow.
I believe the most spiritual laws we can observe are, Love ,simply Love, respect others and treat others as you would have them respect and treat you, Actually love covers everything right and wholesome, I can’t see a universe so vast and endless that would be based on a few people who cannot unite within their own faith much less unite the world…The Power that be is greater than all of us and is us….We are heading toward a more spiritual truth and people are beginning to read and search and go within to the center of the universe within and truly find GOD.
It is obvious that the world is hung up on theological differences……hence all the war and unrest where people can not leave each other to thier individual practice of spirituality. I do not subscribe to any reknowned religion or denomination there of, but do have my own personal spiritual beliefs and a path that does not require anyone elses involvement whatsoever. All religions attempt to answer the same basic questions. Where did we come from, what is our purpose and where are we going after death? Why do we have to be indoctrinated in one peruasion or another, or impose our beliefs on others? Each person must find thier own way on thier own life journey, that does not include imposition, recruiting or harm to others in the name of any God. We do not choose where we are born or what we are taught early in our lives but we all have the right, need and ability to make our choice as we grow and learn from all of the world, what is good and what is not for all humankind. Live and let live. My parents come from Irish heritage and I can not believe that my grandparents after falling in love, were disowned by thier families and banished because one was raised catholic and the other protestant. How can this make sense when they are supposedly worshipping the same God? Far too many lives have been lost all over the world in the name of all the many God’s, for me to believe that this is what spiritualty is about. As I said before, live and let live in love peace and harmony. Embrace the wonderful differences and denounce any act of indoctrination or harm. When will we learn?
It is a personal experience with my God that keeps me adoring Him. And everyone has their own ways of loving their God. We all come from different belifs, back grounds, teachings. And we all need to respect each person, and how they worship their God. It is a personal feeling. We touch a part of ourselves when we reach out to our God, and to others. Love your neighbor as thyself. Do unto others as you would to yourself. etc.. And you have those that don’t understand, or will not except a God because they do not have hard proof in their eyes to believe. So all we can do is love, and except others as they are. And let people diside how they want to live their own lives. That is a choice, and should be. We have no right to force others to believe as we do. But, when you go about your lives, and not say nothing, and live as you see fit, and how your God lives in your life, heart, soul, and mind. Sometimes people see, and then understand how powerful your love, and belief is, and sometimes they start to look for a God in their lives, to fill a void that so many of us feel. God is something to look up to, feel whole, and to cling to when we don’t know what to do anymore. So each to their own, we should not judge, just love.
Hey MiMa jeri: Are you still out there? This discussion just dwindled off. Was that by choice? It still could be an interesting conversation.
