Do most women at 50 and above see a need to address their spiritual health as much as their physical health? Hot Conversation

Do most women at 50 and above see a need to address their spiritual health as much as their physical health? Especially their inner beauty as much as their outer beauty?

I am going through a time where my spiritual life and my physical health means a lot to me. Understanding, that my body is my “mode of transportation” to accomplish what is my purpose in this life before I transend…I startred at a very young age, my journey has been .long ,but it has stepped up quite a bit since I turned 58…..I am healthy and fit for my age, stronger than most , but my concern is working on my healthy choices I for my spirit, mind and body and I want to improve on my inner beauty I see blogs get more attention on face creams and unwanted hair than unwanted attitudes and habits…anybody feel like me? I do like all the blogs hair , creams, etc….they are great but…..what about serious subjects too?

I am not a religious church going person, but I do believe in God and Jesus and prayers.  I’m 58yrs and I have found in the last few years I have been more spiritual.  I have started reading the Bible more often and talking to God as a friend.  I use to worry all the time about things I couldn’t control.  Since I have started this journey, I find I do not worry as much and feel more relaxed about life.  My physical body is a disaster, maybe that’s why I turned inside to the spirtual.

When I turned fifty, I found I was not where I wanted to be phsyically, spiritually, mentally or finanacially.  I never set very clear goal fro myself part it being I was busy just trying to make sure my family and my basic needs were met and I did not believe I would live past my mid forties.

My grandmother, my father died in their forties of heart/blood problems. Cardiology has come a very long way in the  25 years since dad died. The new technolgy has given me the chance to live far beyond my parents and gradparents.

My journey has had some strange turns and I am still searching for the purpose I was put here to achieve. I’m looking for a church home now that I have  the ability to attend again and am looking forward to resume my path.

I enjoy inspiriational books, ( as well as a variety of other books) and to being able to make another trip to the Holy Land ,the first was just to short for me.

It has taken me decades to remember that the body is a temple and I should care for it as I would a temple.  This is an area I have been most delinquent in.   I am learning.

Tell me what you are doing to work toward your spiritual and health goals.

Thanks so much for your response it is one of the reasons I joined VN because I wanted to blog with women who were on the path or wnaated to get on it.

I was a part of a one church for over 34 years and finally saw that there were things that I could not go along with….not that I didn’t want to obey any rules as there were many….I still respect and keep more then the peope who stil go there, i saw no need to throw ‘the Baby out with the bath water”. I sat down one day because I knew that I was happy but not really happy, my soul was yearning , my oldest daughter recieved a tape by Ivan Sertima and it changed my ife….I didn’t understand the Law of attraction, but I had prayed to God for knowledge, after receiving the tape I cried for I was happy that some ight was coming to me, you see as an African American I had no clue of the true history of our people, and tkhe wonderful that we contributed.

I went through some oragnizations….but soon learned that people want to gain for themselves at the expense of the poor and thoes who are cueless. I became determined to make a difference in the lives of women and children….I believe if God place chilldbirth in he hands of women then we must be responsibe for the treaures that we bear. I began to draw and paint women with their babies wrapped in gold…..symboiic our children are our greatest treasure not our money, I went on to paint about sisterhood The Three sisters…..my work has gone international, I ve been in Mom documentary, PBS New YORK ,and my work has  been aired on PBS Houston, I began to put historical truth into stories for children as well as morals and simple wisdom of which children donot  recieve much today… Ididn’t start this career unti I was 44

I became a Storyteller, Writer, Artist,Activist, Open my own Gallery , and Co Host on Public Radio

where We work hard to educate the public on health, education, and spiritual wisdom.

So I read a lot and I do not allow myself to be in “any box”I read across the board of spiritual and encouraging information…I believe God speaks to everyone and everyone has God in them,

I traveled to China this year and it was an eye opening experience. and it made me feel the urgency to do what my purpose….I have ove 25 stories to publish, and several books to print

Health—-I am walking and exercising with a few women, I am moving toward being a vegetarian,

I want to be an instrument to bring women together….we can change the world. but we must work on our inner beauty and guess what I found out when I meditate, and relax my mind and nuture my body I actually glow and get more compliments than ever.

Books  like THe Spiritual Warrior, The Power of Now, The Alchemist ( the last one I’ve read” I believe this one woud be great for you , it’s sold over 2 million,  and it answers your question

I hope I have helped I left out a lot, my life has been busy since I decided to follow my spirit…

I read the book “The Secret” last fall, which was my introduction to the Law of Attraction.  I do believe that what we think and dwell on does affect our reality.  I also feel that we can receive and achieve without taking away from those who have so little. The book “The Quilt” brought home how thankless a world we have become and the need to be grateful to the Creator for all our blessings (as well as our trials) . My mother used to refer to me as “the Book Pusher” when I found a book that inspired I would share it with everyone…..lol some of books have seen more states than I have!

I embrace Judaochristian beliefs… I mean if you’re going to follow a “Jewish carpenter” shouldn’t you know what He celebrated, hence some 10 years back our household began the celebrating of Jewish holidays along with the other holidays we embrace.  My nieces and nephews (teenagers) invited their friends  to our celebrations where I would explain the Jewish prospective and how it relates to the Christain prospective  those grown kids still come to our celebrations.  I want a church home.  Until my career took over my life I had been very active in my church ( being a military brat I attended non demoniational churches).  The last 15 years I worked all day SUnday so I have missed the fellowship.  I am looking for a new church home.

I am not sure where my path is going to take me, but I am looking for a way to inspire other people to reach out and help where they can.  Unfortunately the need is all around us.   At times, l it is overwhelming.

I will check out the book you recommended.  I don’t know if you noticed but you can sumbit storie to VN for publication, check it out at the very bottom of the page under VNBooks.

I am hoping to have a second career going very soon, until then I ramble down my path.

I really appreciate your post.  I do share your focus on unwanted attitudes and habits, and am finding that it has been in shifting those that my enjoyment/quality of life has improved.  There have been numerous spiritual books along the way that have been meaningful to me, including Deepak Chopra’s “Seven Spiritual Laws for Success”.  I do my best to live my life in alignment with the spiritual principles that I understand, such as forgiveness and acceptance.  It’s not that I don’t care about my physical appearance.  In fact, I’ve gotten back into swimming laps several times a week over the past year, and I am thrilled with the physical changes that are coming about – weigh loss, muscle tone, feeling stronger, and I have lots more energy.

I have a friend who is a Mary Kay consultant, and I recently just had to tell her that I probably was not the profile of her best customer because my purchases would likely be generally confined to refills on moisturizer and lipstick because I didn’t wear much make up.  I live on an island that is quite casual, so this fairly natural approach works just fine for me.

I’ll look forward to hearing more of your thoughts on spirituality.

Thanks for your response, I just finished The Alchemist , I purchased Deepak’s book on the Twenty Spiritual Lesson… The church I was a member of for 34 years was based on the Seven Spiritual Principals , tha wa over 45 years ago…I wondeer if thoes are the same ones. I learned so much being a part of that church, but had to move on as Spirituality cannot be contained to just strict rules and rituals.

I truly want to be a “light” to all people, it pains me a I see how we try to separate ourselves. by location, economic,. religion and race…..life is too big for such small minds.

I prayed for God to send someone who could assist me in getting my work out .I felt I had gone as far as my ability in my work.In a 5 year period I had become an artist/ writer/ activist/ etc. and everyone  around me had goktten so use to me “doing it all” amd helping them tha no one realize I aneeded help ,as I put my work on the back burner,

God  sent a a Buddhist woman who happen to be in an Indian HaraKrisher Temple yet she was Black and it was she who came into my life as I hit an issue that is calle” Darkest night of the Soul” What I learned from her……be still, listen, chant meditate….amd I got through what I believe has been my hardest test. She made it her business too help everyone she touched, she was a true servant …then she died of an agressive cancer ,,,,,and she is still giving me she downloaded information on my computer…she lef me hr spiritual books The Spiritual Warrior.. and left word for me  to carry on the message…The Indian community of where she lived while she was ill loved and respected her.At her memorial I learned how I want my memorial, they laid all her personal things out and there were few, because she lived simple and they asked her fiends to pick up a memento , I got her hand made chanting beads .Her memorial lasted way into the night becaue everyone wanted to go to the mic. and tell of her beautiful life of service she died one week after her 49th birthday  they said of her, if they could get more African American like her they could build there temple and grow faster because she made a better Buddhist than many of them.  But guess what she taught me?……that she was not her race or her body, she was a spirit in a Black body and that it is the spirit of each one of us that  we must touch and give service in our best way.

The more i blog i realize i need to write my story for it is rich with beautiful and intersesting spirits

found in many colors of bodies….Life is so great when you stop , view, smell and pick the roses.

I clean my face , mositrurize it with almond oil, and I wear  lipstick sometimes, I don’t have to worry about being seen without it and people have a reverse shock….like many of the movie stars without makeup it is unbelievable how good makeup can make them look…..i always smile and say if i want to look glamorous there is hope(LOL)

I was privileged to have parents who allowed for my natural curiosity in most avenues of life.  I have always been part of a church (except the last 15 years when my position required that I work every Sunday ).    In my teenage years I attended services with my friends… being a military brat there was diversity all around me.  I was fortunate enough to attend all of the major religious services and don’t think I missed to many denominations.  I grew up thinking you married the one you loved and it did not matter what religious background, ethnic background, race or country they came from.

There was such diversity on the base.  I was introduced to cultures from around the world and from the people that abide in this country before the Europeans arrived.

The exposure to these different  beliefs, cultures  did not confuse me, though it did send me on journeys  my parents did not understand.  I would find a passage in the Bible or a book, or just something someone said in conversation…. if I did not understand or fully grasp I would search out information through books, the Internet , scholars until I was satisfied.  Some of these “tangents, ” as my mother referred to them took me  three or four years to work though.  The strangest  obscure things fascinate me.

Several years ago I was began a wall hanging ( it’s still a work in progress) based on Revelations 20:21 the New Jerusalem since me on a journey that would last 5 years. It all started with a reference to the twelve foundations were represented by the twelve disciples.. Okay what were the foundations…. what stone represented which disciple,   how about Judas  is he still considered.  Tracking down the stones was frustrating because some things change over time….  then the fabric had to be dyed to match the description there were other issues……..suffice to say I finally got my information together so that I could begin.

That also means that something has me searching now.  I don’t suppose the searching will ever stop for but  now I can enjoy the journey. I also look forward to new journeys.

I just joined this site, but I am a Law Of Attraction Life Coach.  I totally agree with you that as we get over 50 the important things in life are really all about spiritual and inner growth and beauty of the body & mind.  Lets face it our bodies aren’t what they used to be, and we are o.k. with that.  Our journey in this life isn’t about looking beautiful on the outside and we now realize that inner beauty, being centered emotionally and spiritually is just as important.  My journey started before my 50s but now that I am a LOA Life Coach my journey has stepped up incredibly.  This path I’m on is amazing, refreshing and I can finally attract all that I am and all that I can be.  But best of all realize the abundance in my life and the things I can be grateful for.

After spending 3 months in silent retreat I really “got” that the voices inside my head that loudly proclaim my inadequacy are not really ME. They are a result of a lifetime of programming. I believe we all have those voices that tell us we’re not good enough, pretty enough, thin enough, smart enough and then insist that there is really is something wrong with us. These inner voices goad us into doing things… and later beat us up for doing them!

Meditation has helped me to see these “voices” for what they are – simply old conditioning. While it’s hard to shut them up (yes, I’ve tried) – I’ve learned not to believe them. Patterns of negative behavior usually follow patterns of negative thought. Challenge your negative thinking. Ask: Who said so? How do I know that? Is  it really true? How do I know?

Detaching the authentic YOU from all those negative inner voices can help you make more life-affirming choices by accessing the wise woman within. It takes time and a committment to sit still – but it’s worth it!

1st – don’t believe your thoughts – whenever you have a negative thought say CANCEL / CANCEL – I also recommend you look up on the internet the technique called EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) by Gary Craig.  Easy & simple – not a hocus pocus – and it really works.

Change your focus by doing anything you really love….and really apply yourself to it; give it your full attention.  Examples – Music – join a choir / Walk 10, 000 steps per day / Take a cooking class – Just go out there and have fun!!!

I have been using the 21 day habit plan where I repeat a habit or an activity for 21 days straight and it seems to work for me.

I had an issue with someone so for 21 days I treated them the way I wanted them to treat me. It made me aware of my “habits” that needed improving and it really made me realize if you want something then give it and it will come back to you!!

A friend of mine shared something her Grandmother taught her and I bleiev it works

when a negative thought comes to you  before you act on it ask yourself  these 3 queswtions

        Is it Kind?

         Is it True ?

        Is it necessary ?

sometimes even if the first one or the first two are yes, the last one will tell the story everything  true is not always necessary and everything kind isn’t always necessary.

The fact that you are aware of your negavity is a positive character

It all begins with yourself.  But we have tools of our own consciouness (visualization, meditation, affirmation) to help us along the way.

To be empowered and positive for your day, begin it each morning with a ritual of visualization and affirmation.  Turn your thoughts to positive and that will be the pattern for the day.

We have been given the tools of strength and balance in our body, mind and spirit connection. We do not require any outside stimulus to open and expand our state of consciousness to include the sensitivities of empowerment within our humanity.

Using prayer to connect to the highest source of all qualities allows the spirit to grow and be within a framework of love. It solidifies the connection between human frailties and the God of our own understanding. Opening and closing all our efforts with spirit, in prayer solidifies the covenant we seek with the guiding force of all life.

As you can program your computer to its language, so can you program your universe to the language of love. With this programming in place, the universe will resonate with the highest frequencies of ‘life force energy’, ‘God’; ‘Light’ that resonate at this frequency.

When you focus on this frequency, your being becomes attuned, like a musical instrument and will bring it into harmony in every cell of our universe. When you focus on fear, it creates disharmonic frequencies in your being.

        God bless, J

        TOOLS OF OUR OWN CONSCIOUSNESS
        (Visualization,Meditation, Affirmation)

We have been given the tools of strength and balance in our body, mind and spirit connection. We do not require any outside stimulus to open and expand our state of consciousness to include the sensitivities of empowerment within our humanity.

Using prayer to connect to the highest source of all qualities allows the spirit to grow and be within a framework of love. When you focus on this frequency, your being becomes attuned, like a musical instrument and will bring it into harmony in every cell of our universe. When you focus on fear, it creates disharmonic frequencies in your being.

This inspiration talks to our interaction with others: Reason, Season, Lifetime Author unknown

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be

Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it, it is real. But only for a season.

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

We can neither create nor destroy energy; we can only change its form. As we create something, we do not create the energy, but take energy that already exists and change its form into that which we desire.

The human existence is a series of many electrical systems. We call them body, mind, and spirit connection, functioning together as one reality. When we create our thought forms, send them through this maze of electrical systems, which is then sent to a universal consciousness, this energy is then returned to manifest our desires.

If the electrical systems within the individual existence are fragmented, dysfunctional or distorted through fear and negativity, the thought form is sent out and returns distorted. If the electrical system is blocked, the thought form may never have the opportunity to be completed.

As the individual creation takes the universal energy already in existence and exercises creative mind, giving the energy meaning and direction with thought, the most powerful energy in the universe, creative manifestation is now set into motion. You have been doing this your entire life.

Thought is energy set into motion. What your mind creates, your body and spirit can manifest.

        AFFIRMATION

Our mind can be encouraged to think upon the lines of positive empowerment that we instill. To begin affirmations, it must be noted that it is important to use one that you can believe. Paying lip service to action will not get the job done. Even when it does not make sense to you at the present time, your consciousness can be exercised (like any muscle in the body) to accept this new thought.

Affirmations will be freeing us from the conscious thoughts that ‘life is pain’ and therefore to be endured. When we begin our affirmations, if this thought is embedded in our consciousness, we will not succeed in our efforts.

Not all in life is pain. There are many joys and it is our responsibility to accentuate the positive, finding the joys of life as we learn and grow. Life is not all black and white, the joys of life can be found even in our sorrow.

In nature, all is seeded in a soil of comfort and security, but to grow also requires fertilizer. The manure we put on our plants, while waste in another aspect, can nourish our flowers to blossom. Sit back and enjoy the results as the end product of the lessons of life.

On waking, to begin your day, turn your thoughts from chaos and confusion to peace and harmony with a simple affirmation. Without the calming exercise, you begin your day in hurry and bustle, which is designed to create chaos for your entire day.

During the stresses of your day, take a moment to repeat your affirmation and calm any loaded situation. Make it the last thought before sleep at night to ensure a peaceful dream state.

        VISUALIZATION

Using the mind to visualize in conjunction with a meditative, peaceful state is our ability to calm our consciousness for stress relief and health. Our imagination can picture anything in our mind we choose. Keeping it positive and of nature is
an important aspect of manifesting peace and calm within, when it is needed for life.

All energies flow from the source, the creator of all life. Beginning all exercises of our consciousness with a prayer puts the spiritual aspect we are seeking for ourselves into all our efforts for ourselves as well as others. From the spirit allow the greater spirit to guide and protect you through all activities of being, so that service is the watchword of a loving life. Be a part of the spread of energy of peace, calm and harmony throughout a troubled world so that you can remain
a part of the raising of consciousness of all life.

Sit comfortably, close the eyes to distraction and breathe gently. Take note of your breathing and allow it to slow and calm, releasing tensions from the body. Let go of the stresses causing tension within the body, blow out several times to get in touch with your deeper breathing.

Picture water lapping on a shore (the scene can be one of your own choosing, either from memory or produced for this purpose), with the ebb and flow of the water, feel your whole being flowing, in and out, relaxing and enlivening your whole body, mind and spirit connection.

The beach has warm sand beneath your feet and a warm sun upon your shoulders. You are peaceful and calm as you walk along your secluded, private personal space. Listen to the ebb and flow of the tides. Feel the calm of this sound.

When ready, enter the cool waters to refresh. Flow again with the tides of the water as you enjoy it over, around and through your whole being.

When ready, leave the cool water and return to the warm sandy beach. You will feel energized and full of warmth that seeps deep within your body. To share it, visualize someone you know of who could do with a calming thought and send some of your new- found peace along to them, as well.

You are ready to return to your conscious state and bring this peaceful, calm energy into all you think, do and be for the coming hours. It is important to say a prayer of thanks on completion of any exercise that calls on the universe to re-energize, renew and refresh your being as you work to also send peace and calm to others.

        MEDITATION

The literal interpretation of Meditation is….To think upon. Using visualization, sound, music, etc. we can concentrate and retrain our mind upon a single purpose.

Contemplation and meditation are so important to our consciousness. We can unlock hidden, spiritual potential within our own being. There is only one spiritual center for each individual. There are many methods and purposes to reach this spiritual center. There remains only one motive “Service” to all in spirituality.

Meditation is used for many purposes and in many ways to produce energies and feelings of calm and peace. When we are in need of personal energy or healing, meditation can bring awareness to our body, mind and spirit connection.

It is also used for attunement for the gifts of the spirit (spiritual healing, clairvoyance, inspired speaking, inspirations, etc.) bringing enlightenment of the spirit. Therefore, there will be different techniques for different purposes. For the purpose of stress relief and relaxation, inner peace is found in a simple meditation upon a calm, beautiful place of peace. It can be a beautiful object such as a flower, or music can set a tone of relaxation.

In a moving meditation, we are uniting the body, mind and spirit through such exercises as tai chi, yoga, labyrinth walk or any repetitive activity. This can also be washing a floor, painting a wall, dusting, jogging or power walking, in fact, any activity that causes all outside thoughts to fall away. When this puts us in the present moment, we are meditating.

To attune through meditation to spirit guides and teachers for the purpose of mediumship gifts (clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, trance, inspiration, etc.) it is important to reach our guidance with a symbol of our own choosing to personalize the contact. It is effective for the symbols we use to come from nature, as this is such a living, thriving source of energies. Flowers neither reap nor sow, they offer the beauty and scent of their being for all to be uplifted and enlivened in spirit.

Each time we make attunement with our guiding forces, we strengthen that partnership of spirit. With each exercise, it becomes easier to make the connection we desire. The results of this attunement are the manifestation of all mediumship gifts on a spiritual level of our consciousness.

Knowledge is the foundation upon which we build. Training of the consciousness at many levels is the exercise to seek knowledge. Meditation will cultivate the understanding so that knowledge is absorbed by us and applied in our everyday living. We have the opportunity to take knowledge on a personal basis, expand and refine it to our needs individually.

Meditation is a wondrous adventure and can be an important step in our spiritual awareness. As spirit here and now, everything in this universe is open to our use, there is no limit to what we can learn, and only the limitations we impose upon ourselves.

The mind is the greatest tool or instrument that we own. It is unfortunate that most of us are not aware of the great potential of our minds. The opening and expanding of our consciousness not only touches our spirit, but also opens a whole new world of spirit for our exploration and growth.

We can form a partnership with the spirit guardians, guides and teachers who touch our lives. We can work with them to make this experience of a more spiritual nature. We will be getting in touch with a more complete aspect of which we are as a human being now in this material world of existence.

Once we empower our body, mind, and spirit connection with these tools of strength and balance, we will find our consciousness opening and expanding to another dimension of awareness, generally referred to as the psychic.

We have been using our 5 senses (sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell) in a material world and can take these onto this other level of awareness and add intuition and I know (from the heart…it neither sees nor hears, it just knows). It is important to be open to all the senses to manifest, not only on the physical level, but also on the spiritual level. Warm and cold feelings are two of the symptoms from energies that are frequently felt during meditation.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin:  We are not a human being having a spiritual experience.  We are a spiritual being having a human experience.

It seems to take a little life experience (like 50+) to get that message accross.  So I wrote the above as a chapter in my book on spirituality.

        God bless, J

I have read the info in several books…I truly understand what you are saying , i am a peron who seem to help others sometimes before I help myself….I prayed for a friend who could help me as I have so many things going on …I met the most beautiful sister in spirit and kindness who was there for me at a time that no one I knew could have been the answer….she lived about  18 months after we became friends and she passed on her books to me that were

based on what you are teaching,

Now for the Blue Wall…..It is better for me to look out and see a blue wall or any color that I choose that is is soothing rather than look out at the side of a house that needs repairs or removing…I know that I don’t have to have the wall to contact The Creator..I learned that as i faced death  after giving birth to my second child.

Thank you again for your writing I appreciate any  truth and value I recieve from wherever The Creator sends it.

Why do you want to get serious?  Sounds to me like you have been taking very good care of yourself.  Over the years I’ve experienced many things …Prayers…Meditator for almost 30 years….Guru of health & fitness; but you know what, the best thing for you and the world is feeling good.  That good vibration…connecting with life, love and having fun.  That’s what really matters. It’s about what you are feeling…and feeling good is where it’s at.

You have probably heard and seen the movie “The Secret”.  I recommend you read books from Esther Hicks “Abraham”; who says the most important thing is that you feel good.  I recommend you continue to feel and look beautiful…and incorporate a new element if you think that would make you feel better (like prayer / meditation / or even singing…whatever your little heart desires.

    Wishing well!
