I read this recently and was reminded of how I have seen that theory, in different guises, at play, aging along with me and becoming more applicable with each passing year.

I used Noxzema from the time I was old enough to wash my own face, all through school and into adulthood. You’re welcome to it! As I get older, I’ve gotten just a shade crabbier and I have no patience when someone tells me they tried to do something but didn’t, e.g., “I tried to call you.” What does that mean? You put your hand out but it didn’t reach the phone? The phone jumped out of your grasp? Either you called me or you didn’t. My caller ID says that you didn’t.
Needless to say, trying is better than not trying and we sometimes fail when we try, especially kids. That’s part of the human condition, it’s more than OK because that’s how we learn.
But it’s irksome when people say they tried to do something when what they really mean is that they didn’t really try at all.
