Here is the question. I know a lot of people who say they feel they have a Wolf Spirit. they feel a kinship with Wolves. There are those who say the same thing about Horses and Eagles. I am curious if anyone on VN feels one of these as part of their own spirit. I don’t understand this myself….Please don’t say you have to be Native American to understand..I am Native and French which makes me 1/2. Most of the people who tell me of their spirit connection with the above animals are women. So can anyone tell me what’s up with this? Thanks.

The only animal spirit connection I feel is with my dog.
I’ve never felt a kindred with any one specific animal species, Valerie. I feel an affinity for deer and for eagles, but I don’t think I personally believe in the spirit part of it.
Thank you for your responses Scuba P and Duffy M. I can understand your affinities. I haven’t had any of my friends who say they have one kind of animal spirit or another kindred to themselves explain it to me yet…maybe in time. I agree with what you both have said. Thanks again.
I don’t know…I have always had this inner connection to cats. Not just domesticated cats either…but the big, wild beasts. It’s almost like I can see the world through their viewpoint. Of course, I also believe that I have a bear totem. Everywhere I go I see bears and feel a connection with them. I feel protected with bear symbols around. Not silly teddy bears though…it’s the real deal or nothing.
Hi Valerie,
I am also 1/2 Native American although I did not know it until I was in my late 40′s/early 50′s. I have spent a great deal of time studying and learning about their culture and traditions and, as I studied comparative religion in college, have found many similarities to other ancient or indigenous traditions. Animal spirits, animal spirit guides and familiars are part of numerous traditions going back to the days before Christianity. Even groups like the Celts had animal connections.
Sometimes a person is drawn to a specific animal because that is who their animal spirit guide is. Other times, an animal comes into their lives, even just in passing, because it is bringing a message. We don’t pick our animal spirit guides, the pick us. There are those people who have gone on a vision quest to identify their animal spirit guide and learn about the teachings it brings to us. For others, it comes into our lives when we most need guidance. It is said that when we are ready, the teacher will come. The same is true of our animal spirit guides.
I have always loved wolves because of their dignity and their commitment to the family unit. Native people say if you want to know how to raise children, watch how the wolves raise their young. The old saying, “it takes a villlage to raise a child,” is perfect for the way in which wolves raise their pups. Everyone is responsibile for watching out for the, teaching them, repremanding them when it is needed. A female wolf will be the designated babysitter when Mom has to leave them to hunt for food or just to get up and get away from the kids for a while. The entire pack will protect the young ones from preditors and threats. It is a beautiful and amazing process to watch.
I did not pick a wolf as a spirit guide, it picked me. It came to me in the one and only vision I’ve ever had which I had not initiated myself. Rather, it came to me out of the blue, or at least that is how I felt. Later, I sponsored a wolf through an endangered species organization and although she has passed on, I feel her presence with me always. At other times, I have had certain animals cross my path at moments when I was in need of what they had to teach me. For a while it was the blue heron, more recently it has been Cardinals and Blue Jays. I talk to crows. Some people think I’m a bid off my rocker, but all I know is that when I heed a message that comes to me in this form, I find it is always pertinent to what is going on in my life at that moment.
I have been a cat person for almost 20 years now and I learn more about how to be a spiritual person and live a spiritual life every day just by being with them. There are so many things to learn from animals about how to live an authentic life. There are web sites out there that tell you about animal spirit guides and the kinds of messages they bring. Just Google animal spirit guides and enjoy.
Awesome! I really really like what you said but more so how you said it. I have lived with animals all my life. cats, dogs, toads, frogs, horses and on and on. I too am studying American Indian traditions. Not having this in my life as a child because my mother didn’t like her ancestry leaves me no choice but I am learning a lot. I know about animal guides and the rest of which you spoke. I have also have had encounters with different animals that I know are messengers. Right now it is Hawks that have come to me at different times…one time right in the city of San Francisco. I looked up as I turned a corner to get out of town and there was a Hawk. Previousl Hawks had been showing themselves to me almost daily but the one in dowtown SF was the most powerful. My late husband had to go to USCF for cancer treatment counseling otherwise we would not have been in SF. But prior to that, Hawks had been coming to me on a regular basis. One day a Hawk flew from the left side of my truck, allowing me to see his underside, swooped down in front of the truck, flew a few feet in front as tho he was the leader, then swooped up to the right allowing me to see his back and off into trees. It had been a couple of months that no Hawks came but a couple of weeks ago while working in my yard, a Hawk flew over a neighbor’s house, swooped down in my path and up over my house…the whole time screeching. I know Hawks are messengers of being aware…know what is going on and paying attention to things.
I take heed of them. I don’t think you are off your rocker. I talk to animals all the time. Your perception is a good one. Yours is a sensible relatlionship with Animals and animal Spirits. Yes certain animals crossing your path is something I had experienced for years. I think I am numb to some of the encounters because animals are so much a part of my life I miss some of these messages. Next month (September) I am driving to South Dakota. I have been invited to visit a Lakota writer of whom some books I have read..some VERY good books. I feel this trek is one I need to take…I would want to say it is a once in a lifetime chance to do something…but the last time I said that about anything, the once in a lifetime turned in to 7 or 8 years….we shall see.Oh the books I have read are Nature’s Way and Mother Earth Spirituality. I am currently reading Creator’s Code. I would suggest these to everyone.
I have books on Animal Spirit guides, totems and I use Medicine cards and Scared Path Cards. I am always in wonder with the messages I get from the cards…I know there are those who will read this who will think I am nuts..but that is Ok. They are welcome to their own beliefs.
I feel I am on a long journey that started a number of years ago and what I have experienced and experiencing now has many messages. I listen to all of them. Appreciate all and look forward to the next. My only wish is I that I could be on this journey with my late husband. But then I realize he is a part of this journey and is responsible for directing me in where I am going now. Life never ceases to amaze me..and the animals are a big part of it. Thank you for your wonderful post.
In psychic development some people feel they have animal guides. See Animal Speak by Ted Andrews. I refer to the animals I see around people more as totems. Totems to me means that they teach us something. When you read up on the traits and purposes of the animals and then relate it to yourself, you may get a more complete picture of your own journey and its lessons.
I feel an afinity for certain animals and birds are a big part of it. I am an air sign and they relate to my need to fly away at times. (At least that is what I have learned from it).
An interesting story about birds…I was coming out of the house one day and sitting bold as brass on the next door eaves was the most beautiful snowy owl. (a bird I have an affinity for is the owl). Being a city girl I had never seen one so up close in the city. It was a beautiful experience for me.
God bless, J
I am a Leo but lately I have been so very drawn to birds, to watching them fly and soar with such freedom. I should pull out my cards and do a reading. I’m sure there is a message I’m meant to get. I’ll bet it has something to do with not getting bogged down in the details, but, rather, to let my spirit soar.
What a wonderful gift you received from the owl. Having been raised in New York City, I understand what a special experience that was. I’m an almost country girl now (not really rural, more small town) and I now understand why growing up I always hated where I lived. I was always meant to be out here with the rest of creation.
Being a Leo makes sense…you are a feline in astrology both western and Chinese…drawn to cats..My dear late husband was (is) a Leo also. I am a Rat in Chinese astrology (Virgo in western) but the animal attraction of cats and rats makes sense to me. Cats, birds, rats all have something in common..albeit the hunt, it still draws them together.
Thank you for your post. I have had Ted Andrews book Animal Speak for years. I like his attitude toward animals…but I do have one problem..he says in his book he carries a shovel in his trunk to bury the dead ones he finds along the roadside…I think he has missed that those dead animals are food for other animals…he should leave them where they lay. Where I live we have a lot of Turkey Vultures..they feed off of road kill as do other animals..Ted needs to step back and look a bit closer at Natue. I don’t rely on Ted Andrews alone. I have others I read. There are a few really good books by a Lakota man Ed (Wanbli Wasici Eagle Man) McGaa. I recommend these to everyone. They are Nature’s Way, Mother Earth Spirituality and Creator’s Code..very thought provoking reading..for those interested. I also use Sacred Path Cards and Medicine cards. 99% of the time, I pull cards that convey a message that fits perfectly in what is in my life.
I was thinking of animal totems yesterday and came to the conclusion I feel an affinity for all animals…but what FINALLY dawned on me, is I feel a very close relationship to Trees and Rocks. I am an Earth sign….so mayhap my Spirit ‘Animal’ isn’t really an Animal but a Tree or Rock.
Hawks were coming to me for a long time while my late husband was so ill. One was sitting on a power wire in downtown San Francisco as I turned a corner heading out of SF. That was one of the strongest Hawk meeting. The last Hawk I saw was coming down the hill from where my horse is boarded. A Hawk swooped down from the right side of the road…I could see all of the underside of this Hawk. He/she(?) flew in front of my truck…as tho it was leading me in bird flying formation. After a few seconds, this Hawk swooped up to the left side of the road and I could see its entire back and wingspread. I wish I could have captured it on film…but it is planted in my mind. I know Hawks represent being aware. I take those sightings seriously. Each sighting made me look closer at my life and what was going on around me.
Your Owl story is wonderful. I do believe Animals bring messages to us…but then so do meetings with other people. I do not feel there is any kind of accidental meeting of any kind. Everything happens for a reason…unfortunately we don’t always know the why of it all until the time is right….that always reminds me of the movie Michael with John Travolta…
Thank you again and have a great day,
Valerie
I like the reason, season, lifetime inspiration. It answers so many of life’s questions. And, of course, creates a few new ones.
Those we choose to see as a lifetime, it is never enough time to love and be loved. Those we wish would find their out never do.
God bless, J
Each day is like writing a story. Turn the page and start another chapter. I feel my life has become a storybook of sorts…but then all of us have our own storybooks and tales to tell.
My husband was a wonderful man. He will live in my heart forever…I fear there is no one who could ever take his place. I know that sounds so cliche but he was wonderful.
Seasons seem to be changing here already. The changing of each season always brings floods of memories of years and years of life’s experiences both good and bad. The crisp air or the beginning ot warmth when spring and summer approach are like opening a diarie of yesterday.
I must get to work. I leave for South Dakota next Friday and need all of this placed decent looking for my animal babysitter. I did so little while my husband was ill and did nothing after his passing for almost 2 months. gotta catch up on neglected housework.
Thank you for your beautiful post.
