4 Days to “Heaven”

In 4 days I will be going home to “Heaven”—that is my home State of Maine….even though i have been in exile in Michigan for 40 years; Maine is still home, and where my soul resides. There is even a website for those of us in exile….Here i come, lobstah, steamahs, bacon-wrapped scallops, warm, inviting authentic people,  and spectactular  scenery…..the sound of the ocean, the air so fresh and clean, one can “drink” it.

    Hi Alicia,

Where in Maine?  I live in Bathurst New-Brunswick on the north eastern shore, but my home is St-Leonard, New Brunswick, which borders northern Maine.  As a little girl, in the morning, we used to take the schoolbus in front of our house and look across the St-John river and see a few american flags and think that the kids over there were so lucky that they could sleep an extra hour, since it was an hour earlier in Maine.

Whenever I cross the boundary into my home county of Madawaska, (NB of course, not Madawaska Maine), I take a deep breath and it smells like home.  I swear, even if the car windows are shut or it is winter time, I can smell the difference in the air.  It just feels so welcoming.

Have a great trip and a wonderfull stay.  Take in the sights and smells and you know they will stay with you until the next time.

Hi, Anir:  i grew up in Old Town (12 miles from Bangor)……I try to take as much of home back to Michigan with me, but of course, it evaporates…I buy lots of Maine stuff, and food i cannot get in the flatlands…..devil dogs, whoopie pies, Wise potato chips, marshmallow fluff, Needhams, etc., etc……My sister went to school in yarmouth, Nova Scotia.  One thing I love is that when I get to Portland, the sign says “Welcome Home!!!”  Other airports just say…welcome to blah,  blah..My poetry book is called, Sanctuary of the Soul (meaning, Maine) and my first poem is called: Maine Whispers…I dedicated to my 3rd grade teacher who died at age 97; she was an amazing person, and called me a “fairy-child.” So nice to hear from someone near home!

I will drink in the beauty and eat myself sick.  It will be wonderful.  Oh, I have a huge piece of driftwood in my home and a lobstah trap!

      Alicia

Oh I envy you!  Wow, to go home again.  I’ve never been to Maine or the East Coast but have dreams about it.  I feel like I was there in another life somehow.  Maine sounds like a sanctuary to me.  Slower pace.  Neighbors.  Values.  I was born and raised in the burbs of Chicago and have been in Michigan almost 40 years now.  I go back to Illinois to visit friends and it always feels like home still.  However,  I have this vision of being out east.  Enjoy!  And keep us posted.

Hi Alicia. I’ve never been to Maine (would *love* to spend time there), but at least long ago we were in Pennsylvania and driving through the Appalachian Mountains at the very PEAK of the fall colors, on our way to Mountaintop, PA. It was awesome, and I had my first ever fresh, whole lobster. That was just sheer heaven – the look on my face when it was served says it all.

lovemylife – what suburb area of Chicago?  I grew up basically where I am again now. I’m way out in the middle of nowhere, like 80-90 miles SW of Chicago, but it’s possible I’d know the area you grew up in.  I have to say, though, I’d sure rather be able to call Maine my hometown area!

Although I was born and raised on New York City and currently reside in upstate New York, Maine has always been my very favorite vacation place. I adore Portland and have often wished I could see what it is like in the off season. There is something to be said for a slower lifestyle. Maybe I’ll get the chance to do that one day.

I would love to move back home.  My sister moved back after being in Cincinnati for 40 years, and married a classmate; I went to their wedding at the “Inn by the Sea”…..Exquisite……and I couldn’t get enough of the bacon wrapped scollops!!

I love Portland, too….it is called The San Francisco of the East Coast by travel magazines…..I was stationed in San Francisco, also.

Fall is just exquisite in Maine….breathtaking.  Thank you all for writing to me ; gives me the warm fuzzies.  Once I am back in Heaven, I will stay in touch; my sister and her husband go to work, I walk t the little tiny mall (still has a five and ten cent store and little old fashined shops), then to the seafood market for some steamers (clams), walk  back to the house, eat a lot of goodies, take a nap, until they come home………repeat!!  Hugs
