Women on the Move

Some good news for today…TRACK

Letters to the International Herald Tribune Women’s Progress in Egypt Published: July 30, 2010

Regarding the article “In Egypt, burdens but no privileges” (July 14): Women in Egypt have made huge strides economically and socially, and there are numerous success stories of Egyptian women.

While the first female cabinet minister was appointed in 1962, Egypt now boasts three women cabinet ministers: The minister of manpower and immigration, the minister of international cooperation and the minister of state for family and population are all women.

Women in Egypt occupy nearly 25 percent of top management positions and close to 23 percent of public-office positions. Last year, Egypt’s Parliament passed a law that allocates 64 seats in the lower house to women and more than 12 percent of seats in an expanded Parliament following the November elections. By comparison, 17 percent of the U.S. Congress is female. The future for women in Egypt is bright, with female students making up 49 percent of university and higher-education enrollment.
