Uganda recently passed the Anti-homosexual law indicating imprisonment, even death to homosexuals. The western world has threatened to pull out aid from Uganda which accouns for 70% of its national revenue.
Hilary Clinton has been vocal in trying to get Uganda to change its mind. President Obama also expressed his opposition to the anti-homosexual law of Uganda. Known homosexuals’ names, employment and home addresses are being published in Ugandan newspapers as part of the witch hunt.
The criminalization of homosexuality in Uganda has brought support and opposition around the world. Should the U.S. also stop its aid to Uganda? What are your thoughts?

Yes, pull out and let them solve their own problems – without our money — and watch how fast they change their collective minds. Even though I would guess they would shake hands, make promises and continue with their incredibly archaic policies. I am sick and tired of our government giving foreign ‘hand-outs’ instead of taking care of our very serious domestic needs!!!
Sandra — I would venture a guess at zero, zilch, nada. It’s being piped directly to Swiss bank accounts. That’s my opinion based on years of eventual clarity (after years of giving) that this happens. It happens in Mexico – Bolivia – and the list is too long and I can’t remember all of them. I say let’s put a plug in the siphoning of dollars to foreign thieves and skulduggerers!
Maggie, we disagree vehemently on so many things, And agree just as vehementlynon others. God, I love America and Americans.
With you so much on this one!
Keep our money home then on supporting AIDS research!
Maggie, I admire your nationalist sentiments, and that is a very healthy and necessary sentiment that should remain at the core of each citizen, and if big American businesses felt like you, they would not have exported production, and therefore, outsourced American jobs elsewhere, especially to China.
You are correct, that US aid sent to corrupt leaders do end up in Swiss banks. Now, how do we stop the U.S. Government from continually making the error of sending aid to these corrupt government leaders without sacrificing the peoples’ needs, unless, this is not a consideration on your part.
Please bear me out here. When the Philippines was hit by Hurricane Ondoy that caused severe flooding in Metro-Manila, I have learned that Canada directed its relief aid to the Philippine National Red Cross, not the national government under the administration of Arroyo, infamous for graft and corruption. The US, under Prez O, also sent its aid to the US Consul General in the Philippines to directly administer the building of homes for the flood victims, and not to Arroyo. Obviously, there are new initiatives and patterns being employed by the U.S. to deprive corrupt national leaders direct access to foreign aid and ensure victims do get what was intended for them. Such is also a very strong message of displeasure and distrust of the U.S. government to a corrupt national leader and quite frankly, a slap in the face to this corrupt leader, in respect for American taxpayers money and genuine appreciation and valuation for the needs of the victims. I find this move of the U.S. very influential signal in encouraging and strengthening the will of the Filipino people to push for better national administration, and quite frankly, I find this move of the U.S. admirable.
I see that U.S. has taken a new approach, and hopefully, U.S. assistance to victims elsewhere in the world, are guaranteed to benefit from such aid, and the American people are also guaranteed their tax dollars go where they should, the halpless and helpless victims.
Maggie, with your concern over the flow of aid addressed, something every American needs to preserve and protect, would you now approve of US aid to victims off shore? Or, do you still maintain that U.S. funds allocated for such humanitarian actions be scrapped and directed to address domestic problems?
Thinking the best for you.
Hey === you solved the whole bloody problem — giving to the Red Cross — or other such institutions for distribution!!! I really do believe it would cut out a huge chunk of corruption!! I’m all for any initiative that will help and many slaps in the face to let them know we are not the suckers we represent to them. NOT the people — certainly NOT the people — the corrupt leaders. Anything the U.S. does to show a willingness to help – but to ‘not be used’ is being positive and I could support that.
I had a dear friend in England who used to say to me ‘De Vore you are soft as shit’ – mostly because I believed in helping in any way possible to the needs of some. I am still soft as shit in smaller circles. It is important, nay, VITAL for me to keep my world at eye-level and not constantly looking up or down. A matter of preservation.
Could go on all day — and can only say — you are right — we must support new approaches by U.S. to solve — or at least reduce the problem.
And all the best to you.
Yes Maggie, we need to reject bad practices of the past, encourage and applaud novel & creative approaches that are also non violent in shaming and discouraging corrupt leaders in other countries. The leaders of the western world also learn to be creative and have started to adopt new tactics in their aid giving as a result of the pressure from their constituents to stop support of any kind to corrupt leaders of nations receiving aid.
Let’s face it…. Foreign Aid for the most part is done because of political reasons, not humanitarian reasons! Sounds cold? you bet it is but it’s reality. If the US stops aid to Uganda it will be because it will not hurt the US politically. Do I disagree with this policy? Not really! The USA first, what’s good for our country, THAT is the government’s job!!! Do I want to help other people, either as a private citizen or thru organizations? You bet I do.
Ditto!!!
