6,000 Jobs Created Overseas With Stimulus Money…Tell Me It’s Not True Hot Conversation

According to a report on ABC News, about 6,00 jobs have been created overseas using money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  Our government is paying over $1 billion to foreign manufacturers for wind turbines which has resulted in 6,000 new jobs overseas.  In the mean time USA companies that build wind turbines are having lay-offs.

This information came from a report by the Investigative Reporting Workshop at the American University’s School of Communication in Washington, D.C.

Could this be true?  If so what can be done about it, waiting until the next election is not enough.

Yes it is true.   There is a link on the ABC news page about it.

    http://abcnews.go.com/WN/wind-power-equal-job-power/story?id=9759949

From the story, this is one of the reasons why:

Several of the large European turbine manufacturers had limited manufacturing facilities in the United States, but there was nothing in the stimulus plan that required that the turbines, or any other equipment needed for the wind farms, be made here, said Rogers. There are strict “Buy America” provisions in the Recovery Act, but this Green Energy Stimulus initiative turned the existing tax credits into cash grants, bypassing the “Buy America” provision.

Apparently in the future we need to close loopholes by making sure the BUY AMERICAN clause is embedded….which will then incentivize more US manufacturing growth

Thanks for the link.  It seems unbelievable with so many Americans out of work that things like this are still going on.  Why would any elected official look for loopholes to send jobs overseas?  Even if it costs more and takes longer to manufacture in the US, we need the jobs here to help fix our economy.

Correct me if I am wrong, however the American Recover and Reinvestment Act was signed into law Feb. 2009, by our current elected officials.  This was the law that approved the spending of billions of dollars for the purpose of helping our economy.  I am not questioning the money being spent, I am questioning why it is being spent to employ people overseas when there are people out of work here who could do the job.

Your point is actually a valid one on certain levels.  Manufacturing jobs have gone overseas and one of the primary reasons is cost.   Manufacturing has died off in this country to outsourcing because of the influence of unions, who strong armed ridiculously rich compensation & benefits package for workers with just a HS education.  Avoidng the cost, the jobs went overseas because — oh by the way — the product buying Americanpublic didn’;t want to spend the price on the product that came with the American wages on it.

        We do like our bargains.

If you want to bemoan not being able to buy American,  bemoan the union influence….

I am not talking about individuals spending their own money.  I’m referring to the government spending our tax dollars.  I’d rather they spend the money keeping Americans employed and perhaps spend more up front for what’s being purchased (in this case wind turbines).  In the long run it’s costing the American taxpayer more because the more we import, the more unemployment goes up. Higher unemployment means the gov’t. spends more on food stamps, welfare, homeless shelters etc. plus they collect less income tax.

Ultimately we may end up spending more by importing (the wind turbines) then we would have if they were mfg. in this country.

Also, the money I’m referring to  that was spent overseas was made available for the purpose of improving our economy.  This is a great country where you have choices on how to spend your money and what clothing you want to purchase.  Isn’t it wonderful you had the option to have your windows done by Lowes.

I believe in order to remain a great country we have to get our economy back on track and creating jobs is the way to do it.

I agree with you…but people here don’t want do do certain jobs so what do you think this administration should do to make everybody happy ??

I don’t think it is up to the gov’t to make everybody happy. I don’t think the administration should be attempting to keep the cost of yard work or auto repairs down. If you can’t afford to pay someone to do these jobs for you, I guess you should learn to do them yourself.

I do think the gov’t should do what it can to help create jobs so people can feed their kids and keep a roof over their heads.

I believe it is going to be the success of small to medium size business’ that will create new jobs.  Programs like those offered by the U.S. Export Assistance Centers (which is part of the Dept of Commerce) are a step in the right direction.  This gov’t agency helps local companies export their products over seas. They provide market research, assist in finding international distributors and provide guidance on standards and regulations for exporting products made in this country.

The export of items like candles is up over 14%, precious metal jewelry up over 35% and bookbinding up 59%.  This is just a sample of some of the information avail. from this agency.  These increases are for products made in the USA between 2008 and 2009 and exported.  I think it is this kind of help that will create more jobs.
