We tend to forget that it wasn’t all that long ago that many states had laws against interracial marriage. In 1967 my friends had to leave Virginia to marry because she was 1/4 Phillippino & he was 100% white. This apparently made sense to the legislature of the Commonwealth. I remember that the churches were the strongest supporters of the laws, too — they put forth justifications that included the Tower of Babel story, the idea that G-d created the races separate & didn’t want them co-mingled, and (when all else failed), asked us to consider the children. Yes, the poor children who wouldn’t be accepted by either the white OR the other.

If this congress has its way, we may all be back in the 50s in a lot of ways . . . these guys seem to care ONLY about the unborn, not about the women who carry them, not about the recently born, not about children, not about the poor . . . ok, I’ll stop.

I don’t care who someone marries although I do prefer strongly a minimum age of 18. If you aren’t old enough to drink or vote , then you aren’t old enough to choose a life partner. Other than that, it’s not my business who someone chooses as a spouse.

Our country has a lot of really strange ideas going on now.  Most of it is from the ultra-conservatives but you are right, sometimes it is the Democrats too.  Marriage is complicated enough without this kind of stupid law being suggested.    What should be important is whether they are a  good person, do they have a job, do they have the same or similar values and morals-can you live with what is important to them.  THen of course there is CHEMISTRY.

I am the oldest of 5.  I have a sister who’s husband is Mexican American (and they have 3 children) and a sister whose husband is Japanese American (also with 3 children).   A friend of mine called my family the United Nations…LOL….fine with me.  All of these kids are beautiful, really nice kids (well, they range in age from 16 to 35–kids to me:).   Don’t we have enough problems in this world without making decisions about who people can and can’t marry?  KG is right, they are trying to bring us back to the 50′s…and the conservative religions don’t help!

I have two daughters.  I’m with you Track, I don’t care who my daughters marry, as long as they love my daughter and they are a good person.  Race has nothing to do with it!   We as Americans are mostly “Mutts” anyway;).

I may admit to the vague possibility of slight prejudice, but it is also this proud grandmother’s opinion that mixed race children are the most beautiful, intelligent, best behaved, charming, loving, and sweet of all.

TRACK I find 46% astounding, I would assume some would, but not almost half.  It’s distressing.

That is really strange, to me.  Of course, I’ve never been in or lived in Mississippi, so I don’t know anything about the state; maybe they’re a few years behind the times?  I do notice that your article pointed to a couple of things – 68% of the people polled were older people (maybe more set in their Mississippi ways?) and that interracial marriage only became legal in 1967 after the Supreme Court made it that way.

I wonder why they only polled Republicans – or did they just leave off the rest of the poll?   Wait… never mind.  Another article ends with this paragraph: PPP has said they also asked non-Republican voters the interracial marriage question,  and those results will be released sometime in the future. They also asked whether respondents believe the right side won the Civil War.  (Newsy) ♥

Well Track some people never surprise me, why do you think it is easy to take from the poor and downsize their life style as if there is room for any downsizing?

This pass several years many republicans have shown who most of them are and it is not a pretty picture.

Apart from the appallling result of this poll – I am confounded as to why anyone would even be asking this question! Will they be taking polls on appropriate Jewish neighbourhoods, the reintroduction of chastity belts for unmarried women and constructing barbed wire fences to keep inner city residents from escaping?

Aren’t the republicans the ones screaming for liberty???

OK – I’m ducking back out… I never get involved in political discussions – but in this case, it’s not political, it’s um – insanity. (I know, I know, there often isn’t much difference…)

Thank you. It makes me wonder just who is behind this and what kind of game are they playing? Who are they manipulating and why? And you know – long after they are exposed and discredited, folks will remember these results…

This country never did get a complete “blood transfusion“, now in 21 century those who think and live like that want to bring it back again! DNA Our children will not go for it and many have left family for the choice!!! I may be a substitute for somebodies grands, I can do that…Galatians 6:3 “for if a person think themselves to be something, when they are NOTHING, they deceive themselves…” St. Paul, Romans 12:3b-c “…to every person that is among you, NOT TO THINK (OF YOURSELF) MORE HIGHLY THAN YOU OUGHT TO THINK; BUT TO THINK SOBERLY”, St Paul… there is more than one way to be drunk, HUBRIS…TRACK

I maintain that in 50 or less years we will all be a lovely mulatto, coffee colored nation.  And, until then we will have factions and pockets of stupidity and pumped up importance by the ‘politicians’ who create crap so that they can look like they are working for us — when in fact their time seems to be spent creating rules, wars, taxes, that work agin us!!  When we speak of transparency — I almost always see the troublemakers.
