OK Your Opinion Please Hot Conversation

Can you please tell me if you think this cactus plant is dead or alive.  It grows things out of the top on occassion.   It’s on my hot hot east facing balcony and I throw the dregs from coffee cups, pop, water, in it and that is about all.

All other remarks regarding the rest of the picture you can keep to yourself.  It’s my husbands fav. thing.  lol  I need a laugh.

    Hi Nana,

I hate to throw out a plant unless I have to. If you don’t know what type of cactus it is, I would find out the name and then google how to care for it or how to prune it. Cacti are very hearty and can survive the extremes of hot and cold in the desert. Living in SW FL, I’m becoming more a fan of cacti after having more delicate tropical plants die in the dry, hot summer and occasional frost in winter. VERY sustainable. Good Luck!

I noticed that there are many cacti in the yard of our new house.  I had been wondering if the humidity would harm them but they are mixed in with palms and plants I don’t know the name of yet.  They look nice. I also remember palm trees in Arizona when I was growing up.

Duffy:   Your right on both counts.   That is Angelina Jolie and she has resided on our balcony for about 3 years now.   My hubby who would not be caught dead at a lawn sale nearly drove off the road and across somebody’s lawn to score that vintage poster for $1.00.   The one and only thing he has ever ever bought at a lawn sale.

Also, the plant is ugly and I feel guilty all the time because it is so ugly and I don’t even know if it is alive or dead.  It sure is prickly, I don’t even know how to get it out of the pot without damage to myself.  I feel sorry for it in the most pathetic way.    I do however quite like the vintage pot it is in.

I have to say, that maybe you have that ugly plant in front of that poster for a reason…just sayin’…oh, I don’t really think that it’s ugly, it is just unique, and I think if it is sprouting stuff that it must be alive! so it must like the stuff you are throwing at it. That is the extent of my gardening knowledge. I have one lovely Christmas cactus. I put it outside all summer, ignore it, and bring it in around November when it happily blooms…no thanks to me. When I used to keep it inside and pay attention to it it never bloomed…go figure!

Well if you truly want to keep this cactus – put it into a new pot with cactus compound then only water it (with water!) occassionally. Try and get advice from your local gardening center re: type of cactus and nurturing.

I could sell Angie.  put her on craigslist er something.   I’m sure it must be quite a vintage poster although I haven’t given it much thought.

Gee, I was actually thinking that the whole picture itself would be good for a print.  This poor, but upright cacti making a very impressive virile statement against Angie therel.  I don’t mind the photo, wish my breasts looked like that.

NC, why in the world didn’t you just tell us that the picture is an old black & white taken in your 20′s (even tho I’m sure colour was around then!) & wowed us!

Oh yes the plant.  I think it’s alive for the very reason that it’s standing.

HAHAHAHAHAAAAA, sugisme! I had the exact same thought about that tall, erect, virile-looking cactus misbehaving itself – almost right up against Angie’s picture. But I was trying SO hard to behave myself, which is odd, since I rarely ever behave myself. I’m SO glad someone other than me had that thought, LMAO!)

OH. I just noticed your statement was to sugisme and your boob statement would’ve been about Angelina. DARN. Oh well, that’s okay – I already woke myself up this morning by laughing out loud. Really, really hard. :-)

    Nana,

That cactus is alive- probably puts on a new set of leaves once a year- is probably suffering a little in the reflective light of the window, especially if it gets too hot. It can withstand high temps, best early morning light, north side of the house, though. Water once a week.  When healthy, they are really quite unique and can grow to be at least six feet tall.  Sorry, can’t think of the name.

Oh, and will withstand frost if outside, but needs to be covered- a paper bag will do.

oh, thanks for this.  I live in a highrise apartment building and face east side balcony.  but I’m glad to hear that somebody thinks it is alive.  It does grow little leaves out of the top but they just sort of wilt and dry out.  I will re pot it properly and stop feeding it coffee dregs, and pop and maybe stop using it for an ashtray too. :)

I think you should name that thing and stop throwing trash into it’s bed.  You don’t want the cactus police coming round do you???  We have beautiful blooming cactus — purple and yellow and white – growing wild all around us here in the high desert.  I have a yellow one on the edge of my garden.  Would take a picture for you but am technologically challenged – don’t know how.  I would start off with a clean slate — apologize to him/her and promise never to throw trash at him/her ever again — then see what happens.  You won’t want to just sit and watch it — they are very slow movers.  Good Luck.
