My knitted scarf keeps unraveling from the bottom! How do I prevent this from happening?

We’re knitting a “tube” scarf on one of those knitting machines, but the bottom (or beginning of it) is not staying knitted together.  I keep re-reading the instructions and it didn’t mention anything about tying it off in any way, but I think that’s what I need to do.  Just DON’T KNOW HOW!!!! Am I supposed to make a knot when I begin the process?

Help!!! Please!!! My daughter just got this for Christmas and she’s very frustrated and disappointed already, as am I!

There shouldn’t be any need to “tie off” the beginning, or bottom, of the tube, but you do need to tie off the end, or top of the tube.  In fact, if you pull the free end of the yarn at the bottom of the tube, it should pull the tube shut like a drawstring bag—not unravel.  I’ve just taken out my own knitting machine and started a tube to verify this, and I don’t see how it’s possible to unravel the bottom end of the tube at all. Perhaps you’re not threading the machine properly, so that the first row of the tube is not weaving correctly.

Remember that you’re supposed to alternate hooks when threading the first row, before you start cranking.  You should only be threading yarn into every other hook on the first row; when that first ‘circle’ of yarn is complete, the yarn will be pulled into every hook as the machine is cranked.  Hope this helps.
