Elisa’s link doesn’t work but try this one. http://www.localharvest.org/  I started buying local produce as often as I can after watching The Future of Food.  I’m not completely there yet but headed in that direction and this year I put in a small kitchen garden, a couple of tomato plants, peppers, watermelon, basil, etc.  Many of my neighbors have one as well and we have a community garden. My friend Bob taught himself how to garden last year and put in a huge garden then taught himself how to can and make jellies.   The Future of Food scared me and made me mad. There is a special place in hell for Monsanto.

I just realized my link does not work.  It’s a photo of the peppers I grow.  We have had a food garden for the last 45 years.  We plant 100 plants of tomatoes and peppers, string beans. lettuce, swisschard, eggplants, garlic, onions, arugula and the basics – parsley and basil.  We can our tomatoes (last year 200 jars).  It keeps us busy and healthy.

Good for you, I’m very impressed.

My friend Bob is a musician and lives in an urban area. He planted a front yard garden of food that is stunningly beautiful, more beautiful than anything his neighbors have.  When I was growing up we grew almost all our own food, had chickens, goats and always went deer hunting and fishing.  I don’t eat much meat but I could get behind some chickens and goats.

i, too, have in the past few years really worked at buying as much local produce and meat, dairy, etc.  i live in the cowichan valley on vancouver island and we have an abundance of great produce here.  it is worth paying the extra, at least to me it is, for food that you know where it has come from.  there are far too many instances of e-coli, botulism etc. with the foods that are produced in large plants.  also, our farming neighbours need all the support they can get.

today i planted a small 6 x 6 veggie garden, which will hopefully produce some veggies in a couple of months – that is if the rabbits, deer and the dog leave it alone!!

Yet another bill creating  – or trying to create the notion that somebody in the Senate, House or wherever is really truly doing a job.  And, yet again, it’s a ‘job’ on us – the citizen consumer and tax payer.  My only consolation is that we know and they know that there aren’t enough ‘garden police’ to enforce this ridiculous pile of words.

A perfect example of David & Goliath.  If you can’t grow your own garden people, or have no time to can PLEASE support your local farmers at markets.  We’re seeing more & more old fashioned Farmer’s Markets popping up again.

And while us consumers are at it, please shop at the smaller Mom & Pop operations.  China is getting too much of our merchandise work.

I do not like to garden, but like to see pretty gardens and would love to have one, but not do the work.  As i had said on another thread…. i envy those that can spend hours outside working w/dirt.  It is not something that i want to do myself, although tomorrow i will have to stop procrastinating and deal with the yard outside of my patio area.  It is blah, lots of weeds.  I spent over $300.00 last year to put grass squares in.  Then it rained so much the place flooded and the grass rotted.  What luck!  I thought it was shaded but i have been looking outside and there is quite a bit of sun, enough for grass to be able to grow w/o any fuzz.  I bought seeds this time.  Living on the everglades it is acid, salty soil.  Trust that i have some success with the seeds.   I cannot put rocks back there because the place is slightly slanted and the rocks tend to roll when it rains a lot since it floods.  In So Florida we can get 3″ of rain in 2 hours.  It can rain across the street and not here.  Is it weird.  Plus it is soooooooooo hot.

Ladies, i spent all day outside today… I took an energy pill and it worked because i did not even feel the heat.  Tomorrow i have to finish but i complished a lot.  Now, i did put today the weed and feed on the problem area behind my patio.   Then i went to Walmart and found a grass seed that “will grow anywhere” shade, part shade and sun.  It was expensive but i bought it as i need to do something about this area.  I read the instructions it says … rake, fertilize, then spread the seed.  Since i did the weed and feed, can i do the seed thing tomorrow or do i have to wait?  I rather finish this project this weekend.  Want to get it over with.  HELP!

Depends on what kind of weed killer you used. Some weed applications suppress germination. Weed and feed packaging usually tells you how long you have to wait. Grass seed packaging should tell you that also. If not, check the company’s web site. Good luck with your project.
