I agree with Sunblossom: try Google. Not giving us much to go on here.

Florida, south of Orlando, is the only true “tropical” region in the United States. I live here. In a nutshell:

    1. It’s hot.

    2. We have hurricanes.

    3. We don’t have to rake leaves much but we do have to mow and weed a lot more than Up North.

    4. Fleas are a constant battle if you have pets.

    5. The sky and sunsets are the most beautiful I ever have seen, except for Venice, Italy.

    6. It’s bad for hiking, good for bike riding and sailing.

    7. Most people are from somewhere else, so there is a limited sense of history and community.

    8. Your car must be air conditioned.

    9. It’s not for everyone.

    10. In January, you will think you are the luckiest woman on earth.

Living in the Tampa Bay area, I will have to agree with you and add:

I wouldn’t trade it for going back north.

I do disagree somewhat about the limited sense of history. I think it depends on where you live as far as ‘most people are from somewhere else’. Although I’m from somewhere else, the area where I live has an extensive history (which I’m enjoying learning) and many folks are born and bred here.

Hey Olga: I agree. Different parts of our unusual state are very, well, different. I am on the east coast and we do have an extensive history here, too. But I think we also have a bad track record of poorly planned growth and destruction of historic properties so we can build things shiny and new.

And I find many people here identify themselves by what suburb or development they live in, and from where they came up north, which keeps them (IMHO) from fully investing themselves in their cities and larger communities’ futures. Quite a few people from here never call themselves “Floridians,” even if they have lived here for years.

Anyway, nice to connect with you. I like the Tampa Bay area. My aunt and uncle live in St Pete Beach, and I am there often. You guys have THE BEST sunsets!

We love the Gulf beach area too. If you haven’t been, next time you come down go to Ana Maria Island. GREAT old style beach experience. And very inexpensive in the summer.

    South Florida here….

lots of mosquitoes at this time of the year and a lot of frogs.  Every beast must be in the everglades, we have them.  HOT, HOT, HOT, June, July and August and part of September as well.  After that it is around 82 and beautiful.  Affordable housing.

One more thing. When you live in a tropical climate you suddenly become very popular with friends and family during the winter months. lol
