Tattoos Hot Conversation

Is there anyone out there over 50 who has recently had a tattoo?  I am thinking of getting a small ankle tattoo with two hearts in honor of my children.  Am I crazy?  What are the downsides of doing this?

I will not say that you are crazy, but I would encourage you to really think about this.  I do not have any tattoos, but I will say that most business do not want them to show if you have them.  My daughter has several, but they are places on her body that unless you know she has them you would never see them (in saying that they are on her back), but I really wish she had not done this, I hope in time she does not regret her decissions but time will tell.  Why not get a necklace, bracelet, or ring to honor your children.  I guess as much as I think I am very up to date with my thinking when it comes to tattoos my mind goes back to a Great Uncle that I had that was in the Navy in World War II (they were down both arms and all over his chest) they were ugly, faded, and just palin nasty!!!!  I know they say that with the new inks it makes them last longer – only time will tell!!!

Good luck to you whatever you decide, but really think about it!!!

You are not crazy.  I got my 1st tatoo at 48.  I now have 2 and am getting a third,  Mine are  tasteful and in spots that only my husband can see, ie my lower back, my hip.  I have been a good conservative girl my whole life.  It is time to live now and do the things I have always wanted to do before it is to late.  i say go for it.

Hi Sope Gal, I got one in 2002 and not many people know I have it!  I’m 58 and think it’s great.  It’s a small heart with a yellow rose with vine wrapping around.  It’s on my hip and can’t be seen unless I’m nekked!  My son was with me the whole time and the guy who did it was great.  He was the guy who did the tats on the Dixie Chicks (5 flies on their feet).  I never did have any problems with it.  I’ve been thinking about another one but not sure what I want.  You’re not crazy at all.  It took me a few years to actually go thru with it but I’m glad I did!

One downside I can think of is ageing skin.  Would it be ok with you if it didn’t look as good in 10 years (or less)?  I would definitely check with a dermatologist about this issue before going ahead with it.  Also, I wonder why you want to honor your children with something that isn’t readily seen, unless you live in a warm climate and usually go barelegged.  This is just me, but I find jewelry prettier than tattoos.  Is it the permanency that you’re after?  I agree with Momabean; find out all the downsides before you do anything.

I don’t have any tattoos and don’t plan on it.  That’s me.  My husband got some back in our “biker” days and they are amazing.  And on his upper arms so he can hide them.  He has a professional job so it is considered to be in “bad taste” to have one that obvious.  Anyway, that’s what we thought.  I never had the desire.  I see tattoos almost eveyday at work.  What concerns some of the women about their tattoos is how to hide them. Wearing strapless dresses and having tattoos all over can be a concern to some.  We sell a tattoo cover-up kit.  Don’t really know if it works.  Consideration to where it’s put is important.  I’m sure most of these women thought they were safe having it on their shoulders.  Anyway.  I’ve seen some beautiful tattoos almost everywhere on the body.  There was a stigma attached then and is totally different now.  So, you’re not crazy.  Unless you put his name on you. Lol!

I always admire women who have the nerve to actually do what they want rather than what everyone thinks is right.

Getting a tattoo is a personal thing. I work with several women who have them and all of them are very tasteful and pretty and they dont even bother trying to hide them. they are a work of art.

One day i will get the nerve to go and get one myself. I want a tiny fairy on my ankle and just have to build up the nerve to get it. I am told with my boney ankles that it will be painful..hence the hesitation

You’re not crazy.  I’m 51 and got a tattoo 2 years ago when I was visiting Ireland.  It’s a Celtic knot on the inside of my left ankle.  I too had always wanted a tattoo and this one is a reminder to me of the incredible trip I had to Ireland which was a deam vacation I had planned and saved for for years.  So, I’m glad I have it and every time I look at it, it brings back wonderful memories.  I always use lotions and sunscreen and it still looks as good as the day I got it.  Do some homework when it comes to who and where you have it done.

    Good luck with your decision.

I got my first tattoo at 41. I am 50 and I am currently looking for the right design for my ninth. Every one of them have a very special meaning and I thought about it for a long time. Its been 2 1/2 years since my last and I’m itchin” for another. NEVER put a husband or boyfriends name on you!! I have my childrens’ names and the initials of my mom and dad (who have passed). I love my husband dearly and we’ve been together for 35 years through thick and thin, but I still will never put his name on my body. He has no tattoos and is not interested and neither is my older son. My baby however has a few (he’s 23) but has stopped for now. I can’t wait till when I can sit my grandchildren on my droopy knees and tell them the stories behind “Nanny’s pictures”. Their names will be there too. Not at all worried about what anyone thinks, been there done that. Just do your research and make sure the studio is up to all health standards. Good luck, you’ll not regret it!

I got a tat when I was 36.  It’s a teddybear in a heart with my name on it.  It’s located in my inner thigh and hurt LIKE HELL when it was done.  I’m 50 years old now and have all but forgotten that it’s there.  I had originally wanted something on my backside regarding my relationship with my ex  – but he thought it was a BAD idea.  At least he had one good thought in the 12 years that I knew him.

Depending on where you want it and how big and bright it will be – I don’t see what the problem should be.  If you are a professional person be sure to keep it undercover during business hours.  That’s why I had my tat put on my inner thigh.  This way even if I’m wearing a dress a person has to be looking mighty close in order to see it – and NO ONE should be looking that close unless I want them to.  Also, be sure to follow the tattoo artist’s instructions on how to take care of it after you get it – otherwise it could get infected or even heal in a very nasty manner.  I was actually given some bactine by the tattoo parlor to take care of  the tat I got.

    Hello Sope Gal:

I’m 54 (55 on Jan29th) I got my first Tattoo when i was 4o but i had been in and out of tattoo shops since i was 18 always wanted one but just could never find something or hand any idea of what i really wanted. Until i moved from where i was born (Vancouver Island) then i wanted something that reminded me of home. I used to spend countess hours on the ocean and had lots of encounters through my youth with dolfins, the ocean and the dofins were what i missed most when i moved, so i had a small ocean scene with dofins done on my shoulder. (back)

Tattoo’s are a very personal thing and since my first ar 40 i have had a few more done for different reason, but all were very personal and meaning ful to me. When my granson was born, when my father died, well you understand where i’m going with this.  My last tattoo i got just this last summer.

I have never had a downside with having mine. and Ankle tat’s are really very nice. Kind of like having a special piece of jewelry you never take off.

Just make sure you find a GREAT artist, check our there shop look through there albums, each artist has one of there work, have a really good idea of what you want, and get him to work with you on your design then will draw something until your really happy with it. And follow there instruction to the letter when your careing for your new tattoo.

Good luck i hope you do get one, just make sure in your heart you really want it,

    Brenda

I’ve had all mine done in places that there only visable if i want them to be,

I have 6 tatoos.  All on the small size and can be covered for work purposes.  I do not regret any.  My first was during a divorce after 20 years of being told I was not allowed to get one by my husband,  I say its your body, it’s tasteful and if its up lifting DO IT.

I got my tatt at 50+ while I was vacationing in Hawaii – it’s a hibiscus on my foot. A year later, not particularly liking the desgin, I went to a local tatt shop, had it enlarged (it’s about the size of a fifty cent piece now), defined, and color added. I will be 57 in January and if it didn’t “make my husband crazy” I’d get another. I love it – even my most  conservative male buddy likes it! The following is my opinion: choose a local shop (when you see a well done tatt, ask where it was received and who the artist was); areas that have fat are not as painful as, say, the foot (it hurt like a bear – but after a few minutes the endorphins kick in – besides after childbirth women can do anything – lol); you cannot donate blood for one year (I’m a regular donar and this is/was a downside for me); given aging skin, do make it small and someplace that won’t “sag” – your ankle idea seems like a good spot. As to work – if it’s small and tasteful this should not be an issue even in the most conservative workplace. You are not crazy! If a tatt resonates with you, I say go for it.

I am 61 and I got my tatoo when I was 52. It’s small, on my hip, no one sees it but me (and my husband).  It was to commemorate something in my life. I don’t regret it. I’m all for it but I don’t like them when they show. At our age we look like aging biker chicks!!But it did hurt like hell. But, what the heck, Go for it.

I wantd to get one for my 60th (in October) and still may..I think it’s kinda fun – body art and all.  I’m thinking about a small one, like a ring, on my ring finger.  I have been loosing weight and my band keeps slying off! THis way, even if I didn’t put it on, I’d have my sweet ring on my finger :-)

Go ahead! We don’t need ‘permission’ anymore !

No I don’t think your crazy some of your friends might as mine did lol but  they get over it. I got an ankle tattoo at 48 didn’t tell my husband, best friend or kids that I was going to do it. I went for 3 consultations my anklet has  mychildrens & husbands name linked by hearts I helped design it with my tattoo artist. Once the kids did see it they were thrilled and I think my husband secretly enjoys having his name on me. I didn’t find it horribly painfull a lttle tender around the ankle bone . make sure that you go to a reputable shop. I would suggest the lettering not be too small so that eventually they run into gether and are unreadable I have seen people who have put to small a tattoo and after a while they kinda blend..good luck with that !

I think tatoos are cute if they are tasteful.  I am 55 and a couple of years ago I got one on my hip.  It was a Chinese symbol for wife.  My husband loved it and it is discreet so I show it only to those I want to see it.  This summer I was a little braver and got a tribal design on my ankle.  I love that one as well (I’m done now though!)  What you might do is try out a temporary one to see how you like it first.  I look at it as having a permenant little design on yourself.  I don’t have to wear an ankle bracelet.  I have my little design instead!  I think it’s fun.

I am 53 and I got one this summer on my lower leg close to my ankle bone. I was feeling a bit out of control of my health and my relationship and just felt the need to control something. I love it and it makes me feel strong when I look at it. It is very easy to hide if I need to.

No, you are not crazy. I think it is a very nice, very thoughtful idea.  I got my first 2 tattoos at age 49 in January 2009 in Japan in honor of my dear husband who passed away last September.  He was from Japan. My son-in-law is Japanese and has head-to-toe body art all done by one tattoo artist in Japan. Of course, I went to his artist. I have a cherry blossom branch above my left breast (like a permanent corsage) and my name and my husband’s name in Japanese writing on the inside of left forearm- also with the kanji for “everlasting love”.  I had pink roses added to my forearm in August.  Does it hurt?  Yes-alot. And the equipment buzzes like a dentist’s drill, which can really annoy some people.  But I am glad I have my art and I have received many compliments.  Will I get more? Yes. I understand that feet and ankle tattoos really hurt – not much meat there.  I read a really good mystery novel while Mr. Toshi was tattooing the roses in August.  It was a good distraction.  Go For It!

Go for it and don’t look back. I got my first tat just a few months ago at 56 and it’s not a little thing. It going from my toes, half way up my leg. It’s beautiful and when I started it in August and was wearing capris, I got so many compliments. I had asked many peope whos tat’s I liked and finally found the artist for me. His work is amazig, very detailed and bright. He and I designed it. The design is the words “to thy own self be true” in beautiful script with 3 main flowers (each one of my kids picked their own flower and color), a hummingbird and othe smaller flowers surrounding. It’s definately a work of art and I’m very proud of it. I feel so liberated and love it more each day.

Join the crowd! I always wanted a tatoo. But in the 70s the scare was hepatitis. In the 80s aids. Then I became a mother and that was who I was – not Larnette. When the kids left home I finally began to be me again. I was determined that I would have one before I was 50 and I did. First was a small butterfly – new life. Second was a bookworm. Third a cross with my husband’s and children’s names inside. Fourth was Kokopelli. And I am planning on a fifth. I believe know one else can tell you to get one or not. I believe that if it is something that you want, then, it is you who decides!

I was 56 when i had small pawprints tattooed on my ankle in honor of a Boston Puppy.  My 80 year old mother was horrified and told me that when skin sags that tattoo’s look like a mess.  Without missing a beat her sister, my beloved Aunt Shirl said,” Oh Bette I don’t think ankles sag”.

Aunt Shirl was right. I researched this on the internet before getting mine at the age of 60 (near my ankle). The legs and shoulders are the last to age in women. Don’t know why but I’m glad because when most people get a tat they get addicted. I’m getting my second one on the 21st and will make an appointment for my 3rd then because my tattoo artist is booked for at least 3 months ahead. If it’s any consolation, most relatives are mortified when we get tats at an older age. The only ones in my family that appreciated mine are my kids and they love it! Your Mom will get over it and it sounds to me like Aunt Shirl is “Cool” with it already. May you love it always and don’t hesitate to get another if the urge strikes!

Hi Sope Gal! This is my first post here on VN. I just wanted to tell you that I have had a great experience with getting a tattoo for my 50th birthday. But let me for worn you, you may get addicted! LOL! I have never been a big tattoo fan. My husband and I were supposed to get one together about 5 years ago and I chickened out, but he got his with my name emblazzoned across his arm. So, he has always said “so when are you going to get YOURS?” Then my younger son got his first one at 19 and 3 more since then. I observed how thoughtful he was about choosing his art and his artist. So, I have had a couple of years of kinda, oh, finding my path of clarity, and decided I wanted to celebrate that and being 50, cause baby, I am not going down the path of “your supposed to act like your age’ pppfftt. Anyway, back to the story. I started looking at lots and lots of tattoos. Lots and lots of artist, went to a tattoo convention (which was a great eye opener for me), spent a year thinking about it. Unlike some of the other posters here, I wanted something I COULD SEE and enjoy. So, I have always worn ankle bracelets, hit me, duh, that would be the art. Then I proceeded to choose charms that I would like to hang from the anklet. I chose my childrens, husband and my birthstones. A music note, a heart with my husbands initials, a joy charm and a LOA charm. Found a tattoo artist (I wanted a woman) that I felt I could have a great experience with. When I found Amy, Sacred Rose Tattoo in Berkeley CA, her bio said she was interested in tattooing people who she attracted into her life and had meaning. She is also a Reiki Master.(another story) I set up an appointment with her for a consultation. Checked out the shop, looked at reviews of the shop and Amy. Took in pieces of examples of jewels and vintage jewelry (an obsession of mine) and communicated clearly what I wanted. She took it and within 10 minutes was drawing my vision! Another plus in going to her was that she has her own private room, no one watching….  The next week I went in for my 3 hour appointment and it was sooooo wonderful. I describe it as a freeing moment for me. I was doing this for ME and NO ONE else. This is my body and I was adding art that represented so much of my beautiful life. Did it hurt! uh YAAAAA! But, it was sort of like, once I got past the initial pain, and I relaxed and Amy and I just talked and talked about some wonderful things, it was like childbirth, yes it hurts, but you get something really wonderful in the end. The top of the foot is one of the most painful spots, as you have lots of nerve endings there, but now I look at it and adore it. The joy charm is right on the top of my foot, so it reminds me to take every step in JOY. And everybody can see it. I have had more people stop me and tell me that it is so beautiful. Well, that’s my story, and I have more of those, for another day. I have added another larger piece to my upper back, another vintage jewelry piece, representing my 30th wedding anniversary. Sooooo, have fun with it! Make it a special event. I see NO down sides to my choice. So if it is YOUR CHOICE, there is no down side….let me know it you do it…
